    from SE Wales Club and Dennis Wray from the Dales club impacted the ground hard First aiders attended and the air ambulance was called Both pilots received emergency attention at the scene and were then taken away Sadly Steve Allen passed away on arrival at hospital Following emergency surgery Dennis Wray was admitted to intensive care but sadly passed away on the evening of the 17 th August There will be a full investigation into this tragic accident but for the moment our thoughts must be with Steve and Dennis s family and friends CAA decision on Mode S On July 1 st the Civil Aviation Authority published its final decision on the second phase of expansion in the use of Mode S transponders in UK airspace Following extensive consultation on a variety of proposals the CAA has decided to focus on the busiest and most complex areas of airspace for the expansion of Mode S use The CAA intends to introduce regulation to require all aircraft except gliders flying within Class A to C controlled airspace to carry and operate a Mode S transponder with effect from October 1 st 2009 For gliders read also hang gliders and paragliders The Mode S transponder carriage regulations will also be extended to include gliders with effect from April 6th 2012 Amendments to the regulations will bring Self Launching Motor Gliders into line with the regulations for all other gliders There will still be an option for Air Traffic Control to allow non transponder equipped flights into the airspace providing safety and efficiency levels can be assured So far so good There has been no mention of further tightening of the rules to include all GA aircraft wider areas of airspace or Transponder Mandatory Zones Yet This is not the end of the Mode S story The full CAA decision and further background material is available at www caa co uk modes A fact sheet on Mode S is also available at www caa co uk docs 1 Mode 20S 20decision 20 20In 20Focus pdf Brits 4 th at Worlds Great Britain claimed a creditable 4 th position at the fifth FAI Paragliding Accuracy World Championships in Croatia over the 21 st to 25 th June Uncharacteristic wet weather reduced the competition from a maximum 12 round to a five round event Competitors flew from a 1 000 feet tall hill with landing in a small valley below with the objective of landing as close as possible to a 3cm disc at the centre of a target area Target approaches were not easy as pilots had to cope with both sinky and bouyant conditions in the valley landing field Brits Andy Shaw 5 th and Andy Webster 7 th flew very well to achieve top ten placings with Don Bodill Nick Simmons and Tony Blacker all making valuable contributions to the Great Britain score China took the first two individual places with a Czech pilot taking third Fierce competition from the Czech

    first aid dealing with fractures and back and head injuries plus how to call the emergency services The aim is to make you feel confident to assess and take control of the situation The Big Fat Repack costs only 26 less than a commercial repack Book online at www tvhgc co uk bfr World distance claims On December 14 th South African Nevil Hulett flew 501 1km aboard a Mac Magus from Copperton South Africa to claim the world paragliding open distance record On the same flight Nevil overflew a declared goal at 411km to claim the distance to goal record too The existing records are 461 6km Marcelo Prieto 2007 and 368 9km Urban Valic 2006 respectively Congratulations to Nevil on a brilliant flight Celtic Cup anniversary To celebrate the 35 th Anniversary of the Celtic Cup this year s competition is to be held at the event s spiritual home of Mt Leinster in Ireland The competition based in nearby Bunclody will take place on May 1 st 4 th and will be open to both both hang glider and paraglider pilots This is by no means a serious competition say the organisers It s a fun for all event music drinking and debauchery are planned for the Saturday night There will be backup activities should the weather be unfavourable More details next month or contact Geoff McMahon 00353 862 338127 hang gliding or Eoin Hogan 00353 868 122030 paragliding New John Silvester lecture John Silvester is putting together a new lecture illustrated with video and still photography on his travels under the working title of The Chogo Lungma crossing 150km across the high Karakorum with just an extra fleece and a paraglider John s talk covers the last ten years of paragliding discovery in India Western Nepal and the Karakorum of Pakistan It helped him make a paragliding variation on the ultimate mountain trek the Hispar Snow Lake traverse via the Chogo Lungma which he describes as a flight that was a step too far and has changed me for ever One of the first outings for the new lecture is at the Cumbria Soaring Club North Lakes Hotel Penrith on Friday March 6 th at 8pm Tickets are 5 for CSC members and 7 for non members Details are at www cumbriasoaringclub co uk and some of John s past adventures are on You Tube if you search for John Silvester Germany accepts EN testing regime In November a meeting of Germany s round table a working group answering to their civil aviation authority agreed that future testing of paragliders would be to EN 926 2 flight tests and EN 926 1 load tests The meeting at Lake Starnberg in Bavaria was attended by representatives of the DHV European manufacturers the test houses and the Paraglider Manufacturers Association Spokesman Hans Bausenwein commented The EN standards will be adopted to prevent misunderstanding The LTF 1 to 3 classification system will be replaced by the EN structure Nova

