    postcode to find your nearest BHPA registered school eg enter CF44 if your post code is CF44 1BS Please Select Hang Gliding Paragliding Parascending Paramotoring Powered Hang Gliding Post Code Or view schools location map Buy the BHPA Pilot Handbook Flight theory meteorology basic and advanced flying skills and more Invaluable for post CP pilots Find a club Enter the first part of your postcode to find your nearest BHPA recreational club eg enter CF44 if your post code is CF44 1BS Please Select Hang Gliding Paragliding Parascending Paramotoring Powered Hang Gliding Post Code Hang gliders and paragliders are fully fledged aircraft and as with any aircraft carefully structured professional pilot training is essential if serious accidents are to be avoided So how do I get started Whilst BHPA recreational clubs are always willing to offer advice and encouragement initial instruction should always be undertaken at a BHPA registered school There is no real upper age limit provided you are reasonably fit but by law you must be at least 14 years old before you can attempt solo flight BHPA schools will often set their own higher age limit often around 16 Learning to fly a hang glider or paraglider can be great fun and isn t as daunting as you might think provided you receive professional instruction at a BHPA registered school Although the standard which you will be expected to reach will be the same in every school the actual training programme and methods may vary as they are determined by the type of wing you learn to fly the launch method and the prevailing weather on the day Once you have mastered controlling the glider on the ground which isn t as easy as it looks you will be taught to take off and land correctly Your first flights will be in a straight line only a few feet above the ground If you are learning to fly a hang glider these initial flights will be tethered with the instructor able to control the glider through his tether rope When you show that you can safely and confidently get yourself into the air and down again your instructor will start to progress you to take off points higher up the hill With this extra height you will be able to learn how to turn A few days of practice should see you well on your way to completing the tasks for your Elementary Pilot award You ll also be introduced to a limited amount of flying theory usually fitted in around your practical flying instruction and you ll complete a simple exam paper on the topics covered Acheiving Elementary Pilot award is the first step on the ladder of the BHPA Pilot Rating Scheme Your instructor will sign off your EP and CP tasks as your training progresses and will explain how Club Coaches will carry on this function once you have gained your Club Pilot rating left the school and joined your local BHPA recreational club

    Middle Wallop He started flying powered hang gliders when they became legal and now most regularly flies his Doodlebug in Snowdonia He also flies his Airwave Wave paraglider whenever weather and time allow Martin Baxter Sites Officer martin baxter bhpa co uk Dales Club Chairman Martin Baxter didn t run fast enough and found himself elected to the BHPA Exec as Sites Officer Martin is a former Army helicopter pilot with a background in Flight Safety Prior to taking over as Chairman he was a Sites Officer and has some experience of the sensitivities involved in site negotiation and deconfliction and how best to utilise the BHPA s somewhat out of date sites database His first job is to bring it up to date Martin will be providing an update is Skywings in due course but in the meantime if you have any concerns ideas or questions he d be delighted to hear from you Bill Bell Competitions Officer bill bell bhpa co uk Bill Bell is Secretary of the HG Comps panel and deals with Notams and FAI liaison during the competitions Bill has been flying for 25 years and is currently flying Hang gliders on the good days and light aircraft on non XC days with his flying partner Sue Currently a lapsed paraglider pilot because of lack of any obvious ability and because there are not enough good days to do both He is a club coach and one time Airwave dealer which gives him great respect for those earning a living in free flying Bills background is in broadcast TV operations and he has worked for a number of years as a self employed Technical Director Ed Cunliffe SPHG Representative edward cunliffe bhpa co uk Ed was co opted onto BHPA Executive council as Paramotor liaison representative in 2011 and elected onto Exec in 2012 He has been flying for 13 years off and on starting on flexwing microlights in 1996 then switching to paramotors in 1999 and more recently paragliders too Ed is a founder member of the BHPA registered Yorkshire Owls Paramotor Club in which he holds the Finance Officer post and has recently been appointed as a club coach He is also a new member of the Sir George Cayley Sailwing Club and is busy learning the intricacies of unpowered flight An occasional competition pilot Ed is also on the PPG Comps advisory panel In his non flying life Ed has a background in IT though he managed to escape the office and hankering for the high life switched to tower crane driving for three years With little crane work around he has recently switched careers again and is rapidly becoming an amateur accountant as he starts to take over the financial side of the family business Paul Dancey Publications Web Site paul dancey bhpa co uk Paul was first elected to the BHPA Executive Council in 1998 and as Director of Corporate Communications is responsible for the day to day management of
