a blistering time of one hour four minutes and 13 seconds to beat Sky team mate Chris Froome by 1 16 Spain s Luis Leon Sanchez led the race of truth for a long period before seeing his effort toppled by Froome and then Wiggins in quick succession The Rabobank rider settled for third place 1 50 slower than Wiggins Italy s Vincenzo Nibali Liquigas put in a solid performance to preserve his third place on the podium I wanted to go out with a bang said Wiggins after his second time trial win of the Tour This is what I ultimately do best time trialling It was a superb course and I just wanted to finish the job off in style There was a lot of emotion in the last 10km there when I knew I was ahead Everything was going through my mind all the years of getting to this point all the disappointments like crashing out of the Tour last year It doesn t get much bigger than this Wiggins will ride to Paris with a 3 21 lead over Froome with Nibali 6 19 down in third Defending champion Cadel Evans BMC had a day to forget after finishing 5 54 behind Wiggins Evans was also caught by BMC team mate Tejay van Garderen with 20km remaining American Van Garderen the white jersey as the race s best young rider posted the seventh best time to secure his fifth place in the GC while Evans dropped below Spain s Haimar Zubeldia RadioShack into seventh almost 16 minutes down on the new champion Another youngster Thibaut Pinot FDJ secured 10th place with a spirited ride while French compatriot Pierre Rolland Europcar did enough to retain his eighth place in the GC the highest for the host nation The top five in Paris is completed by Belgian Jurgen van den Broeck Lotto Belisol who will finish the race 10 15 down on Britain s first ever Tour de France victor Wiggins s victory was his second stage success in the 2012 Tour after he beat team mate Froome in the race s previous time trial in Besancon for stage nine It was Team Sky s fifth victory of a dominant race and Britain s sixth following additional stage wins for Team Sky s Mark Cavendish twice Froome and David Millar Garmin Sharp It s been an amazing Tour for us but today did not come as any surprise said Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford It s all gone to plan and Brad showed that he s the best rider in this race This is a Tour that suited Bradley and you can see why we stuck with him Wiggins has never been lower than second place in the Tour s GC after completing the opening time trial in Liege on 30th June seven seconds slower than Switzerland s Fabian Cancellara The 32 year old took the yellow jersey after placing third at La Planche des Belles Filles in stage seven in the Jura mountains won by Froome two days before the first time trial in Besancon consolidated the pair s dominance Further success in Chartres has all but confirmed Wiggins as the first British winner of the Tour de France in its 109 year history Wiggins arrived at the Tour having already made history after becoming the first man to win Paris Nice the Tour of Romandie and the Criterium du Dauphine stage races in the same season With Froome joining Wiggins on the podium in an historic British one two it also represents the first time two riders from the same team have topped the overall standings since 1997 when Jan Ullrich beat defending champion and Telekom team mate Bjarne Riis The last time two riders from the same nation topped the standings was back in 1984 when Laurent Fignon beat fellow Frenchman Bernard Hinault The Tour concludes on Sunday with a 120km processional stage to Paris which is expected to culminate in a bunch sprint on the Champs Elysees Posted in News Tagged bar italia bradley wiggins frith street Leave a reply Cav back like a missle to win stage 18 of TdF Posted on July 21 2012 by admin Reply After a quiet Tour for Britain s Mark Cavendish so far bu his standards he arrived back in amongst it like a rocket yesterday when he started sprinting from 600 metres out to take stage 18 after a great lead out by Bradley Wiggins and Edvald Boasson Hagen This report from Eurosport Team Sky s world champion surged down the closing straight in Brive la Gaillarde to win the 222 5km stage ahead of Matt Goss Orica GreenEdge and the green jersey Peter Sagan Liquigas After his second stage win of an otherwise quiet race Cavendish embraced team mate Bradley Wiggins the yellow jersey who comfortably finished in the pack to preserve his lead in the general classification ahead of Saturday s final time trial to Chartres Wiggins leads another Briton Chris Froome in the overall standings by two minutes and five seconds in a Tour which has underlined Team Sky s status as the