    Letters Gallery Contact Links Alok Sharma welcomes Government efforts to increase trade with the Commonwealth Alok Sharma welcomes Government efforts to increase trade with Commonwealth countries and calls for discussions to be held with Commonwealth countries alongside any renegotiation of our relationship with the EU Alok Sharma Reading West Con My hon Friend is a great champion of the Commonwealth and those from the Commonwealth who reside in the UK He talks about the Commonwealth s great past and future Does he agree that the Government have done a lot to foster trade links with other Commonwealth countries We have seen our bilateral trade with India grow significantly What more does he think this Government or future Governments can do to ensure that that trade increases significantly over the next decade Andrew Rosindell My hon Friend is completely correct that this Government have done more than any other in my memory to make the Commonwealth more significant and to develop trade and co operation with it but we can go only so far because as he will know as a nation we can sign up to trade deals with countries only via the EU again the EU is a block to us utilising our Commonwealth network for trade and co operation Hansard Alok Sharma Does my hon Friend then feel that if we are going to renegotiate our relationship with the EU we should have similar discussions in parallel with some Commonwealth countries particularly on trade to see what sort of relationship we can come up with and what the British people prefer Andrew Rosindell My hon Friend makes an excellent point As a vice chairman of the Conservative party he does good work with Commonwealth countries and I commend his enthusiasm We need to decide for ourselves as a

    Pincents Hill Development Number 33 Bus Route Number 33 Bus Route Survey Save the Bath Road Reservoir Campaign Southcote rat infestation The Reading Futures Fair Underwood Road Precinct Development Visitor Parking Permits Letters Gallery Contact Links Sharma welcomes good progress on superfast broadband provision 9th February 2015 Alok Sharma the Member of Parliament for Reading West has welcomed the news that 91 per cent of homes in Reading West are now able to access superfast broadband services 41 377 homes in Reading West are now connected to a cabinet that can provide download speeds of at least 24Mb second According to Ofcom the average download speed available in Reading West is now 29 1Mb second As part of the Government s Superfast Broadband Programme a further 2 654 homes in Reading West will have access to superfast broadband by 2017 taking the number of homes covered to 97 these premises are all in areas that the private sector would not otherwise have reached The Government s Superfast Broadband Programme has now reached over 2 million homes and businesses and coverage is being extended to a further 40 000 premises across the UK every week The Government is investing 680 million in superfast broadband and has cut red tape to allow new broadband street cabinets and other infrastructure to be installed without the need for prior approval from the local council except in Sites of Special Scientific Interest Alok Sharma said Superfast broadband is key to boosting economic growth making the town more competitive and creating jobs I am delighted that thanks to plans by the Conservatives in government 97 of homes and businesses in my Reading West constituency will have access to download speeds of at least 24 Megabits per second by 2017 Alok continued Investing in superfast broadband services

    Broadband an Internet Service Provider promising speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second in Reading Alok met with Hyperoptic s Managing Director Dana Pressman Tobak to discuss the company s expansion plans Hyperoptic has chosen Reading as one of the three hypercities outside of London to receive the fibre to the home broadband service at new commercial and residential developments The three locations which also include Bristol and Cardiff were selected based on a number of factors including consumer demand and overall density of population Alok has been campaigning for faster broadband speeds across Reading and earlier this month at the request of one of his constituents wrote to all homes in Tidmarsh urging them to register their interest in faster internet speeds on the Superfast Berkshire website http www superfastberkshire org uk Alok also raised the issue of broadband speeds with the former Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport during a visit to Reading in April last year Superfast Berkshire is a campaign being supported by Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership and all of Berkshire s unitary authorities to improve broadband speed and coverage across Berkshire in the areas that are not commercially viable to the private sector Alok Sharma said Securing faster broadband for residents and businesses across Reading is one of my top priorities as an MP and will be key to unlocking future local economic growth The fact that Hyperoptic Broadband has selected Reading as one of the first hypercities in which to roll out its Gigabit broadband service is a mark of confidence in the town and I hope that this kind of service will start to become the norm in the near future Dana Tobak Managing Director and co founder of Hyperoptic commented I was delighted to meet with Alok

    for job creation Having already invested 700 000 in Abbey s move to new premises and creating 5 new jobs Andrew cited frustrating examples of a video upload to their new website taking over 3 hours before crashing and rationing staff access to the Internet Mr Young explained to Maria Miller that he had contacted all of the neighbouring businesses to register interest with BT in receiving superfast broadband and BT had previously given a commitment to install superfast broadband by October 2012 but that he had received no updates from BT since that date passed The Secretary of State promised to write to BT to ask about their plans for the rollout of superfast broadband and to ask how they planned to update customers that had registered an interest in receiving superfast broadband The Coalition Government has pledged to secure superfast broadband in 90 per cent of premises and to provide universal access to standard broadband with a speed of at least 2Mbps by 2015 Alok Sharma said I was very pleased that the Secretary of State was able to take the time to visit Reading and to hear about the challenges that some businesses are facing in respect of broadband speeds and I am very pleased that the Department has agreed to follow this up with BT Maria Miller Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport said We know how important access to broadband is to local communities so we are investing 1 2 billion over the course of this parliament to deliver a transformation in broadband by 2015 but there is always more we can do Given how important connectivity is to businesses and enterprise it was extremely helpful to hear more about Andrew s experiences at Abbey Windows and I look forward to hearing from
