  • Sharma urges local businesses to contribute to business rates review
parliament uk The Treasury has published a discussion paper which is seeking contributions from the public on issues of fairness and making business rates sustainable both to help businesses plan for the future and give local authorities certainty about future revenues to pay for public services The key questions from the discussion paper on which the Government is seeking input from the public are 1 What in your view does this evidence suggest about the fairness and sustainability of business rates as a tax based on property values 2 What evidence is there in favour of the government considering a move away from a property based business tax towards alternative tax bases What are the potential drawbacks of such a move 3 If business rates remain a property tax how do you suggest business rates could take into account the individual circumstances of businesses such as their size or ability to pay rates 4 What evidence and data can you provide to inform the government s assessment of the trends in use and occupation of non domestic property 5 Is there evidence to suggest that changing patterns in property usage are affecting some sectors more than others 6 What examples from other jurisdictions and tax systems should the government consider as part of this review What do you think are the main lessons for the business rates system in England 7 How can government use business rates to improve the incentive for local authorities to drive local growth 8 What impact will increased local retention of business rate revenue have on business growth What will the impacts be on local authorities 9 What other local incentives should the government consider to further incentivise business growth 10 Should business rates be reformed to make them more closely reflective of wider economic

  • Sharma welcomes commitment to protect those on the minimum wage
Wage so that the lowest paid workers do not pay more tax as a result of increases in their wages Alok first called for the pegging of the Personal Allowance to increases in the Minimum Wage during a Parliamentary debate on the Budget in 2013 The Conservative manifesto published yesterday committed the Party to increasing the Income Tax Personal Allowance to 12 500 meaning those people who work 30 hours a week on the increased minimum wage will no longer pay any income tax at all A Conservative government would also introduce a Tax Free Minimum Wage law so that the Personal Allowance automatically rises in line with the National Minimum Wage rather than inflation meaning the Personal Allowance will increase more quickly Alok Sharma said It is excellent news that the next Conservative government will introduce a permanent tax cut for those working for the National Minimum Wage Under Labour those who worked hard found more and more of their earnings taken away in tax punishing those who did the right thing This new law will put fairness back into the heart of our tax system Alok Sharma MP Reading West The Reading West constituency embraces parts of two

  • Sharma welcomes First Great Western response to honour GroupSave tickets sold to Reading FC fans
you for the call As discussed I have spoken to our commercial team GroupSave is a national product not a FGW one and is designed to help fill empty seats on trains at quiet times To avoid encouraging people to travel on already busy services these fares are not normally available on busy services and specifically not on dates when there are major events for example the Reading Festival and sporting fixtures This is why they are not available for the Reading Arsenal game However I fully agree that we did not inform our customers early enough and we should not have allowed tickets to be purchased This has caused confusion and while we will not be issuing any further GroupSave we will honour any GroupSave tickets already sold We will make sure this is tweeted out that local media are updated and that it is on our website I would also be grateful if you could pass this on to anyone contacting you Best wishes Mark Alok Sharma said It is welcome news that the fans who have already purchased their GroupSave tickets will have their tickets honoured but clearly First Great Western s communication with fans has been
