Paris Pans Olympia Live Album Although arrangements have not yet been finalised it is thought that the Live album which was destined for release in America only will now be brought out in Britain also The estimated time of release is Christmas The tracks on this album will be as follows not in order Crazy City Medicine Man Rock n Roll Star World Goes On Child of The Universe Polk Street Rag Mockingbird For No One Hymn For The Children One Night Jonathan Suicide Hymn Withdrawn After having been out for about a month the single Hymn was withdrawn by the band in favour of release nearer Christmas Although local commercial radio stations were giving the record a lot of support the B B C would not play it on the grounds that it was too Christmassy for the time of year The band therefore wish to thank all those who supported them by buying the single but feel that it is necessary to concede defeat to the B B C who have so much effect on the destiny of any record by rescheduling Hymn for re release nearer Christmas Tee Shirts A lot of you have already bought your F O B J H tee shirts and your support is greatly appreciated Obviously at some time when the funds have recovered from the outlay on these it will be possible for me to order further shirts featuring a different design Therefore it would help me to know what sort of thing most of you would appreciate One member has suggested that the tee shirt should sport a transfer of the band playing live Another suggestion is to use the swallow initials design from the sleeve of Gone To Earth At the end of this newsletter you will find a questionnaire on which one of the questions concerns tee shirts I would appreciate it very much if you would complete this form and send it back next time you write or order something In this way I can get an idea of the sort of things you d like and adjust accordingly Old Programmes I have just discovered a pile of programmes from the Octoberon and Time Honoured Ghosts tours If you would like one or more for cutting up or just keeping please send 2Op for one or 30p for two to cover post and packing and they shall be yours For European members price will be 4Op for one or 45p for two Old Singles I have had a great many letters asking if it is possible for me to obtain the bands past singles and Early Morning Onwards I m afraid I cannot do this When a record is deleted the record company destroys all the copies it holds The only way that you will then be able to get hold of it is through a second hand record dealer personal advertising or from a shop which still holds some copies of the record i e by

it has been decided to change the track listing to include the newer material played on the Gone To Earth Tour The new tracks were recorded live in Europe The album now plays as follows Side One Introduction Child of the Universe Rock n Roll Star Poor Man s Moody Blues Side Two Mockingbird Hard Hearted Woman One Night Side Three Taking Me Higher Suicide Crazy City Jonathan Side Four For No one Polk Street Rag Hymn A Letter from the Band If you can imagine living in a void a vacuum a self contained travelling show catching only glimpses of airports hotels gigs and brief encounters with foreign landscapes and their people where days and dates are controlled by whatever currency and language you are using and even which airline you are on then you have some idea of what a European Tour is all about Once you have achieved some sort of equilibrium you can eventually begin to take note of performances crowd reaction and all the many nuances that make this European Tour a success Naturally we always tend to catergorise our European audiences into neat compartments usually comparing them to their British counterparts but even we came unstuck From the first gig which was in Amsterdam it became apparent that we had underestimated our popularity and we found time and time again that we had unfortunately to turn people away because the theatres were full to capacity It had been some time since our last tour of Europe and we naturally assumed we would have to start at square one But we were pleasantly surprised especially by the reaction in Germany and Switzerland Another yardstick to success is the increase or decrease of album sales Before playing Zurich our sales of Gone To Earth were circa 4 000 copies a Big album is 12 000 and following the One date we had sold 7 000 copies and were No 9 in the Swiss charts Add to this our being No 29 in the German charts and you have a more plausible thermometer of how successful the Tour was Jolly good eh Finally we would like to extend our thanks and felicitations to all Friends of Barclay James Harvest for making 1977 an exceptional year for us Consolidate in 1978 Regards Woolly Les Mel and John Lyrics From now on I plan to print the lyrics of one song in every newsletter so that you can gradually build a collection of those words which are not printed on the album sleeves From time to time I do receive requests for lyrics and one song that seems to cause problems perhaps because of its local content is Mill Boys Well it s as good a place to start as any Mill Boys Sky was black Lord Rain came pouring down No 12 bus shuffling down Shaw Road Way Mules keep spinning Black faced lifers peck the ground Sun comes up like lightning over Tandle Hills grey Chorus We

