    special schools including a school for children with a physical disability in Rochdale Over the years I have gained specialist skills in the area of augmentative and alternative communication AAC and working predominantly with children aged 0 19 with a wide variety of individual needs In 2009 I joined the ACE Centre North which is a specialist centre for assistive technology AAC and been part of the assessment and training team there working alongside occupational therapists other speech and language therapists specialist teachers and technicians At ACE I gained extended experience of working with children and also adults with both learning difficulties and acquired neurological conditions such as strokes and MND I have completed post graduate courses in a variety of areas including communication and dysphagia and hold an advanced dysphagia qualification accredited from MMU I am trained in a variety of assessment and implementation strategies including Signalong PECS SCERTS and LAMP I worked within the NHS for 17 years and was the lead therapist in the area of complex needs AAC and dysphagia In 2015 I decided to expand my Independent work and am now a fully independent clinician Much of my independent work now focuses on providing specialist

    environment Through this work I have gained experience of a wide range of assistive technology including low and high tech augmentative communication systems access systems including eye gaze mouse alternatives and switch access I am experienced therefore in developing an individual s skills to give access to the technology required to enable the individual to communicate learn and enjoy leisure activities as independently as possible Working within an interdisciplinary team has always been an important aspect of developing each individual s communication skills Developing and delivering training packages to teachers therapists support workers and parents have also formed a large part of the work I worked on the assessment and training team at the ACE Centre from October 1999 to April 2013 This is a national specialist centre for individuals who require supportive strategies including assistive technology to support their communication and learning I held positions as an Assistive Technology Consultant Senior Development Officer and Project Manager Within this last role I managed the implementation of the National Communication Aids Project on behalf of the ACE Centre and managed a number of other projects relating to Assistive Technology on behalf of the ACE Centre The most recent project involvement is within a recent DfE project I contributed to the resulting published document The future of AAC services in England a framework for equitable and effective commissioning As a result of growth in ATtherapy private practise I am currently working solely as an Independent Speech and Language Therapist Much of my independent work now focuses on providing specialist Speech Language Therapy services to individuals with a wide range of communication needs specialising in supporting individuals with physical disabilities learning disabilities and or autistic spectrum disorder who require access to assistive technology We accept direct referrals and also referrals from Case Management

    homes Over the following 8 years I had the opportunity to include children with special educational needs into my caseload and obtain an NVQ3 Diagnostic and Therapeutic Award specific to SLT By 2005 I decided I would like to specialise in AAC from low tech symbols to high tech communication devices I attended MMU accredited training in Assistive Technology at the ACE Centre North and continued to work under guidance

    nearly six years further experience working at the Ace Centre North as an Assitive Technology Technician with a strong focus on supporting the rest of the team with the wide range of specialist technology available for assessment and loan purposes The role involved delivering a range of specialist software and hardware training presenting at conferences and assisting with carrying out assessments particularly with what at that time was quite new specialist Eyegaze technology Following on from the Ace Centre I worked as an information officer and technical support at Inclusive Technology a company that produces and sells specialist software and hardware Over the last two years I have been working as an Assistive Technologist within a specialist college with my primary focus involving using specialist and mainstream technologies and coming up with innovative solutions to provide our students with as much independence as possible This ranges from using complex technologies such as Eyegaze setting up environmental control systems creating grid sets with specialist software so that students can access things that other people may take for granted such as their favourite music finding solutions so that our students can access computers and working as part of a wider multidisciplinary team
