  • Prysmian scoops award for supporting local students
    help local students gain important new skills as it won the Developing People Award in Eastleigh College s training ambassador awards Prysmian was picked out by the college s senior management team from more than 100 submissions made on behalf of local businesses offering apprenticeships by students at the college The submission was made by Nicola Bartholomew a student at Eastleigh College who has been working in the Company s Trade and Installers telesales team under the guidance of Laura Mitchell who heads the department The awards ceremony took place on March 7th during National Apprenticeship Week and saw Prysmian described as an employer which goes beyond the call of duty to promote and invest in learning and development Paul Atkinson the firm s UK chief executive said This is an outstanding and proud achievement for our company The fact people believe in us to go that extra step is just very motivating I am touched that Nicola went that extra step and nominated us to be recognised in the very important area of apprenticeships It is something we all very much believe in here at Prysmian Afumex News Build the Future Read More View All Afumex Updates Sundstrom Report

    Southampton factory was the first significant investment in an overseas facility that had been made by this important Italian organisation The Ambassador was keen to urge the UK to continue to play a major role in Europe and warned against any retrenchment behind national borders In his speech Prysmian CEO Paul Atkinson reflected on the history of the company and also referred to the ground breaking projects with which it is currently involved the installation of fibre optic broadband cable to every house in Jersey the Western Link power transmission project the increasing involvement in renewable energy Mr Atkinson also outlined the level of investment in UK manufacturing You need be in no doubt of Prysmian s commitment to UK manufacturing Last year alone we invested 15 million in our UK facilities including a 2m project to develop a state of the art testing laboratory for high voltage power transmission cable here at our Bishopstoke plant opened by the Prime Minister last February As our competitors have opted to move their manufacture overseas or to withdraw from the market completely so we continued to invest here assuring our customers of a reliable supply of high standard product delivered from local factories The centenary year will see each of Prysmian s four UK manufacturing sites holding open days for all staff as well as a series of customer focussed events A particular emphasis this year will be placed on education and recruitment The objective is to encourage students of all ages including schoolchildren to understand what manufacturing is about and to appreciate that engineering and technology based industry offers a rewarding career path We have inherited an impressive legacy of innovation technical excellence and above all enthusiasm If we are to maintain our position within our market and within the communities

    The ACI investigate and publicise the findings of cables found to be faulty counterfeit or non compliant with British European or International Standards According to the ACI 20 of the cable in the UK supply chain is unsafe non approved or counterfeit resulting in 27 of all electrical fires across England attributed to faultywires and cables over 4000 a year 1200 non fatal major accidents over the last 5 years 15 deaths from faulty electric wires over the last 5 years Recommendations Installing unsafe or counterfeit cables is not only irresponsible and dangerous but can result in substantial costs to replace and could result in investigations by the Health and Safety Executive HSE and criminal proceedings To be sure you don t fall into the trap of using unsafe non approved and counterfeit cable follow these simple recommendations Never install unmarked cables check markings on cable and NOT JUST on packaging Ensure there is full traceability on cables and products specified and purchased and keep records Insist on independent third party accredited and approved product AS A MINIMUM If you are unsure of any cable product the ACI will check and test these free of charge Always buy cables from
