  • Alok Sharma raises torture case in Parliament

  • Brookfields School visit

  • Late Payments Debate
    considered to be higher than in many other European nations according to the latest European payment index and it is clearly not an acceptable way of carrying on In the past few days colleagues will have seen the outcome of the Tesco discussions To be fair Tesco contacted me before this debate and told me Smaller suppliers with spend from us under 100 000 a year will move to 14 day payment terms That is a win for the adjudicator for small businesses and ultimately for Tesco and British business in addressing the culture of large companies in doing business with small suppliers During the debate Alok asked the Small Business Minister to consider a number of proposals suggested by the Federation of Small Businesses The Government should make it mandatory for companies with Government contracts to be a signatory to the Prompt Payment Code Amending the UK s implementation of an EU directive on late payments to ensure that 60 days is considered the mandatory maximum period for paying suppliers To broaden the scope and remit of the Small Business Commissioner which will be introduced as part of the Government s Enterprise Bill to also consider complaints about poor payment practices in the public sector and have the power to make referrals to the Competition and Markets Authority Alok made the point that since there are more than 5 million small businesses it would not be practical for a Small Business Commissioner to mechanically process all complaints and therefore suggested instead that the Commissioner should establish a public register or website loosely based on those that review holiday destinations on which SMEs could enter verified complaints about late payments or poor supplier policies practiced by their customers Once SMEs start coming forward with issues many of which will be

  • Apprenticeships
    England The new figures also show progress towards the Government s commitment to deliver 3 million more apprenticeships by 2020 with 268 000 already started in this parliament The Government offers grants of 1 500 for businesses of up to 1 000 employees to take on new 16 to 24 year old apprentices if they have not taken one on in the last year From April 2016 employers will not have to pay National Insurance Contributions for apprenticeships under 25 Alok Sharma said These figures are fantastic news particularly when combined with the news last week that the number of young people out of work in Reading West is at a new record low This means more young people earning and learning getting the skills they need for a successful and secure future Alok continued Apprenticeships have been a core part of the Government s plan to deliver a more secure future for young people which is why we committed to deliver 3 million more high quality apprenticeships by 2020 with these figures confirming we are already making progress towards that goal Photo Alok Sharma with apprentices at Cisco Tuesday January 26 2016 Alok Sharma MP Reading West The Reading

    to India Alok took part in the 8th UK India Economic and Financial Dialogue held yesterday in Downing Street led by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and Finance Minister of India Arun Jaitley during which Alok s new role was formally announced The Joint Statement by Chancellor Osborne and Minister Jaitley issued after the Dialogue noted the beginning of a strategic partnership between India and the UK on matters related to infrastructure In respect of Alok s new role the Joint Statement noted Both sides welcomed the recent appointment of Alok Sharma MP as the British Prime Minister s Infrastructure Envoy to act as the key contact between our two governments Indian public and private sector infrastructure companies and British financial practitioners Alok who spent 20 years advising companies internationally on corporate finance matters before entering Parliament in 2010 was closely involved in discussions between the UK and Indian governments on plans to launch a flagship rupee denominated bond in London by the Indian Railway Finance Corporation which was a key announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the UK November 2015 Alok was also a part of the UK government team involved in planning for Prime Minister Modi s UK visit Following his appointment Alok said I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed by the Prime Minister as his Infrastructure Envoy to India this is an incredibly exciting role Prime Minister Modi s announcement on the Indian railway bond was a strong endorsement of the UK s position as a leading international financial sector and gained considerable attention amongst the Indian and British business communities Alok continued The Indian government has a hugely ambitious programme of infrastructure projects and I look forward to working closely with colleagues in both governments to ensure that
