    Mearns found itself at the centre of attention on Wednesday 26th July 2014 when it played host to the Queen s Baton Relay East Ren Locals turned out in numbers to cheer on baton bearer Russell Macmillan a local blind double transplant recipient who established East Renfrewshire s Good Causes the Avenue s nominated charity who carried the baton throughout the length of the mall applauded by well wishers every step of the way Amongst a day packed with free fun festivities The Commonwealth Youth Circus presented walk rounds and workshops around the shopping centre throughout the day to keep the well wishers entertained Michelle McCabe Centre Manager at The Avenue said The day was a great success the rain even stopped just as Russell arrived at The Avenue An historic day at The Avenue the feedback from shoppers and locals was fantastic with families flocking to the mall to wave their flags join in the celebrations and cheer on Russell And congratulations to Lorna McGill who won four premium tickets to the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in our competition in conjunction with official sponsor AG Barr Watch our video of the day here See more photographs from the day

    offered training to staff on understanding dementia and its impacts Julie Murray Director of East Renfrewshire CHCP opened the training session saying Everyone has a role to play in making East Renfrewshire a dementia friendly community and we are delighted to be kick starting the training with The Avenue Shopping Centre who are committed to supporting people living with dementia and their carers The training was led by Zaid Tariq of CHCP who said Older people including those with dementia are often more frequent customers of town centre shops Most say they want to keep going out and about using local shops and services That s why we chose to kick off our Dementia Friendly Training programme in The Avenue Around 1 600 people in East Renfrewshire are living with dementia and this number will only increase in the coming years Quite often people living with dementia can lose confidence in themselves and worry about how they will manage in shops and businesses This training programme will help both retailers and The Avenue management team understand dementia and learn how they can help those shoppers living with dementia in our community Michelle McCabe Centre Manager at The Avenue said We are proud to be chosen as the first recipient of this innovative training programme which provided myself my management team and our retailers with some tremendous insights into dementia and advice about what practical measures we could take to ensure that we can build a Dementia Friendly community The Avenue has a long and proud tradition of playing an active role in the local community and we are delighted to continue that tradition through our participation in Dementia Friendly training Scotland s National Dementia Strategy emphasises the importance of supporting people to remain in their own homes for as long
