  • Sharma hosts Zimbabwe human rights discussion in Parliament
Robert Mugabe Speaking as a former Foreign Office Minister with responsibility for Africa the Right Honourable Mark Simmonds MP highlighted the aims of British foreign policy of improving trade relations with African states to encourage democratic reform Mr Simmonds said the UK government had a very strong commitment to the people of Zimbabwe demonstrated by the Department for International Development s large aid programme in Zimbabwe and that it had a policy of incremental engagement with the Zimbabwe government but acknowledged the 2013 elections had not been free and fair He said a parliamentary debate would be a good vehicle for bringing public attention to Zimbabwe There was a question and answer session that allowed the meeting participants to question the Parliamentarians and give their own views on how the UK Government should interact with the Zimbabwean regime There were questions on the role of the UK in providing aid to the Zimbabwean people and government policy on immigration applications Alok Sharma said I was very pleased to host this discussion at the request of my Zimbabwean friends in Reading The 2013 election in Zimbabwe is widely acknowledged to have been rigged and the UK Government has expressed serious concerns about voting irregularities The issue of human rights in Zimbabwe has not been debated in the House of Commons for a number of years and so I think a full debate is well overdue The Right Honourable Mark Simmonds MP said I am grateful to Alok Sharma MP who I know is a dedicated constituency Member of Parliament for putting this meeting together giving us the opportunity to discuss these important issues It was an informative and interesting discussion and was an excellent opportunity for representatives of the Zimbabwean diaspora to show their commitment to improve the lives of all
