  • Alok Sharma welcomes Government cash to fix church roof in Theale | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
    Church in Theale will receive 85 200 in cash from a government scheme set up to help restore listed religious buildings in urgent need of repair Alok wrote to all the churches mosques temples gurdwaras and synagogues in Reading West to inform them about the new 15 million fund after it was launched by the Chancellor at the Autumn Statement on 3 December 2014 The funding will mean that Holy Trinity Church which is a Grade 1 Listed building modelled on Salisbury Cathedral and was once sketched by the painter John Constable in 1832 can restore its roof and upgrade the integrity of its drain water pipes Over the last three years Holy Trinity s regular congregation has grown by 40 and the church has sought to play a larger role in the community The church is used at least twice weekly by the local church primary school with has 280 pupils and in 2014 all 1 100 pupils of Theale Green school attended the church for Remembrance Day The church played a major role in the Jubilee Celebrations in 2012 and then in the visit of the Olympic Torch In September 2014 the church featured prominently in the local commemorative events of World War 1 including the Rededication of its War Memorial by the Bishop of Reading in a church service attended by well over 200 people from all sections of the community and a commemorative concert with the Phoenix choir With funding for the roof repairs now secure the church will be able to meet the needs not only of its expanding congregation of all ages but also hopes to expand its role in the community and open the church for even more community use Alok Sharma said I am absolutely delighted that Holy Trinity Church has been

    from driving without insurance in a vehicle taken without consent was more than two and a half times over the alcohol blood limit had taken cocaine in the previous 24 hours and was driving at 70 miles per hour in a 30 zone whilst being pursued by police John and Kris s killer received just 10 years and three months in prison for his crimes Alok is now working with Kris and Jon s fiancée s Tracey Fidler and Hayley Lindsay to toughen up sentencing for those convicted of death by dangerous driving Alok will join Tracey Fidler in Parliament today for the launch of the Criminal Driving Manifesto which includes a series of pledges backed by a cross party group of MPs to toughen up the law on criminal drivers The content of the Criminal Driving Manifesto was drafted as a result of the discussions that took place at a parliamentary summit held on 1 December 2014 which was attended by families who had lost loved ones as a result of criminal driving together with organisations and charities Brake RoadPeace Institute of Advanced Motorists cycling charity CTC and a cross party group of parliamentarians Tracey and Hayley both attended the summit with Alok Sharma On 6th May 2014 Secretary of State for Justice Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP announced a full review of penalties for driving offences The review is expected to be completed by spring 2015 with the timing of publication of the review s findings and recommendations yet to be confirmed Last month Tracey and Hayley met with Prime Minister David Cameron during which the Prime Minister promised to write to the Justice Secretary to feed Tracey and Hayley s views into the review In the Prime Minister s letter he wrote Last week I met Alok Sharma MP Chris Skidmore MP and the families of John Morland and Kris Jarvis and Ross and Clare Simons to discuss the changes to the law that they want to see on causing death by dangerous driving The families spoke powerfully about the horrific loss that they suffered and their strong views that the sentencing framework in place had not delivered justice in their cases Whilst noting that we are reviewing this issue so could not make specific commitments now I agreed that the following issues should be considered in depth as part of the review we are carrying out on sentencing for driving related offences The maximum sentence length available for causing death by dangerous driving currently a 14 year sentence Whether offenders convicted of causing death by dangerous driving should be denied automatic early release from prison at the half way point in the sentence The question of whether sentences should be awarded concurrently or consecutively in cases where a number of people are killed as a result of dangerous driving whilst recognising that the courts normally determine this issue The discounts provided for late guilty pleas in these types of cases The length of the driving ban
