gonna stay Looking from the outside I might as well fall I might as well drift away I might as well fall It seems there is no other way Looking from the outside Looking from the outside Looking for the inside of you If I say that I like your song Will you say that you played it wrong Or that maybe I stayed too long Looking from the outside If I say that you re out of line Will you say that I m wasting time Cos it s making me feel that I m Looking from the outside I might as well fall I might as well drift away I might as well fall It seems there is no other way Looking from the outside Looking from the outside Looking for the inside of you Les Holroyd BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd Teenage Heart John revisits his youth with this tale of post pubescent passion for his own Lolita Lyrics It s the truth or so they say Who holds her hand holds her heart She s old enough to play fast and loose In a schoolgirl kind of way But this teenage heart s driving me insane The moment that we touch will ease my pain Who holds her hand holds her heart So they say Finding words finding the nerve But never finding her alone My heart s like sand she holds in her hands One look one smile and I d be there But this teenage heart s driving me insane The moment that we touch will ease my pain Who holds her hand holds her heart So they say Say what she said Is she going out Or is it me she ll see tonight Tell me the truth I m man enough Well in a schoolboy kind of way But this teenage heart s driving me insane The moment that we touch will ease my pain Who holds her hand holds her heart So they say John Lees St Annes Music High Wire There s a real drive to this song as Les tackles a relationship where the protagonist is badly treated and predicts that his lover will come to a bad end but can t resist coming back for more Lyrics I have seen and I have heard The story s all the same Running here and running there Your love is like a game Everytime I look for you You re walking in the clouds When I look into your eyes I see you looking down You ve got something that I want You ve got something that I need If there s a chance that I can see I will follow where you lead me High wire walking on a high wire You re walkin on a high wire You re walkin tall But you know you re gonna fall someday I have seen and I have heard That you ve been fooling me You could try to make me feel The way I used to be Is there any reason why You leave me on the shore When I look into your eyes It makes me beg for more You ve got something that I want You ve got something that I need If there s a chance that I can see I will follow where you lead me High wire walking on a high wire You re walkin on a high wire You re walkin tall But you know you re gonna fall from your Les Holroyd BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd Midnight Drug The contrast between the natural highs of love and the artificiality of chemically induced pleasure is not a new subject for John cf Hymn but this song is more personal It was written about a particular friend who was as John saw it wasting his money and destroying his life with drink drugs and promiscuity The message does not come across as smug or patronising though but with genuine concern Lyrics I get up early in the morning It s up and out with the sun Spending my days making natural highs And in the evening when my work is done I make a phone call from the hotel Speak to my woman each day I tell my lady that I m missing her And I hope she feels the same At least she knows that I m not Sharing out our love With the midnight drug You spend your day in an in joke Pouring your life in a glass of ice And no one s laughing but the monkey in you Paranoia for the highest price You make a phone call from the hotel Spending your life in the night The kind of women who don t come for free But then I guess they know you ll pay the price If they can keep you up They know you ve got what turns them on The midnight drug How many times must we tell you Just how much we care You must know how we love you But we can t even meet half way Well I ve got something to tell you If you can only take it in I think you re worthy of a better cause If you can just stop looking for What you never get enough of The midnight drug Your kind of sugar is a sweet club I like my sugar in tea You spend your life going faster There s no surviving when you crash at speed Now I m not saying that I m wrong or right But that the truth is plain to see I get my kicks from my friends and their love It s the kind of love that comes for free They re the kind of friends That you don t find when you go looking for They only pick you up then let you fall Till you come back for more Of the midnight drug John Lees BJH

Woman Not as some fans suggested a critique of Margaret Thatcher although some of the lines could well apply The subject was actually Mother Russia in the days before glasnost and perestroika and the collapse of the Communist system and the song was written after the shooting down of a Korean airliner Lyrics They say that hell hath no fury A fact that I can t deny I see the victims of circumstance Convicted without a crime Call it aggressive behaviour Call it the need to be free Call it the cry of the innocent That no one can believe Rebel rebel woman I know you well Rebel rebel woman I know you well They say there s truth in the old truths No reason to cheat or lie We re caught in the crossfire Convicted without a trial This mother s scorn is a strange thing She pays her children for love She heeds the cry of their innocence They pay her with their blood Rebel rebel woman I know you well Rebel rebel woman I know you well They say that hell hath no fury A fact that I can t deny I see the victims of circumstance Convicted without a crime Another plane in the ocean Another wall in the sky The victims of circumstance Convicted without a trial Rebel rebel woman I know you well Rebel rebel woman I know you well John Lees BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd Say You ll Stay An escapist love song from Les evoking a dream world of romantic fantasy The song also contains quite a barb with a side swipe against the little people who tell him what to do Back to the band s critics perhaps Lyrics Dreams and castles We build them constantly Who will see what we ve done Thoughts that follow me Fools of destiny This is what we ve become Say you ll stay with me I just want to be Here with you Say you ll stay with me I just want to be here Taking chances with Time that passes us Who can tell what will be Words that call to me Eyes that try to see Make it all mystery Say you ll stay with me I just want to be Here with you Say you ll stay with me I just want to be here Can you hear those little people Tell me what to do They cannot see there s no tomorrow But for me and you Say you ll stay with me I just want to be here Les Holroyd BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd For Your Love Not a conventional love song in fact but a direct message to the fans from John Light up the flame of love is intended not only in the metaphorical sense but also refers to live audiences habit of waving lighted matches and cigarette lighters A torch song Lyrics For your love I cry The long lonely hours Before the dawn

