  • West Reading schools careers “Futures Fair” gathers pace | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
    local secondary school pupils from Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School Denefield School John Madejski Academy Little Heath School Reading Girls School and Theale Green Community School Around 50 organisations have already committed to take part in the Reading Futures Fair including both small and large companies higher and further education establishments those involved with organising and offering apprenticeships as well as local business organisations In order to make the event as interactive as possible various organisations participating in the Futures Fair will be running practical advice sessions in smaller breakout rooms Thames Water will offer advice on CV writing and interview skills Credit Action will be running a seminar on financial awareness Versa and Thames Valley Regional Network will be providing information about apprenticeships and Reading UK CIC will be talking about the local Reading and Thames Valley economy Alok said I have been really impressed by the enthusiasm of local schools and businesses wanting to participate in the Futures Fair This is a great opportunity to showcase the best of not only local businesses but also local young people I expect more organisations will sign up over the coming weeks to take part and I really want to turn this into a flagship local careers event for our young people in Reading going forward Kelly Odell Futures Fair Project Manager at Central Berkshire Education Business Partnership said There has been an overwhelming response from local employers who want to showcase their industry and the career paths they can offer to the young people of Reading Amongst the employers already confirmed for this event we have commitment from Barclays Ernst Young First Great Western Investec Network Rail PepsiCo Tesco and Thales who all want to help young people find out more about their future careers options A number of local businesses which are participating have explained their motivation to get involved with the Futures Fair Liz Noble of Ernst Young said Speaking to us could be the start of a journey full of remarkable people places new ideas and rewards A great career in other words Of course this might feel like miles away but the truth is people who get the right knowledge and experience under their belts faster get into great careers John Redbond of Castle Vets in Reading said At Castle Vets we are committed to making our contribution to the Reading community and providing qualified veterinary staff to help educate young people on their options regarding a veterinary career is certainly one way we are helping to do this Lance Corporal Dennis of The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers REME said We are taking part in the event to promote and advertise the excellent career opportunities within the REME Technology is constantly changing and the Corps requires intelligent young soldiers who have the academic qualifications to learn the trades and the determination to complete basic training Denise York of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said Being a fire fighter is a much more varied job

  • West Reading schools careers "Futures Fair" launched | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
    have extensive experience in working with local schools and organising careers fairs and have helped to deliver the hugely successful Teentech Fair which is now held every year at the Madejski Stadium The Reading Futures Fair will have 60 to 70 organisations exhibiting at the event including both small and large companies higher and further education establishments those involved with organising and offering apprenticeships as well as local business organisations The event will be tailored so that it is relevant for years 8 and 9 students as well as year 11 and 6th form students The aim is to make the event as interactive as possible and sessions on interview techniques CV writing financial budgeting and talks about the local Reading and Thames Valley economy will also take place in smaller breakout rooms so that students have a good opportunity to get the most out of the event At the end of the school day the Futures Fair will remain open so that students can return with their parents for a further discussion about jobs and careers with the organisations present Alok said I am really pleased to have got this initiative off the ground and I want to thank all our sponsors for responding so enthusiastically and being so keen to support this Futures Fair CBEBP and I have already had meetings with local secondary schools to discuss the event and we will spend the coming weeks and months working with the schools to ensure that we have a careers fair which really delivers for our young people I hope we can use this year s Futures Fair to build towards a flagship annual Futures Fair event in Reading Beverley Graves joint managing director of CBEBP added Businesses have an important role to play in informing and supporting young people with decisions about their future careers We look forward to working with employees from a range of local national and international companies many of whom recently attended our local schools Their efforts will enable Reading students to be ready to work in an increasing competitive job market Mark Hopwood managing director at First Great Western commented First Great Western is delighted to be associated with such an important and prestigious project As a major employer in the area with a wide range of different opportunities for school leavers and graduates we welcome the chance to be involved It is great to see so many local businesses joining together with local Member of Parliament Alok Sharma to offer an event that will be of great benefit to young people in Reading and the surrounding area David Wilson of Network Rail said Network Rail is at the start of a project to transform Reading s railway and we want to use our presence in the town to inspire a generation of railway engineers for the 21st century It takes all kinds skills to run a railway from high tech signalling design and civil engineering to station management and customer service This

    Growth Seminar Battle Health Petition Boosting primary school places in Reading Delivery of Purley Bund Flood alleviation for Keswick Close and Ogmore Close Flood alleviation for Kingsley Close in Whitley NatWest Branch Closure in Pangbourne No to Pincents Hill Development Number 33 Bus Route Number 33 Bus Route Survey Save the Bath Road Reservoir Campaign Southcote rat infestation The Reading Futures Fair Underwood Road Precinct Development Visitor Parking Permits Letters Gallery Contact Links Early Christmas present for Underwood Road campaigners Local MP Alok Sharma joined constituents at the Eastern Area Planning meeting on 15th December which rejected Bellway Homes s planning application to build 74 homes on the Underwood Road site in Calcot Alok commented This is a victory for common sense and I applaud the planning committee at West Berkshire Council for giving an early Christmas present to all local residents by rejecting this application The local residents campaign group who have worked so hard to present the case on behalf of the local community deserve special thanks I objected to this planning application on the grounds that the planned development would be completely out of keeping with the surrounding area and too dominant at up to 4 storeys high and dense and this has clearly been recognised by the planning committee Alok added Reference was made by members of the planning committee to emerging national planning policy under the Coalition Government and this is going to be absolutely key Localism is at the heart of the Government s agenda and the Localism Bill which has started its passage through Parliament has the underlying principle of delivering a radical shift in power from the central state to citizens and local communities The Bill will radically reform the planning system to give local people new rights to shape the development