best all round squad in professional cycling Cavendish s victory was his 22nd Tour de France scalp and Team Sky s fourth win in a race which is now destined to be won by a British rider for the very first time in history Led out in textbook fashion by Wiggins and Norwegian national champion Edvald Boasson Hagen Cavendish launched his sprint early to overtake breakaway riders Luis Leon Sanchez Rabobank and Nicolas Roche Ag2r La Mondiale in the closing 100m before powering over the line several bike lengths ahead of Australian Goss I had to go early because the break was still away Cavendish explained I haven t done anything this Tour so I had so much energy I knew I d get the win I knew I d got what it took today Sky team manager Dave Brailsford was ecstatic after a fourth win for his riders and yet another show of solidarity from the British team I knew Bradley and the guys were very motivated to repay Cav s loyalty and hard work with a good lead out Brailsford said The win was never in doubt and he s demonstrated once again what a great world champion he is Saturday s 53 5km time trial is expected to be won by overwhelming favourite Wiggins while Cavendish s return to form will put the Manxman down as firm favourite for Sunday s concluding stage on the Champs Elysees in Paris Friday s stage from the town of Blagnac near Toulouse represented the last chance for many teams to get on the win sheet ahead of a final weekend expected to be dominated by Team Sky A fast start saw an early breakaway foiled before a second 16 man group formed around 150km from the finish The break was made up of some high profile riders including Alex Vinokourov Astana stage 12 winner David Millar Garmin Michael Albasini GreenEdge and Boasson Hagen With many teams not represented the gap never crept much over the three minute mark as riders from Euskaltel Omega Pharma Quick Step Saur Sojasun and Rabobank all combined on the front of the peloton to cut the deficit The chase was disrupted by a collision around 100km from the finish when a large dog ran into the peloton bringing down a cluster of riders including Russian Denis Menchov Katusha and the Belgian Philippe Gilbert BMC An angry Gilbert had to be pulled clear by his manager John Lelangue after remonstrating with the owners of the dog on the side of the road By the time the race hit the last of four minor climbs 10km from the finish just three riders from the break were still out ahead with Vinokourov using all his experience to combine with Luca Paolini Katusha and Adam Hansen Lotto Belisol Ireland s Roche counter attacked from the peloton which was rolling along just 30 seconds in arrears Roche was joined by Germany s Andreas Kloden RadioShack and Spaniard Sanchez winner of stage 14 The six riders came together inside the final 5km as the rain started to fall A slender 10 second gap was reduced to nothing inside the final kilometre after Team Sky organised the chase Cavendish reduced to a team role in support of Wiggins and Froome for much of this year s Tour was going to be the only winner after he leapt off the front surged past Sanchez and Roche and roared to victory to complete yet another successful day for Sky Posted in News Leave a reply Bradley Wiggins moving closer to that historic Tour de France win Posted on July 20 2012 by admin Reply Where s me glasses Bradley Wiggins moved a step closer to becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France as Alejandro Valverde won the final mountain stage in Peyragudes the 17th of this year s race This report from Eurosport Wiggins finished third 19 seconds behind the Movistar rider and on the wheel of his Sky team mate Chris Froome Wiggins still holds a lead of two minutes and five seconds on GC over Froome who paced the maillot jaune up the final climb and laid aside his own ambitions for the stage victory Third placed Vincenzo Nibali lost 18 seconds on the final climb and is now 2 41 behind Wiggins Nibali had put the leaders under some early pressure after attacking on the descent of the Cat 1 Col de Mente just over 100km from the finish but the Italian decided to drop back into the peloton after a heated discussion with Valverde in the leading group The 143 5km 17th stage concluded with a 15 4km ascent of the Col du Peyresourde at an average gradient of 5 1 percent coming right after the descent from the HC Port de Bales climb and was considered the last chance to deny Wiggins the yellow jersey At that point for the first time I thought I d just won the Tour It was incredible said Wiggins when recalling his emotions approaching the finish in Peyragudes Friday s flat stage is followed by a 