  • Street party raises awareness of Bath Road Reservoir Campaign | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
Gallery Contact Links Street party raises awareness of Bath Road Reservoir Campaign The street party in Western Road which backs onto the Bath Road reservoir site held on Saturday 5 September was hailed a great success by local residents and all those campaigning against Thames Water s development plans Alok Sharma the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West who attended the party and was asked to judged the fancy dress competition commented There was a great community spirit at the party and everyone really enjoyed themselves but behind the fun was the very serious objective of raising awareness of our collective opposition to Thames Water s plans to build 96 homes and commercial space on this beautiful green site Alok continued I have been very disappointed that neither Thames Water nor Reading Borough Council have been willing to listen to local residents wishes to extend the deadline for submission of objections beyond 14 September and there seems to be an undue haste to rush through a decision on these plans I just hope that the Council will see sense and reject Thames Water s application which is the outcome local residents want Bath Road reservoir campaigner Mel Woodward said Around 200 people came along to the party during the afternoon and evening and we had lots of fun activities for young and old including apple bobbing a fancy dress competition fire juggling and party games We certainly managed to raise awareness further in the local community about the need to object formally to Thames Water s application and the Bath Road Reservoir Campaign Group with assistance from Alok Sharma and his team have distributed standard letters of objection to over 3 000 homes in the area We would urge all local residents to complete and return these letters of objection

  • Save Bath Road Reservoir group meets Thames Water Chief Executive | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
nature reserve which could be used as an educational resource for local schools to study Reading s heritage and urban wildlife Alok continued Thames Water said that this is not an option and that their objective is to maximise value from the site We are obviously very disappointed by this attitude of putting profit above people However Thames Water still have an opportunity to not just talk the talk about being an organisation concerned about sustainability and the environment but walk the walk by saving this green haven from development Alok concluded The campaign group members and I pressed Mr Owens very hard and explained that Thames Water have not really listened to the views of local people so far and in any new planning proposal we want to see a much lower density of housing the retention of embankments around the site to retain the privacy currently enjoyed by local residents and a community facility along the lines of an educational resource centre which would give something back to the local residents Reservoir campaign group member Mel Woodward said David Owens said at the meeting that he had listened to our views and Thames Water would consider them very seriously We will find out in a matter of weeks when their new application is due to be submitted to Reading Borough Council just how much Thames Water have really listened to the ideas we put forward As a bare minimum we expect Thames Water to follow the guidelines set out in the Council s 1996 planning brief for this site These guidelines include the retention of the embankments buildings of no higher than 2 storeys and also recommended a maximum of 80 homes on the site In reality with all the development which has taken place around this area

  • Shadow Minister meets Bath Road Reservouir Campaign Group | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
with campaign group members and a walkabout along the perimeter of the reservoir site Justine said I was very pleased to have a detailed discussion about this potential development with Alok Sharma local residents and the Bath Road reservoir campaign group who have clearly all been working very hard on behalf of all local people to oppose any development on this site I think it is really important that going forward local people are allowed to have a real say on where they want to see new homes built and it is vital to ensure that any new development really is sustainable Justine continued We want to see a planning system which reflects the views of local communities and not one which overrides them from Whitehall That is why a future Conservative Government will abolish the top down housing targets that are driving housing development whatever the cost to communities and their local environment Justine concluded Meeting the Bath Road reservoir campaign shows why these top down targets have been so unsuccessful and I will be taking up the issues regarding potential developments which have been raised today by residents with the Conservative team formulating planning policy Alok Sharma said It was very good to have Justine Greening visit the reservoir site and she heard loud and clear that what local people want is to have a real say about what happens in their communities There is a growing frustration that we have lost control over our own areas to targets imposed by unelected quangos and addressing this frustration is one of the real challenges facing any future government Alok added I will be meeting the Chief Executive of Thames Water on 30 June together with some members of the Bath Road reservoir group when we will discuss the views

  • "Save the Bath Road Reservoir" group public meeting set for Wednesday 13th May | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
to update local residents on events to date discuss the implications of Thames Water s proposals and explain how residents can voice their opposition to Thames Water s plans if they do not want to see any development on the reservoir site Speakers at the meeting will include members of the Save the Bath Road Reservoir Group the Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Reading West local Minster ward councillors and other interested parties There will also be a questions and answers session to allow local residents the opportunity for local residents to raise their views and concerns The Reservoir Group has leafleted many local homes informing them about the 13 May meeting and warmly invites anyone interested to attend the meeting Mel Woodward from the Reservoir Group said It is really important that as many local residents as possible attend our public meeting on 13 May and take part in the consultation process We won a significant first round against Thames Water last year when they withdrew their earlier planning application but we will need a real effort from the whole community to see off their latest plans please come out and support our meeting Alok Sharma the Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Reading West added The Reservoir Group deserves our thanks for all their time and effort on behalf of local people to save this unique site from development It does seem though that Thames Water s new plans will not be fundamentally different from those previously submitted and they clearly have not taken into account the views of the local community I hope therefore that Thames Water s latest so called consultation will be just that and not another pointless PR exercise I would urge as many people as possible to turn up to the public meeting and take part