showed me that 150 members would prefer a competition to a Prize Draw and considering that the membership has increased since then I was expecting at least this many entries Instead there were only 85 and I had to seriously consider withdrawing the first prize as the entry fees might not cover the cost Anyway chiding aside I will now tell you the correct answers to the quiz and then let you know the names of the lucky winners 1 One Barclay James Harvest album was available in SQ Ouadrophonic Name this album ONCE AGAIN 2 In his song Sea of Tranquility Woolly quotes from two of his previous compositions Which songs do the quotations come from RA BEYOND THE GRAVE 3 One of Barclay James Harvest s albums has been available in two quite different sleeves Which is it EARLY MORNING ONWARDS 4 Excluding themselves how many producers or co producers have the band used over the years FIVE Norman Smith Wally Allen Roger Bain Elliot Mazer and Davie Rohl The Winners Before I name names I thought I d better let you know how the competition was judged so that you can be sure that it was entirely fair Firstly I sorted the entries into correct and incorrect and then presented the band with a list of title suggestions from all those who gave the right answers so that they could decide the final winners No details which may have influenced their decision such as names addresses etc were given to them Where a member sent in more than one suggestion the lads were instructed to chose only one title from the group so that no unfair advantage was given First Prize of an expenses paid visit to the band while they are recording at Strawberry Studios in Stockport went to Roland Mansell Member No 304 from Camberley Surrey whose suggestion for a title for the next studio album was True Sanctuary I will be arranging the details of this visit with Roland and the band The title Timeless Flight won Malcolm Kerr Member No 93 from Bloxham Oxfordshire the Second Prize of an autographed copy of the album Live Tapes as soon as it is released The Third Prize of a pair of autographed drumsticks were won by Colin Dixon Member No 33 from Shinfield Reading His suggestion was Majestic Journey Fourth Prize the 1977 World Tour Artiste sweat shirt went to Andy Renwick Member No 47 from Whiteinch Glasgow whose suggestion was Certificate Fifth and Sixth Prizes of Surprise Packages were won by Rob Hancock Member No 142 from Runcorn Cheshire with the title Rural Mystique and Alison Scott Member No 363 from Garelochhead Dumbartonshire with the title For All Eternity For those of you who are curious about the contents of the mysterious Surprise Packages I will explain Each consists of one Gone to Earth presentation pack one Gone to Earth poster one Time Honoured Ghosts poster one 12 diameter Gone to Earth window sticker one winged lady sticker one autographed photo card and a couple of Time Honoured Ghosts time biographies All this is presented in a 12 x 12 Time Honoured Ghosts box ideal for cosseting any Barclay James Harvest record collection N B These are one off items many of which were only available as publicity material which was never on sale so please don t write and ask for any of the things mentioned as I cannot get them for you Two extra prizes of copies of the next single to be released will be sent to Chive Gawthorpe and Linda Brook whose entries were highly recommended The Fifth Man Apart from the band themselves the most familiar face at any Barclay James Harvest concert must be Ian Southerington s Ian has been the band s soundman his own description for just over seven years now and he estimates that he has engineered at five hundred gigs Of course things have changed rather a hot since he started and the simplistic equipment that he used when he mixed his first gig is a far cry from the complicated mixing desk he now manipulates so expertly Ian s debut as a sound engineer came while he was still working as a booker for the Manchester agency who then handled Barclay James Harvest Disaster struck when the band s original engineer quit during an afternoon performance in The Way In at Kendals in Manchester Ian took his place for the rest of the set and also filled in for him that evening at Didsbury College of Education One week later he was mixing a concert with the orchestra at Maidstone He learned as he went along there was nothing else he could do in such a situation Ian has not always been connected with the music business and at one time was a fully qualified chef whose positions included cooking for an Austrian property magnate on his yacht during a Mediterranean cruise and working at the Piccadilly Hotel Manchester Well I suppose it s all mixing of one sort or another When the Barclays are not using their equipment Ian is in charge of hiring it out to other acts which means that he sees quite a variety of performances The band s P A has been used by Caravan The Four Tops Max Boyce Gene Pitney Little and Large Harry Chapin The Three Degrees and Sad Café to name a few so if you ve ever wondered what happens to all that gear when the band aren t rehearsing or touring you now have the answer Earlier I mentioned that the equipment has changed considerably over the years so it may be of interest to you to know that the original P A was a 400 Watt Wem system Whilst on the subject of the band s equipment I may as well take this opportunity to update the information given in the equipment list Additions 6 1 x 15 bass bins 4

