  • Rail Minister agrees to meeting with First Great Western on overcrowding | Alok Sharma MP - Member of Parliament for Reading West
    with Rail Minister Claire Perry MP to discuss rail overcrowding and secured her agreement to hold a meeting together with Mark Hopwood Managing Director of First Great Western Earlier this month Alok launched an online petition which called on First Great Western to declassify First Class carriages during periods of overcrowding which hundreds of people have already signed Alok Sharma said I am grateful to Claire Perry for the discussions we have had on the issue of overcrowding and I will be raising the concerns of many of my commuting constituents in the joint meeting with First Great Western that not enough is being done to alleviate overcrowding in Standard Class during the busiest times The option to declassify individual First Class carriages is available to First Great Western during periods of overcrowding but I have never personally seen this happen on any service I have used in the past ten years Alok continued I appreciate that more Standard Class carriages are due to become available next year but I will be seeking a commitment from First Great Western in this meeting that in the meantime they will declassify individual First Class carriages on busy trains more often to ease overcrowding in Standard Class and publish on a monthly basis the trains on which declassification took place Rail Minister Claire Perry said The services on the Great Western mainline are some of the most crowded on the network That s why 13 million is being invested creating 3 000 more standard class seats a day for customers across the network This will also mean nearly 16 more standard class accommodation on services into London in the busy morning peak These are solutions to improve services for passengers on these busy trains However I do understand the concerns that Alok has

    to be abolished for businesses which employ an apprentice under 25 Extension of the Bank of England s Funding for Lending Scheme which has been re focused entirely to ensure that banks are providing affordable loans to small businesses Doubling of Small Business Rate Relief extended an extra year Extension of the 2 cap on business rates increases Businesses in Reading have welcomed in particular the announcement that there will be a full review of business rates Speaking during a Parliamentary debate on Small Business Saturday on Thursday 4 December Alok Sharma said One of the great bugbears for many small businesses has been the business rate structure the small businesses that I have talked to in the past 24 hours really welcomed the Chancellor s proposed review of business rates During the debate Alok described the help that the government provides to businesses as relentless through tax and rate reductions as well as specific schemes to help small businesses He urged those celebrating Small Business Saturday to use the event as an opportunity to inform people of those schemes and of the support that is available to businesses to help them to prosper and grow Alok Sharma said 99 of businesses in the UK are small businesses and they collectively employ more than 15 million people which make them a vital asset to our national economy and local economies in towns like Reading Small Business Saturday provides an excellent opportunity to promote our local small businesses and we have some of the best butchers green grocers bakers cafes florists cobblers pet shops cheese shops wine makers dry cleaners hairdressers beauticians newsagents general stores and many others across my Reading West constituency which are the real life blood of our local economy Alok continued The businesses that I have spoken

  • Alok Sharma welcomes Chancellor’s Autumn Statement for families, homebuyers and businesses
    In total fuel duty will have been frozen for nearly four and a half years the longest freeze for over 20 years The cost of family holidays will also be cut with the abolition of Air Passenger Duty for those under 12 next year and for those under 16 in 2016 This will save a two child family travelling from Gatwick or Heathrow Airports 26 on the cost of economy short haul flights and 142 on the cost of economy long haul flights Measures to help homebuyers The Chancellor announced that he would reform Stamp Duty so that house buyers no longer pay a slab tax on the entire cost of the home but rather a slice system which works like income tax so you only pay the higher rate on the part of the property that falls within that band The reforms mean that 98 of home buyers will pay less tax Measures to help businesses National Insurance Contributions for employers who employ an apprentice under 25 will be abolished to help young people get the skills they need to get on in life The 1 000 discount on business rates for shops and cafes on the high street will increase to 1 500 Research and Development tax credits for SMEs will increase to 230 The Bank of England s Funding for Lending Scheme will be extended a further year and reformed to focus on SME businesses Alok Sharma said This was an Autumn Statement focused on delivering a long term economic plan to boost infrastructure grow businesses and help families and home buyers Thanks to the government s policies the Office for Budget Responsibility has revised its projections upwards for economic growth for this year and next year Labour s budget deficit has been cut in half but

    in Pangbourne No to Pincents Hill Development Number 33 Bus Route Number 33 Bus Route Survey Save the Bath Road Reservoir Campaign Southcote rat infestation The Reading Futures Fair Underwood Road Precinct Development Visitor Parking Permits Letters Gallery Contact Links Sharma backs crossing petition for school on Dee Road Alok Sharma the Member of Parliament for Reading West is backing a petition to install a Zebra Crossing outside the gates of English Martyrs Catholic School The petition was launched by local parent Emma Simpson Holland after she experienced a number of near misses with her children outside the school Parents are concerned that many cars ignore the 20mph speed limit outside the school and that action needs to be taken before an accident happens The petition is also supported by Canon Michael Dennehy Vicar General and Moderator of Curia of Portsmouth Diocese and the Parish Priest for the Parish of The English Martyrs The wording of the petition which already has more than 500 signatures reads We call for safety measures such as a zebra crossing to be put in place outside English Martyrs Catholic School in Dee Road Reading Alok Sharma said I recognise the concern that many parents at English Martyrs Catholic School have about the speed of traffic passing through Dee Road I think that installing a Zebra Crossing would be a sensible measure and I hope that Reading Borough Council will listen to parents concerns The parents are determined as am I to make this crossing safe for our local children Emma Simpson Holland said I have been taking my children to this school for many years now and on too many occasions my children and I have had very near misses crossing the road directly outside the school gates and I know other families have

    and Ogmore Close Flood alleviation for Kingsley Close in Whitley NatWest Branch Closure in Pangbourne No to Pincents Hill Development Number 33 Bus Route Number 33 Bus Route Survey Save the Bath Road Reservoir Campaign Southcote rat infestation The Reading Futures Fair Underwood Road Precinct Development Visitor Parking Permits Letters Gallery Contact Links Sharma opens Berkshire MS Therapy Centre Christmas Fayre Alok Sharma the Member of Parliament for Reading West on Saturday 22nd November 2014 was invited to officially open the Berkshire Multiple Sclerosis MS Therapy Centre Christmas Fayre Attendees at the Fayre were able to visit Father Christmas purchase seasonal gifts and enjoy homemade cakes a tombola and a raffle The event was organised by members of the centre who suffer with MS to help raise money to be put towards the cost of providing physiotherapy at the centre Alok has opened the Christmas fayre previously in 2011 and 2012 The event this year managed to raise 1 513 07 The Berkshire MS Therapy Centre was established to provide a range of therapy treatments guidance and support to encourage self help to enable improved disease symptom management and to promote an enhanced quality of life for people with MS their families and carers The centre is housed in a modern building which was specifically designed to provide several facilities including a relaxing area a gymnasium meeting and therapy rooms and an oxygen chamber The independent local charity was established in the 1980s by a group of people all suffering from MS who wanted to provide support to the local MS community by way of therapies Alok Sharma said I was delighted to return to the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre for my first Christmas Fayre of the season The Therapy Centre is always an extremely welcoming place to visit and