53 5km time trial to Chartres where Wiggins is expected to extend his advantage before the three week race finishes in Paris on Sunday Valverde s win was his first in the Tour following a two year ban for doping and a fifth victory of his comeback season I m absolutely delighted with the win said 32 year old Valverde who now has four career stage wins in the Tour I couldn t believe it when I was alone and the script today gave me much joy I m so pleased the team finally got a victory after all the effort we have put in The Spaniard made his decisive move on the Port de Bales climb attacking from the fragmented leading group to cross the summit 30km from the finish in pole position 2 20 ahead of the main yellow jersey group With all 16 remaining riders of the initial break caught by the main pack by the time the final climb had started Valverde rode alone in pursuit of glory as a string of attacks further down the hill blew the chasing group to pieces Defending champion Cadel Evans BMC was one of the first riders to be dropped by the yellow jersey group which was being led by Ivan Basso the Liquigas team mate of Nibali Belgians Jurgen van den Broeck and Jelle Vanendert of Lotto Belisol both put in large digs on the front of the main group while a strong attack by Frenchman Thibalt Pinot FDJ BigMat saw Nibali distanced from the leaders But once again it was Team Sky duo Wiggins and Froome who emerged strongest and entering the final 4km the top two riders in this year s GC pulled ahead of all their rivals Froome looking very much the stronger of the two kept on checking his and looking over his shoulder to encourage the yellow jersey Rather than pressing on to contest Valverde for the stage victory Froome chose to work for his team leader The pair slowed and were almost caught by Pinot by the time they crossed the line 19 seconds down on Valverde We were not here today to win the stage today our focus was to protect the yellow jersey Froome said after Sky consolidated their stranglehold at the top of the standings I wouldn t say anything was definite yet he added I d rather finish things off before we start talking about the overall win Wiggins was quick to thank Froome for another selfless display in the mountains He s been a fantastic team mate during this Tour de France For sure one day he ll win the Tour and I ll be there beside him to do it he said American Tejay van Garderen BMC rose to fifth in the GC after Spaniard Haimar Zubeldia RadioShack struggled on the final climb of the day White jersey Van Garderen s team mate Evans rises to sixth place despite finishing 2 10 behind Valverde The Australian is almost 10 minutes behind rival Wiggins after a second successive testing day in the Pyrenees France s Thomas Voeckler Europcar the double stage winner secured the polka dot jersey by taking maximum points over the first three climbs of the day ahead of rival Frederik Kessiakoff of Astana Voeckler now has an unassailable 11 point lead over the Swede in the king of the mountains standings Slovak youngster Peter Sagan Liquigas finished the stage safely to retain the green jersey on his debut Tour Sagan holds a 102 point lead over Germany s Andre Greipel Lotto Belisol and will enter Paris in green barring any mishap Friday s 222 5km stage 18 from Blagnac to Brive la Gaillarde includes four minor climbs but could well be decided by a stage wins and none better than yesterday what an effort We at Bar Italia also love the reports of Blazin Saddles and he is on top form with the following report Tommy Hill Figure Warning this blog contains dangerous levels of Thomas Voeckler panache Reader discretion is advised If you re not partial to a piece of Tommy V or Team Europcar then there s really no point reading beyond this point Then again if you re not a fan of Voeckler or Jean Rene Bernaudeau s boys in green then you might as well never come back to these hallowed pages again because quite frankly we don t want your type hanging around Indeed if this is the case you should probably take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror and try and figure out how you can become a better person Unlike his rivals Remi di Gregorio and Frank Schleck Voeckler sure does like a good Tour rest day Last week the 33 year old veteran with the dodgy knee roared back after a troubled opening phase of the race with a virtuoso win in Bellegarde sur Valserine the day after the Tour s first day off A week later he did just the same but with even more gusto Europcar s top dogs it seems are taking it in turns winning the Tour s most prestigious stages That s four out of the last five mountain stages snared