    to unforeseen circumstances Jocky Sanderson is no longer able to give a talk at the show Entrance is 5 to BHPA members with a valid membership card and 10 to non members doors open 10am For further information please visit theflyingshow co uk John Dickenson presented with FAI Diploma The Kernow Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association held a reception at the Railway Inn St Agnes in September in honour of John Dickenson inventor of the flexible wing hang glider During the reception past BHPA President Noel Whittall on behalf of CIVL President Flip Koetsier presented John with the FAI Hang Gliding Diploma for his pivotal role in developing the sport of hang gliding Jason Board of the British Hang Gliding Museum and historian Mark Woodhams have constructed a replica of the original Mk1 1963 vintage John Dickenson hang glider design The replica has wooden leading edges and keel a taped together polythene sail and no top rigging John witnessed the replica s first ground hops and it is hoped to ridge soar the glider later when conditions are suitable Brits dominate at Annecy British pilots Brendan Reid Jon Shaw and Tom Payne collected the lion s share of the prizes at the Annecy XC Challenge the friendly XC league for pilots flying from Planfait and Col de la Forclaz Jon Shaw was second in the Sport class DHV2 3 and above with a total of 1 100km while Tom Payne recorded the second highest scoring flight of the year with a 105km FAI triangle and also won the tandem class Brendan Reid dominated the Fun class DHV 2 and below with the longest flight a 111km out and return second position overall and the longest open distance flight all completed during two weeks in early May Between them the three collected over 600 euros worth of prizes to the dismay of the local French pilots Brett s top ten finish Brett Janaway of xTc Paragliding finished 7 th in the Slovenian XC League at his first attempt this year despite entering with only five months of the 07 08 season to go Missing the deadline for his final 116km flight entry by 48 hours meant 7 th place instead of 4 th but he has made an excellent start in the 08 09 season by scoring the first 100km flight of the season propelling him into 1 st place The 07 08 Slovenian XC League had 321 entrants from a total population of about 2 million The 2008 UK XC League currently had 127 entries for a population of er 60 million These Slovenians clearly know something we don t Downed paraglider false alarm An emergency operation to find a paraglider in distress was called off near Whitby North Yorks in September after the subject of the search turned out to be a paper lantern Police fire crews an SAR team the coastguard and the RAF were all called in after a member of the public reported seeing a paraglider

    th and Andy Webster 8 th were awarded FAI Diplomas for their top ten finishes with new boy Mark Dann narrowly missing out with a fantastic 11 th placing Don Bodill achieved 21 st place and Chris Haynes who was a last minute replacement for John Lawrence flew very well to take 24 th place despite little preparation Great Britain were at a disadvantage being unable to field any female pilots whereas the top two teams Serbia and Czech Republic could field the full compliment of five male pilots and two female pilots The Great Britain team would like to thank the BHPA for funding towards the championships Full results and photos are on www epa2008 org X Alps 2009 Applications are now open for next year s gruelling Red Bull X Alps bivvy competition which will start on July 19 th The lists close on September 30 th see www redbullxalps com and the 30 selected pilots will be announced shortly afterwards Entrants will race over an 850km course through the Alps taking up to 20 days The organisers are currently finalising the route which will go from Austria to the Mediterranean coast via Germany Italy Switzerland and France Competitors must carry their equipment but nominate a supporter to provide food clothing and navigational advice The race continues day and night until the first pilot reaches goal A huge audience followed last year s race via Red Bull s live online tracking service British pilot Aidan Toase finished sixth in the 2007 event and vowed to come back for more Paragliding Accuracy Nationals If you would like some end of year fun flying this year s Paragliding Accuracy National Championships will be hosted by Beyond Extreme in the Shropshire Welsh Borders area on October 25 th and 26 th The championships will be a hill launch event and pilots must have a CP Hill rating or higher to enter the main competition There will also be a novice competition open to pilots of any pilot rating who are new to accuracy flying Elementary rated pilots must be accompanied by their own instructor There will be transport to the top of the hill and families are welcome at this spectator friendly event The Championships is not an FAI event and therefore you do not have to worry about having FAI licences Depending on conditions it is proposed to allow free flying during some of the competition rounds In addition to national honours there will be trophies for best female best veteran best newcomer most improved pilot and best novice Camping facilities will be available at the Royal Hill at Edgerley between Melverley and Pentre SJ 351 174 approximately ten miles west of Shrewsbury Entry forms are available at the Beyond Extreme website at www beyondextreme co uk Pilots who entered last year s event and did not get a refund will only have to pay 10 of the entry fee More records for Mia Not content with the three Class
