deep breaths and try to relax Don t mumble If there is no microphone please speak loudly and clearly so that those at the back can also hear A witty speech needs to be given in a tongue in cheek manner with a light hearted and cheerful voice Unless you are the next Jack Dee It won t seem anywhere near as funny if your voice is flat and dull When you stand up you may receive a round of applause so either your flies are open or more likely they have given you a warm welcome Hold your head high take a quick look around the room and give everybody a big smile Even if you are not this makes people think you are relaxed therefore relaxing them Don t mention anything about being nervous your speech will seem so much more professional if you don t plug this point Unless it s at a funeral I always try to open every speech with a witty remark or two Once you have got a laugh you will feel much more confident and be on a roll Try and take the speech nice and easy unless you are Lee Evans jokes especially won t go down as well if you are speaking too fast After you have made a joke it s important for you to listen out for laughter and then to let it die down before carrying on It is difficult to predict responses to jokes and the ones which you hoped would bring the house down might only generate a mild reaction yet others which were not that funny to you might inexplicably go down a storm If a joke doesn t work do not be despondent or consider cutting any of your material just pass on to the next part of the speech If you are going to read your speech from the page this is where being very familiar with it really comes in Hold your script up in the air and look over the top as many times as you can and if possible try to look at the people you are addressing or speaking about If your hands are shaking rest your speech on a flat surface or lectern if one is available Keep your thumb where you are which makes it easy to pick up where you are again when you look back at the paper When making a toast make your announcement very positive Ladies and Gentlemen Wait until everybody has stood up then lift your glass positively into the air and wait until everybody has lifted their glasses before saying the words A follow up line to a toast should be given immediately after the people have made their response The main thing to remember is a wedding is a loving occasion people will have had a nice meal and probably a few drinks and you will have the warmest and friendliest environment possible to make your speech I promise