by one of the peloton s poorest outfits in the fiscal sense only with Voeckler and Pierre Rolland neck and neck on two apiece Alpe d Huez Col du Colombier Croix de Fer Madeleine Toussuire Aubisque Tourmalet Col d Aspin Col de Peyresourde two men have conquered these fabled climbs and run off with the spoils and in quite extraordinary fashion Voeckler s latest audacious coup started out as a quest to move up in the mountains standings and ended up with the Frenchman seizing both the win and the polka dot jersey in sweltering heat after crossing every peak in pole position Unlike stage 15 before the rest day won by Voeckler s close friend Pierrick Fedrigo the start of stage 16 saw a break form quicker than you could say Xipamide diuretic poisoning Voeckler was key from the outset riding a high tempo on the front as he began to treat the spectators to the full elasticity of his wonderfully malleable face Showing off an astonishing array of trademark grimaces Voeckler ran the gamut of virtually every possible facial frolic from gurning to eye popping lip smacking to gasping swallowing to nasal wrinkling Next to him Laurens ten Dam a modern day caveman if ever there was one dribbled a long line of spit and

was the first time since 1995 that there was no Italian on the Giro final podium Garmin Barracuda s best previous Grand Tour result was fourth overall in the 2009 Tour de France for Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain Fourth spot was also the previous best placing for Canada in a three week stage race taken by Steve Bauer back in the 1988 Tour de France In a ding dong battle with Rodriguez for the overall honour Hesjedal moved into the lead on stage seven but lost it four days later when the Spaniard attacked on the uphill finish in Assisi Hesjedal then returned to the top spot with a late attack at Cervinia on stage 14 but faded when Rodriguez regained the lead with another final kilometre charge 24 hours later LITTLE COMFORT With less than a minute between the two top riders as they went into the third week not even two mammoth stages in the Dolomites on Friday and Saturday seemed able to create a decisive gap Only Sunday s final time trial produced a definitive victory for Hesjedal I had to take a lot of risks strategically but it s been worth it I ve been riding my bike for a long time and had a lot of not so good moments he said This is just the result of working hard And the team s been behind me 100 percent and I ve just thrived off that support After seeing off some huge pre race favourites like double Giro winner Ivan Basso and Luxembourg s Frank Schleck Hesjedal would not be drawn on if he will race July s Tour de France I just want to enjoy this Giro win for now Hesjedal said after the fourth victory of his professional career We ll wait and see De Gendt took a surprise podium spot after his spectacular lone mountain victory on the Passo del Stelvio on Saturday to leave Michele Scarponi promoted as winner last year after Alberto Contador s drugs ban in fourth Katusha s Rodriguez gained little comfort from winning the points classification ahead of world champion Mark Cavendish while Italy s only cheer on home soil was Matteo Rabottini being named King of the Mountains and Lampre winning the team points race Posted in News Tagged Bar Italia Giro d Italia Coffee Frith Street Ryder Hesjedal Leave a reply Giro d Italia 2012 De Gendt victorious on stage 20 as Rodriguez holds on to the lead Posted on May 27 2012 by admin Reply This report on the penultimate day in the Giro 2012 from Felix Lowe of Europsport In one of modern cycling s most memorable individual performances the 25 year old Vacansoleil DCM all rounder attacked from a breakaway on the fabled Alpine pass to take the illustrious Cima Coppi prize and move into fourth place in the general classification two minutes and 18 seconds behind race leader Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain Rodriguez finished the 219km stage from Caldes in fourth place 3 22 down on De Gendt to consolidate his pink jersey The Katusha climber gained 14 seconds on Canada s Ryder Hesjedal in the GC after distancing the Garmin Barracuda rider in the closing moments of a thrilling stage Hesjedal is now 31 seconds down on Rodriguez ahead of Sunday s deciding 30km time trial in Milan with defending champion Michele Scarponi Lampre up to third place 1 51 in arrears But the day belonged to De Gendt who put on a display of outlandish attacking riding so reminiscent of his compatriot the great Eddy Merckx Starting the day almost six minutes down on Rodriguez and in eighth place in the GC De Gendt was part of the