has now closed and the final response of the BHPA Airspace Panel can be downloaded here For the moment all we can do is hope that our continuing input has a positive influence on the final outcome of this consultation process Further information will be posted as and when it becomes available The CAA Mode S Transponder story so far CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Final Response June 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Draft Response v2 May 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Summary April 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation March 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation January 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Consultation 2006 Temporary Airspace Restrictions 7 14 July 2008 RAF Fairford will once again be hosting the Royal International Air Tattoo RIATT from the 7 14 July With some 400 aircraft attending temporary airspace restrictions will be in place for the duration of the event Full details of the airspace restrictions that will be in force during this event are available for download as a pdf file 2 4mb approx Homegrown Festival Cancelled The following Press Release from Hugh confirms that this event has sadly been cancelled In 2006 pilots were chomping at the bit for a UK flying festival and the Homegrown Festival seemed to hit the spot with over 800 pilots coming along But this year there just isn t anywhere near the same level of enthusiasm for a second Homegrown Festival Ticket sales and trade bookings are far from the number we d expect three months away from the event and I just don t get the same feeling of support and energy So despite the piece in this month s Skywings and the ads in Cross Country and Skywings its with regret that we ve decided to cancel the 2008 Homegrown Festival Maybe I was being optimistic thinking the UK could hold two big festivals in one year it seems the UK flying community just isn t big enough to do so All proceeds were set to go to Flyability but I don t want to risk making a loss again like I did in 2006 so that s that I m pulling the plug and quite happy about the fact I ll get to do a lot more flying instead of organising this summer I m really sorry for any disappointment caused to pilots who ve already booked their tickets We ll be making full refunds to all ticket holders Thanks very much also to Northern Axis UK Airsports Passion Paragliding Custom the BHPA Madjester The Loft and Sky Paragliding for booking space we ll be refunding you too of course I wish Mark Leavesley all the best with the Triple X Festival coming up on 20 June Maybe another year we ll think about putting on Homegrown again but we d need a lot more commitment and perhaps that s only possible when there s only one big festival

the BGA web site at www gliding co uk findaclub clubdirectory htm These meetings are a great opportunity for members to engage with the rulemakers and further clarify our airspace needs We will shortly be providing guidance on how to respond to the consultation but these meetings will help you to develop your own personal view on how to respond We are calling on all glider pilots to make a response as was done to such great effect during the first round of consultation and as such the BGA urges ALL pilots to try to attend one of the meetings More information on the consultation process is on the BGA web site at www gliding co uk bgainfo airspace modes2008 htm Thanks Pete Stratten Chief Executive British Gliding Association The CAA Mode S Transponder story so far CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Final Response June 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Draft Response v2 May 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Summary April 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation March 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation January 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Consultation 2006 BHPA subs increase After eight years during which careful financial control prevented the need for an increase in subscriptions it has finally become necessary to raise BHPA subscriptions In reality the need has not arisen through rising costs as those have mostly remained well under control This year we will experience two significant changes to our income stream The first is the effect of the 2012 Olympics and the removal of UK Sport funding for non Olympic sports In 2008 our grant has halved and we anticipate that it will disappear totally in 2009 The second change is that many years ago when our insurance history was pretty poor we entered into a profit sharing agreement with our underwriters At the time there was no profit nor any prospect of profit only substantial losses for the underwriter However in the last two years underwriters have finally seen modest profits from our business and our broker has invoked the long forgotten profit sharing deal Unsurprisingly having only just moved into profit and seen a substantial portion of that having to be returned to us at the insurance renewal this year underwriters declined to continue with the profit sharing arrangement Changes in the law had also made the arrangement questionable in any event The result of these changes is that it has become necessary to raise subscriptions to the levels set out below The new fees will take effect on April 1st 2008 Schools are required to return any existing membership books that they have immediately New membership books are in production and will be sent out as soon as they are available Flying Member 84 Flying Member Family Group 75 Flying Member Under 18 64 Flying Member Under 16 46 Flying Member in full time education 64 Flying Member over 60 64 Flying Member over 75 46

menu item and follow the links It should be noted that the proposals are less draconian than last year s proposal of all aircraft in all airspace However the BHPA believes that they still represent a significant risk to both our activities and General Aviation as a whole Pending a full review of the CAA s documents our current position is that we do not believe that the transponder carriage proposed provides the CAA s stated safety improvements on a reasonable cost v benefit basis The BHPA team of Mark Turner Phil Jones and Tom Hardie will carry out an assessment of the CAA s documentation and provide you with their thoughts in sufficient time for you to respond by the consultation close of 17 00 on 31 st May 2008 Further updates will be made available on this web site as and when they become available This is YOUR airspace use we are talking about and if you don t seek to protect it officialdom takes the view that by silence you are stating that they do not affect you The CAA Mode S Transponder story so far CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Final Response June 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Draft Response v2 May 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation Summary April 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation March 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Phase 2 Consultation January 2008 CAA Mode S Transponder Consultation 2006 Coach Revalidation In recent years the BHPA has made several major improvements to the way it ensures that Instructors and certain other licence holders are fully current The FSC has now turned its attention to ensuring that all licensed Club Coaches and Senior Coaches are also fully current and active This should minimise the chances of any accidents occurring during coaching activity and it should help minimise the legal exposure of any coach if the worst came to the worst A coach revalidation system has therefore been introduced This simply requires all Club Coaches and Senior Coaches to have a declaration of support signed by the Club s Chief Coach at membership renewal time e g As the licence holder s Chief Coach I can confirm that he she continues to be a valuable active member of the club s coaching team In the unlikely event of the club having no nominated Chief Coach then the club Chairman should sign this The FSC also recommends that coaches should re attend the Coach Course at least every five years to ensure that nothing gets forgotten and that they are fully up to date with current thinking The course fee is reduced by 10 for re attendees At present the BHPA has some 700 licensed Coaches It is quite certain that many of these are completely inactive perhaps having consciously decided to take step back in our more litigious society There is therefore also a box on the membership form for coaches to tick if they
