    of the Aerodynamics Centre has been secured for the next seven years following the announcement of the UK Aerospace Technology Institute ATI Aerodynamics is one of the four pillars of the ATI along with structures propulsion and systems and it s formation will ensure that research in aerospace will continue to be a major area of investment in the UK Reviewing an apprentice log book in the design and manufacturing department The first phase of the Aerodynamics Centre project at ARA was concluded by the visit on 25 April 2014 of The Right Honourable Michael Fallon MP Minister for Business in the Department for Business Innovation and Skills which provides the funding for the ATI programme along with Industry Mr Fallon was shown the research done at ARA which aims to improve fuel economy and reduce aircraft noise He said ARA are right on the cutting edge of helping us develop cleaner and quieter aircraft Your air ticket is cheaper because of the work that s done here Your air ride is calmer and less turbulent and if you live next to an airport over recent years these aircraft have got quieter and quieter The visit culminated with an announcement from the Minister for 2m additional funding to further enhance ARA s research and testing capabilities ARA led four Research and Technology programmes which provide new test capabilities in the Transonic Wind Tunnel originating from the Aerodynamic Centre covering the following topics Loads alleviation gust rig Hybrid Laminar Flow Control testing Landing gear cavity rig Advanced propulsion systems ARA was also a beneficiary of funding for facility upgrades in the Experimental Aerodynamics Design and Manufacture and Computational Aerodynamics departments helping to maintain its position as one of the world s leading providers of aerodynamic research facilities The last 12 months has seen a phased upgrade to the Transonic Wind Tunnel facility culminating in the installation of a new DC drive motor in February this year the installation of five new machines in the workshop and acquisition of increased high performance computing capacity for the Computational Aerodynamics department In the next six months ARA will acquire new test measurement equipment and additional computing power in the Computational Aerodynamics department ARA has completed the initial wind tunnel tests of the three new test capabilities which have been developed over the last eighteen months Although there will be further development for some of the capabilities these programmes have already delivered new optical measurement systems such as Particle Image Velocimetry PIV and dynamic and fast response Pressure Sensitive Paint Highly Instrumented Civil undercarriage model undertaking testing in the Transonic Wind Tunnel This new facility is aimed at understanding and improving knowledge of air flow around cavities to reduce the noise from future aircraft By measuring the loads on the doors and undercarriage more accurate design assumptions can be made which potentially can reduce the weight of future aircraft Hybrid Laminar Flow Control HLFC Wind Tunnel test using Temperature Sensitive Paint TSP This experiment is

    Wind Tunnel Written by Mary In December 2013 ARA successfully completed tests of a cavity rig in the Transonic Wind Tunnel TWT During these tests Particle Image Velocimetry PIV was used to capture the three dimensional velocity field in the wake of the landing gear These tests were the first to be tested as part of the development of new capabilities funded by the UK Aerodynamics Centre http www ukaerodynamics co uk now part of the UK Aerospace Technology Institute and funded by the Department for Business Innovation Skills BIS In December 2013 ARA successfully completed tests of a cavThis project entitled Cavity Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics is focussed on the manufacture of a large civil nose landing gear model with cavity and the testing of this model in ARA s Transonic Wind Tunnel One of the novel parts of the project is the procurement of equipment for flowfield diagnostics and the use of this equipment in two wind tunnel tests ity rig in the Transonic Wind Tunnel TWT During these tests Particle Image Velocimetry PIV was used to capture the three dimensional velocity field in the wake of the landing gear These tests were the first to be tested as part of the development of new capabilities funded by the UK Aerodynamics Centre http www ukaerodynamics co uk now part of the UK Aerospace Technology Institute and funded by the Department for Business Innovation Skills BIS During these tests ARA used for the first time a 3 D stereoscopic PIV system in the TWT This technique uses two scientific CMOS cameras to image small particles which circulate the wind tunnel circuit and flow over the wind tunnel model The particles are illuminated by a laser light sheet implying velocities can be calculated by processing multiple images at different times Although