select group that had formed around the maglia rosa on the first of two legendary climbs that concluded the stage the Cat 1 Mortirolo A large group of 14 riders including Friday s winner Roman Kreuziger Astana had broken clear of the peloton after just 22km or racing on the first of three classified climbs in the opening half of the race s queen stage From the inItial group Switzerland s Oliver Zaugg RadioShack Nissan broke clear at the start of the punishing Mortirolo once described by Lance Armstrong as the hardest climb I have ever ridden While Zaugg rode clear from a chasing group of four riders further down the hill the main pack had been considerably trimmed after an early dig by the pink jersey Rodriguez Approaching the summit De Gendt made his move attacking on one of the narrow asphalt sections of road that boasts a brutal gradient of 22 per cent Zaugg crossed the summit of the Mortirolo in pole position to pick up the Cima Pantani a prize dedicated to the memory of the late Marco Pantani whose finest performance in the Giro came on his devastating ascent of the same climb in 1994 De Gendt passed over the top around three minutes down and soon caught the remnants of the day s initial break on the fast descent In the valley between the two major climbs of the Mortirolo and Stelvio the De Gendt leading group was joined by two Euskaltel riders Mikel Nieve and Jon Izagirre as well as Astana s Tanel Kangert and the 2004 Giro champion Damiano Cunego Lampre An exhausted Zaugg was caught with 30km remaining as the seven man leading group rode 3 40 clear of the pink jersey chasing group Moments into the final 22km climb to the summit Zaugg was the first to crack and was soon followed by stage 16 winner Izagirre Kangert and Movistar s Andrey Amador the Costa Rican winner of stage 14 De Gendt s initial attack was foiled only by Nieve as Cunego became slightly distanced Although Nieve was celebrating his 27th birthday his Belgian colleague was not in the mood to give him any gifts waving the Spaniard through to help set the pace as a resurgent Cunego slowly returned to their wheels Then De Gendt made his decisive move attacking unexpectedly in a tunnel still a huge 13km from the finish What the world then witnessed will go down as one of the great moments in the Giro s history as De Gendt not only rode clear of his fellow escapees but also increased his lead over the main chasing group at an alarming rate At one moment just inside the final 10km De Gendt was a huge 5 35 ahead of the Rodriguez group putting the Belgian within five seconds of the virtual pink jersey With De Gendt looking more and more assured the win quickly became a certainty the question was how much time the outsider could take from the ostensible race favourites Back with the main group it was left to Canadian Hesjedal himself considered an outsider at the start of the race to lead the chase Italy s Ivan Basso Liquigas and Colombian Rigoberto Uran Team Sky were first to fade swiftly followed by the diminutive climber Domenico Pozzovivo Colnago As De Gendt completed the final few snow capped hairpin bends the Stelvio boasts a total of 40 such corners Scarponi made an attack further down the mountain dropping both Hesjedal and Rodriguez De Gendt secured the biggest win of his career with outstretched arms and a huge grin The Belgian youngster completed the gruelling stage in a time of six hours 54 minutes and 41 seconds to take the Cima Coppi prize named after the legendary Italian rider Fausto Coppi who once thought he was going to die while climbing the Stelvio during the 1953 Giro Cunego held on to take second place 56 seconds off the pace while Nieve secured third 2 50 down But a late attack by the pink jersey saw Rodriguez distance Hesjedal and pass Scarponi in the final 500 metres the Spaniard finishing fourth 3 22 behind De Gendt Scarponi crossed the line for fifth at 3 54 two seconds ahead of Hesjedal who will now enter the final ITT in Milan needing to overturn a 31 second deficit on race leader Rodriguez Scarponi consolidated his third place in the GC after Basso could only finish 10th on the stage 4 54 down But the defending champion will have to look over his shoulder at De Gendt during Sunday s time trial with Belgium s new hero a real threat for the final podium position De Gendt a far stronger time triallist than both Scarponi and Rodriguez is now fourth at 2 18 Should Rodriguez miss out on the pink jersey in Milan the Spaniard will take consolation with the red points jersey which he secured on Saturday with his fourth place finish overturning Team Sky sprinter Mark Cavendish s lead by one slender point