YOU GET ME A BACK STAGE PASS The answer is a straight no These passes are reserved for crew managers personal friends or relatives of the band and the band themselves The main reason for this is that they allow access back stage at any time and the lads couldn t possibly be expected to give a good performance if they were not left in private to prepare in their own way After the gig is the time set aside for their supporters CAN YOU GET TICKETS FOR ME Again the answer is no I have no special access to tickets and very often don t get one at all and end up standing Even Kennedy Street Enterprises the management are not directly concerned with the allocation of tickets This is a matter for ticket agencies and the halls themselves Sorry As usual I will be get along to as many of the gigs as I can Definites at the moment are both Hammersmith shows both Manchester performances and Brighton although I can t be certain where else I may turn up If you want to see me to ask questions let me know your ticket numbers when you receive them and I will come and find you if I m around I hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting some more members this year as it s always nice to get to know you better Live Tapes at last Live Tapes the new live double album was finally released in June I must apologise to those of you who made frequent and fruitless trips to the record shop to buy it during April and May Although it was originally scheduled for release in April as stated in the last newsletter it was delayed by a difficulty with the printing of the sleeve Rather than let it go out with a badly printed sleeve which was largely designed by the band themselves incidentally the lads stopped the album on several occasions and ordered the cover to be reprinted The Live Tapes posters suffered from the same delay but I trust that you have now received any that you ordered More News of B J H Film The documentary film first referred to in the January newsletter seems to be suffering some set backs in this country As you know it was to have been shown in cinemas around the country as a support for a major film Since then it has been suggested that it be paired with such films as David Soul s latest epic l and since it is considered doubtful that the audiences of both films would overlap in their tastes it has been decided to give the big screen a miss until a more suitable feature comes along In the meantime though the documentary has been enjoying some success abroad It has already been shown in Belgium and has been shown on local T V in Germany It is now planned to put it out on national T V in Germany within the next two months On the brighter side for fans in the U K it is probable that Yorkshire T V will be buying the film and it will be put out through the A T V distribution network in about September I will keep listening for more news and hope I will have more to report in October Prizewinner s Visit to Strawberry Studios Knowing that many of you would be interested in a more personal account of what life at the studio is like Roland Mansell and his girlfriend Tracey who accompanied him on his visit to Strawberry Studios have composed this account of their day You will remember that Roland won this expenses paid visit in the club competition Wednesday 10th May 1978 Our visit to Strawberry Studios began at 5 30 a m when we arose to prepare for our journey After a slight delay we finally left Camberley at 6 50 a m and arrived at Stockport at 12 30 p m Feeling rather parched we decided to try and find a pub to have a cool long pint of lager and some grub Our thirst quenched and our stomachs full we made our way back to the station where we were to meet Jill and Woolly at 1 30 p m As usual I Tracey was left to mind the bags and albums whilst Roland went to find the Gents While he was gone Jill and Woolly arrived and I had to explain away his long absence I was easily recognised by Jill and Woolly because we had told them we would be wearing our B J H sweatshirts Roland arrived introduced himself and then we made our way to the studios to meet the rest of the band When we arrived parched as usual it was so hot that day we were shown to the basement hospitality suite which was very comfortably furnished The room contained a kitchen a sitting area pool table dart board television and a stereo system which can be connected to the studio upstairs After having a cup of tea we went upstairs to the control room to meet the rest of the band and the fifth man Ian Southerington along with Dave the co producer and Chris his assistant Woolly introduced them to us as You know everyone here I Roland knew everyone but Tracey took some time to work out who was who as they look different from their photographs After listening to part of an unfinished track Mel went into the studio to overdub some percussion Some of the sounds produced sounded remarkably like a bullfrog a cat and a crocodile yawning as Dave put them through various effects units and then he achieved the required sound The track they were working on that day was one of John s Jill and Woolly showed us round the recording studio itself which contained various sound traps for different instruments
