and let me introduce you to this ancient and absorbing craft You ll be amazed at how quickly you can catch on and start producing your own unique yarns p s Update on the remodelled skirt very soon I promise Tags knitting shawl spinning Posted in Spinning 2 Comments Developing Friday March 29th 2013 It s a busy time at work for me I ve got lost of nuno workshops going on where I do have examples to show people but every time I think of another way of doing things I ending up creating more samples Yes that s great but it also takes a little time and as I started them all at once I haven t finished them yet to show them off However I thought I d share a story with you of the drop spindle spinning kit I ve been developing for Adelaide Walker Yvonne knew a man who could make some spindles for us and we thought we d have a go at making up a kit for beginners I rashly volunteered to write up instructions with the help of Hubby after all I only have the two hands who else was going to take the action shots Faced with a blank sheet my mind went blank too and I did a quick search for instructions on the internet to see how to approach it It seemed far more complicated than explaining how to make felt I wanted to ensure there was sufficient information for people to understand what they were doing but not so much waffle that it was difficult to read I drafted out a quick plan of what were the essentials I needed to say and where I might need photo illustrations Hubby has never spun and so was the perfect person to ask to read the instructions and check them through He was brilliant he read it through and questioned lots of places especially as he had no photos to help him at this point Of course you probably realised where this was going didn t you Yep after checking them through I asked the poor man to have a go with a drop spindle My own first drop spindle experience wasn t a pleasant one you could say the air turned blue and I got rather grumpy and fed up of picking the dratted thing up off the floor I was taught to have a go whilst standing and I now think sitting would have been quite handy Hubby was brilliant and irritating in equal measures let me explain He has publicly stated that he has no desire or intention ever to spin and yet for me he was ready yet again to go the extra mile and give it a whorl see what I did there whirl whorl The irritating part was that he wasn t half bad and did actually manage to spin some wool without major loss of temper putting my first attempts to shame More

  • weaving « a life of fibre – Angela Barrow
the end Tags school water st weaving Posted in General 1 Comment All woven up Thursday December 23rd 2010 I started this piece of weaving quite a while ago and finished it a little while ago It has a number of stitches is that the right word which give texture and I like it in the restricted colour palette The weaving doesn t actually take that long but for a beginner like me weaving all the ends in seems to take ages I m sure as I get more practised I could weave more in as I go I really like this scrubby piece of branch that it hangs on The interesting piece of organic matter comes courtesy of a friend and was actually taken from some pot pourri Tags weaving Posted in General No Comments First Weaving Thursday November 11th 2010 I d always been put off weaving by the thought of having to warp up a loom The whole thing just seemed so time consuming yet despite these niggles I have done a little with children and found myself being drawn to it over and over again I mentioned this curious desire to my friend Yvonne who just happens to be an accomplished weaver amongst many other things Now Yvonne knows me well and knows that I don t do straight lines I may have mentioned this before But then to my delight Yvonne informed me there was a way of getting wavy lines into weaving and a good place to start was card weaving I confess I d never heard of this before but it s exactly as it sounds You warp up the card which has serrated edges and weave on that It s very portable and means I ve been able to have a go at weaving whilst sitting with the rest of the family I think I m quite pleased with it but there are so many mistakes In my initial enthusiasm I persuaded Yvonne to run a workshop for myself and two friends who re interested in knowing more and we ll be doing just that tomorrow I finished my sample a couple of weeks ago but didn t get around to weaving in the ends of yarn until last night and that s when my spirits took a tumble As I worked on finishing it I realised more and more how imperfect it was and wondered what I was doing After a good nights sleep I m in a better frame of mind can appreciate it as a sample and am now actually quite looking forward to tomorrow Tags card weaving handmade sample weaving Posted in General 1 Comment Mixed media workshop Sunday May 23rd 2010 A great day with some fabulous work produced We incorporated rag rugging weaving crochet and knitting into the felt for added texture and some low relief The youngest participant was just thirteen but she was also one of the most productive participants A really interesting workshop

My Daughter bought these drawers for her bedroom they looked a little sad and the worse for wear until she painted them up changed the handles and finished the drawer fronts with a range of wallpapers We discussed topping it off with a seat to make a comfy reading corner in her bedroom The foam has been waiting a long time to be used but yesterday was the day It s not perfect but I m quite pleased with how it turned out and it s very comfy to sit on as it has a 2 thick foam pad in there The greatest satisfaction is being able to remove it from the to do list Tags upholstery Posted in General 1 Comment Twiddle mitts December 28th 2015 Also sometimes called twiddle muffs I don t know where the idea originated but they re in use around the country by the NHS and nursing homes People with alzheimers often have restless hands and like things to twiddle with The muffs are knitted crocheted cylinders with lots of interesting textures and bits to twiddle with Very easy to knit or crochet Working with either a chunky yarn or two double knit yarns together cast on 40 stitches and knit crochet until your work is 24 inches long You can see in the picture above that I crocheted this one and included some popcorn stitches and some holes for exploring fingers Where I changed colour I ve left the ends as a short fringe and I ve included some dangling felt balls Buttons of different sizes and textures plus ribbon Crocheted flowers and felt leaves Plastic loops wooden beads and even a bit of surface embroidery Once these are on you can pull one end of the cylinder inside and then stitch the ends closed You ll have a 12 long muff with bits and bobs on both inside and outside Of course it s reversible and I made sure everything I put on is washable too Lots of visual interest lots of textural interest and it keeps hands warm In fact I m sure I know a few folks without alzheimers who d enjoy having warm hands My first two mitts have gone to relatives of family and friends who suffer from this cruel disease future ones will be gifted to my local hospital but I think I may offer them to a local nuring home too Whay not have a go there is loads of inspiration on the internet and it s great for stash busting A quick look at images on Bing has already got me planning more Tags twiddle mitt Posted in General 1 Comment Made with love December 26th 2015 I saw this scarf made up in The Skep Knitting and Quilting Shop and was smitten It s a very simple but effective pattern Chevron pattern which is enhanced by the beautiful self striping yarn It was brought home as part of the giveaway that I won thanks
