    existing extended school site in Kexbrough to the north of Barnsley town centre The building sits on a sloping site and is finished to present an appropriate aesthetic look whilst blending in with its surroundings The ALC will provide facilities for 1324 students with a gross internal area of approximately 11 568 m2 over four storeys The building is designed around a central atrium hub with four distinct wings providing a variety of flexible teaching spaces divided by a series of fixed and movable folding walls The ground floor accommodates a 300 seat theatre which can be utilised for lectures and performances which can be linked to the central hub to open up the stage to a wider audience whilst providing the main dining and social spaces The ALC is also designed to cater for a wide range of sports activities with a purpose built sports hall external sports facilities and a retained sports pavilion Basic description of building A four storey building planned around the natural topography of the site with significant visual impact when viewed from the north The building is designed around a large central atrium which acts as the main social dining meeting and circulation space and comprises four wings offering a variety of teaching spaces from small group spaces up to large flexible teaching areas Each teaching space has been designed where practicable to accommodate good levels of natural daylighting from both windows and rooflights providing dynamic views thoughout the building these windows are provided with automatic opening vents which monitor both the temperature and air quality within the building to ensure that the optimum teaching environment is maintained Externally the building is positioned within its own landscaped setting providing several areas of hard and soft play areas for the students all of which can
