  • Apprenticeships
starts in England by young people aged under 19 the greatest number in modern history That is an increase of 12 8 in a year and of 32 6 in two years The whole House will acknowledge that achievement We are feeding social mobility and nourishing social justice Alok Sharma I thank the Minister for his huge personal commitment to making the Government s apprenticeships policy a success my constituency had more than 900 apprenticeship starts last year What is his Department doing to make eligible businesses aware that up to 40 000 incentive payments of 1 500 each are available to employers if they take on young apprentices as part of the youth contract Mr Hayes With the modesty for which my hon Friend is known he understated his own involvement in national apprenticeship week when I understand he shadowed an apprentice working in a pre school He is right that we need to get more small and medium sized enterprises involved and to that end I am delighted that the Prime Minister announced during national apprenticeship week the extra support that we are providing Every small business that takes on a young apprentice will get 1 500 something

  • MP backs benefits cap
than households in work Alok Sharma Reading West Con Tonight the House will have a historic vote on whether households on benefits should be able to receive more than households in work Does the Prime Minister agree with me that the introduction of a benefits cap should have the support of the whole House The Prime Minister My hon Friend is entirely right The cap is right and the cap is fair It is right to say that you should not get more than 26 000 a year in benefits that is 500 a week and it is fair because we are introducing a new principle into our welfare system an able bodied family who can work should not get more in benefits than the average family gets from work The leader of the Labour party has said that he is not against a cap in principle tonight we will find out whether he is in favour of a cap in practice Hansard Alok Sharma MP Reading West The Reading West constituency embraces parts of two local unitary authorities Reading Borough and West Berkshire Reading Battle Kentwood Minster Norcot Southcote Tilehurst and Whitley West Berkshire Birch Copse Calcot Pangbourne Purley

  • MP backs Bill but raises concerns that local authorities could raise business rates
local government to encourage growth He calls on the Government to ensure that local authorities can not raise business rates on already struggling businesses Alok Sharma Reading West Con I welcome these reforms which will incentivise local authorities and local government to encourage growth but will the Secretary of State confirm that they will not allow some local authorities to raise business rates on already struggling businesses Mr Pickles I am happy to confirm that fact to my hon Friend because he raises an important point about local businesses needing a degree of certainty Of course the Secretary of State the person holding my position will set the multiplier and the sum There is something strange about all the objections some of which we have heard already in that they betray a lack of faith in the people whom we represent No one area has a monopoly on the formula for growth Economic success is not a southern phenomenon Hansard Alok Sharma MP Reading West The Reading West constituency embraces parts of two local unitary authorities Reading Borough and West Berkshire Reading Battle Kentwood Minster Norcot Southcote Tilehurst and Whitley West Berkshire Birch Copse Calcot Pangbourne Purley Theale and Westwood
