time to write and record the album often writing about experiences in his own life to give the album a big personal feel musically it s a pop album but with a big electronic twist which often comes across gloomy as Grimshaw sings about moments in his life The album opens with Hold On and within seconds Grimshaw is coming at you in a confident way with strong lyrics of Time stops nothing is moving lines cross we have been abusing hold on to your stars before they fade as the song progresses to the chorus bigger and better things come as Grimshaw hits his peak with a set of big and bold vocals the overall sound and feel of the song is like Moby mixed with Massive Attack with a slick sounding singer in tack Is This Love reached number 35 in the UK singles chart back in June when it was originally released the song should of easily got into the top 10 of the chart as it is fantastic with mad disco beats coming at you at such an intense pace as Grimshaw let s rip with a diverse set of vocals which chop and change through the different beats of the song UK rapper Smiler joins Grimshaw for What We Gonna Be an song which features a massive mixture of rap dance and pop to some people it may feel like to many styles of music are being mixed together but surprisingly it works ever so well with Smiler and Grimshaw complimenting each other with their chalk and cheese vocals The majority of the album is full of Grimshaw s own tracks but he does find space to put a cover of a Sia song called Breathe Me and he covers it so well with his

it sticks very much to the classic template laid down many moons ago and nurtured by bands like AC DC Van Halen Thin Lizzy and Def Leppard They don t sing about politics or social injustices as Joel is keen to point out choosing rather to sing about having a good time no matter what So it s no surprise to find that this new album simply follows on where their debut left off If it ain t broke and all that Jagged riff rich verses and hammering singalong choruses characterise the album with tracks like No Way But The Hard Way and Raise The Flag giving us a faceful of that hard livin hard drinkin hard rockin spirit the latter will inevitably become a live favourite with it s infectious chorus Blonde Bad And Beautiful and Armed And Dangerous I had one too many pills now I m high on sextasy send the cheese o meter off the charts but then that s part of the appeal isn t it The album has been recorded live and straight to analogue so it retains about as much of the feel of a live show as you re going to get It s purely no frills with the band going to great lengths not to get too comfortable whilst they laid it down word is they slept in the studio so they could start recording as soon as they got up Ain t no way but the hard way recalls Ryan O Keefe It s certainly got bite Bottom Of The Well for instance utilises space to turn down the pace and give Joel the opportunity to really show off his throaty red raw vocal to the full Then Steel Town inspired apparently by the rabid working class crowds that they

fantastic single to sit nicely alongside their previous singles ATX and Taking Control Old Man Chicago is vocally a massive song as Petter Ericson Stakee puts everything into his vocal duties and the result is breathtaking the song sounds like a country rock song that is big upbeat and extremely listenable it s what I have come to love from Alberta Cross and at the moment they can t do anything wrong Overall Alberta Cross have a sound that fits a wide variety of music genres and a wide range of music lovers will enjoy their sound and the good thing about Alberta Cross is they have that stadium rock sound which helps them support massive bands such as Oasis and Dave Mathews Band at massive arenas and they go off out and do their own headline show s at the toilet sized venues across the country now that is a good position to be in where you can play at both ends of the spectrum however it won t be long before Alberta Cross move out of the toilet sized venues and into the Academy sized venues for their own headline shows 5 5 Review by Trigger Band Members

shows supporting the Brit pop wonders that were Oasis they also released ATX a few months back which happens to be the first single to be taking from their debut album and they are now releasing the second single Taking control on the 23rd November which is just after their current short headline tour finishes Yet again I still can t find a bad thing to say about Alberta Cross as Taking Control is a fantastic single and the best song that they have released so far it is so catchy and features some killer backing vocals of Woooooo oooooh yeah it doesn t sound that exciting in words but trust me when you hear it you will be excited the dual guitar riffs are super charged and so much better than what any indie band have to offer these days infact Taking Control is the best indie song I have heard in a long time seriously with song s as good as Alberta Cross are creating these days you just know they are going to have an healthy career and you can easily bet your house that they will be playing stadium shows again in the near future and

the press release says Well on this rare occasion with Alberta Cross this is true they sound totally different from anything around at the moment Alberta Cross will be new to most people but they are just two song writers Petter Ericson Stakee and Terry Wolfers and the band are made up of Petter s brother John Alexander Ericson on the organ and Seb Sternberg on drums The Thief And The Heartbreaker is the bands self produced debut ep with a collection of 7 heart broke tales that all sound as interesting as each other The ep starts off with the title track The Thief And The Heartbreaker which sets the sound for the whole ep with its mid paced summery melody everything seems to fit together so well with its mellow bluesy feel and vocals that just shines especially on the chorus Lucy Rider is another great soft rocking track where Petter Ericson Stakee s vocals really do shine Hard Breaks picks up the pace with its mixture of running piano catchy guitars sing a long vocals and a really catchy vibe all together Low Man is the shortest track on the ep running at just under three minutes in length and has a real low paced blues feel about it and seems to end too soon Every song on the ep sounds different but as good as the last song but its the finishing track The Devil s All You Ever Had that really does sound different with its lightly played riffs and gospel singers backing up Petter Ericson Stakee s stunning vocals Overall Alberta Cross are not going to become the next big band just like that but with their debut release The Thief And The Heartbreaker the band are certainly on the right steps to success

And The Heartbreaker EP back in 2007 the song has that classic Alberta Cross feel mixed with a bit of the classic Kings Of Leon sound the guitar riffs and rumbling bass lines on their own are pretty damn exciting but front man Peter Ericson Stakee s high pitched vocals are really what make s ATX sound as good as it is the song is really explosive and it about

t bad it trailed far behind Captain Morgan s Revenge The thing with the debut album was that the novelty alone was enough to ensure its success but not only that Over the Sea s to this day I think is the most pirate esque song in existence which gave it the authenticity as well the follow up though I feel that they just strung together whatever resembled the pirate cliché and some of the lyrics were pure and simply cringe worthy This new release though really brings the high octane metal like never before as opener Back Through Time shows opening up with some dialogue and then fast paced technical skill leading off into some chunky riffs Shipwrecked follows on with the same thick metal style but with a very catchy chorus line That seems to be the general consensus for this album its heavier catchier and more upbeat than Black Sails at Midnight Sunk n Norweigion as well always brings a smile to my face with the chorus line One more drink at the Sunk n Norwegian One more drink before we have to die and Midget Saw which is absolutely hilarious This album I think is the perfect utilisation of the comical novelty and actual technical skill Scraping the Barrel as well address people like me who assumed they would be a one hit wonder Many have told us that we can t go on that one day we ll run out of lyrics for songs but when the time comes to write album four we ll scrape out the barrel once more which in all fairness is fair play to them I have complete faith after hearing this album though that they will indeed keep finding themes and lyrics for songs for years to come and

the album fast and furious with so much energy and angry screamo vocals and from this moment you instantly know you re in for a good album This Could Be Anywhere in the World is another stunning song which sounds oddly similar to Killswitch Engage in places and shows more of the bands metal side Mailbox Arson starts off with some heavy drumming and then jumps straight into the screamo vocals the band are known for My favourite song on the album is Boiled Frogs which has a mixture of different singing which fits in so well and gives the band a whole new sound a sound I really like The album also has a few odd moments such as the intro to You Burn First which has a really eerie sound with mellow whiney singing over the top of it the song itself is mellow but scary sounding The rest of the album is just as good as the start of the album as every song is good in its own way Once the album is finished it leaves you wanting more and you find yourself listening to the album again and again The band has changed their sound