Italy s Matteo Rabottini Farnese Vini secured the red jersey mountains Leave a reply Italian youngster Rabottini takes stage 15 of the Giro Posted on May 21 2012 by admin Reply Italian youngster Matteo Rabottini of Farnese Vini dramatically won stage 15 of the Giro d Italia atop the Piani dei Resinelli ahead of new race leader Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain Rabottini pretty much led the 169 kilometre stage from Burso Arsizio from start to finish crossing four summits in the lead and even crashing once before being caught inside the final 500 metres by Katusha climber Rodriguez But in spectacular scenes on the waterlogged Cat 2 climb Rabottini thrilled the home crowds by somehow summoning the strength to pip Rodriguez in the final sprint and take his first ever Grand Tour stage win Rodriguez took consolation in seizing back the maglia rosa from Canada s Ryder Hesjedal Garmin Barracuda who finished 39 seconds back and now trails the Spaniard by 30 seconds in the general classification Another miserable day in north Italy started with 70 kilometres of racing across flat roads in the Brianza area culminating in an intermediate sprint at Lecco ahead of the first of four classified climbs Rabottini escaped from the peloton alongside Frenchman Guillaume Bonnafond Ag2r La Mondiale 18 kilometres into the race moments before news filtered through of the withdrawal of one of the pre race favourites Frank Schleck of Luxembourg Posted in News Reply Britain s Mark Cavendish took his third win of the Giro d Italia with victory in stage 13 at Cervere after an incident free bunch sprint This report from Felix Lowe at Eurosport Cavendish was always the favourite to take the 121km stage the shortest of this year s race Two riders Martijn Keizer Vacansoleil DCM and Francesco Failli Farnese Vini broke clear of the bunch after just 1 5km of racing as the road headed uphill from the coastal town of Savona and into the Ligurian Apennine mountains The pair built up a maximum lead of five minutes as they crossed the summit of the only classified climb of the day the Cat 4 Montezemolo but were eventually reeled in with 22km remaining as the pace quickened in the peloton It was Dutchman Keizer s fifth day riding in a break since the start of the race and his second time alongside Italian Failli with whom he formed part of the leading group days earlier in stage 10 With no tight bends or technical difficulties in the lead up to the finish Friday s stage 13 promised a pure sprinting duel between the race s fast men But Cavendish almost reacquainted himself with the tarmac when coming close to touching wheels with both team mate Geraint Thomas and Orica GreenEdge rival Matthew Goss in the final straight Boxed in on the right hand side of the road Cavendish also found himself shoulder to shoulder with new foe Roberto Ferrari the Italian stage 11 winner who caused the mass pile up after swerving into his British counterpart back on Danish soil in stage three As the road opened out in front Cavendish spotted a gap and made his move only to check his pace as former HTC team mate Goss appeared to close the door The Australian who initially led out the sprint faded in the final 100m allowing Cavendish and a whole raft of riders to pass None could match the world champion for speed as Cavendish powered to a 10th career win in the Giro It was the 26 year old s third of the race and Cavendish had time to raise three fingers in symbolic celebration as Kristoff s late surge behind saw the Norwegian pip Renshaw for second I came into the Giro in really good form and ideally I d have liked to have been able to kind of relax through the first week but the crash changed all that added Cavendish It took me a week to really fully recover and get my legs back again The guys are really looking after me though they are keeping me protected throughout the stages which is perfect and I want to go to Milan and win the points jersey Italy s Sacha Modolo Colnago took fourth ahead of compatriot Elia Favilli Farnese Vini while Goss was forced to settle for sixth There was no change in the overall standings ahead of Saturday s first rendezvous with the mountains Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez Katusha retained a 17 second lead over Canada s Ryder Hesjedal Garmin Barracuda with Frenchman Sandy Casar FDJ in third at 29 seconds The Giro continues over the weekend with two gruelling stages both with tough summit finishes in the Alps The Giro is shown LIVE each race day in Bar Italia and follow Felix Lowe on Twitter saddleblaze Posted in News Tagged bar italia giro d Italia frith street cycling mark