easy the gun No talk no thought just shoot and run Our children wake to the bomb and the bodysearch Why why why We fill their ears with the drums and the battle cries Why why why They burn your car when you stray it s a game they play Why why why They re fed on hate it s a circle we don t want to break Why why why Cheap the bullet easy the gun Sons and daughters lost and gone Cheap the bullet easy the gun No talk no thought just shoot and run I m baptised in your prejudice I m confirmed with your hate I m ordained into violence I m a child of the modern world Of the media world Of the TV world Of the modern world Cheap the bullet easy the gun Sons and daughters lost and gone Cheap the bullet easy the gun No talk no thought just shoot and run John Lees BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd Welcome To The Show This song was chosen as the first single in Germany Les has often said that for him the lyrics are secondary to the melody but here he excels himself with some acid reflections on the superficiality of the music business and current attitudes in general Les also played the Dire Straits ish guitar at the end The song was heavily played by German radio and although it didn t chart certainly helped the album to do so Lyrics We can t all be right We can t all be wrong It s a long journey We travel on Gypsies of the night Riders of the storm Though it s heartbreaking We must go on Wrong place Wrong face Somewhere on the road Keep playing And saying Welcome to the show Those who laugh the first Must cry later they say As the stage curtain Brings on the girls And they surely do well For the politicians who sell them On TV today Makes me uncertain Of who runs the world Wrong place Wrong face Somewhere on the road Keep playing And saying Welcome to the show My friends all the trends that have gone Are as one in the minds of today With their eyes open they can t see the signs And the moment belongs to the video songs Leading nowhere at all And the fools talking the blind lead the blind Wrong place Wrong face Somewhere on the road Keep playing And saying Welcome to the show We started something Now we can t get away from it all Les Holroyd BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd John Lennon s Guitar This song was based on an incident which occurred whilst BJH were recording Galadriel for the Once Again album at EMI s Abbey Road Studios when Norman Smith got one of John Lennon s guitars out of a cupboard where it had been left after a recording session at the studio Lennon was one of John Lees heroes so our John was delighted to have the chance to play the blond Epiphone guitar Lyrics Back in the autumn of seventy On the night shift at Abbey Road Four young men were recording a song named Galadriel For an album they d call Once Again The producer was Norman Smith Who d engineered with The Beatles and John Whose guitar was to be instrumental that day When I came to play I remember it well as if it was yesterday The day that I played John Lennon s guitar I remember it well as if it was yesterday The day that I played John Lennon s guitar Back in the autumn of seventy As I played on my borrowed guitar How could I know The Beatles would split the next day My heroes break up and go their own way Now autumns they came and they go But my friends and my memories remain And my heroes well some of them fell from the stage But their light still remains I remember it well as if it was yesterday The day that I played John Lennon s guitar I remember it well as if it was yesterday The day that I played John Lennon s guitar I remember the day I remember the day I remember the day I remember the day The day that I played John Lennon s guitar I remember the day as if it was yesterday And I know that the memories will never fade I remember the day as if it was yesterday The day that I played John Lennon s guitar John Lees BJH Ltd Handle Music Ltd Halfway To Freedom Les s anthem to the people of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc proved prophetic because between the song being written and the album being released events had overtaken everyone and the Berlin Wall had been breached In the album s sleeve notes Les dedicated the song to the people of Germany and the song was later showcased at a TV show called Guten Abend Deutschland good evening Germany recorded in East Berlin and broadcast live across East and West Germany the first time this had happened since the division of Germany Lyrics You got to sing a new song Cause the way that we re going Is far too long Alone when you can t hear a sound And you re halfway to freedom It can t be found But we ve got the love And the feeling s strong And we re going on And we can t go wrong Halfway to freedom Sing out the word Tables are turning We re learning Our voice can be heard Towers are falling See how they burn Hope for each other Our brothers All over the world Love like a cry in the night We reach out for each other Peace to find Hear when the bells start to chime And you re halfway to freedom It s hard to

long and many things in life are wrong The lark is carolling his song in this the month of May No sign of raven or of crow to make our blue sky grey The blackbird singing far below reminds us where we stay Back where the grimy rivers flow through all our toil and fray Then leaning on the factory wall answering Mammon s trumpet call Just like the lark our rise and fall still happens come what may Wolstenholme 2005 Musica Realis Ltd That s The Price You Pay Lyrics It s hard I know Sometimes we build our hopes too high Joy can turn to sorrow In the twinkle of an eye That s the price you pay For falling Long for yesterday For the lessons you learn That s the price you pay Listen to me For I have travelled down that road In a little while you ll see The truth in what I ve told That s the price you pay For falling But it s all in the game For the lessons you learn That s the price you pay Many a heart has been broken Many a tear has to fall These are the costs when you give your all But that s the price you pay It s hard letting go But it gets easier in time Maybe not tomorrow One day by and by That s the price you pay For falling So don t wish your life away For the lessons you learn That s the price you pay Turner 2005 Musica Realis Ltd The Iceman Cometh III The Cone Of Evil Lyrics Mr Softy Mr Whippee They ll be gone if you re not nippy Lurking there on your street corner Thought I d be the first to warn ya Kind of nice but kind of scary Lay a trap for those unwary What goes on inside the dairy But hey It s a lovely sunny day We can lick our wounds away Let the cornets blow But the voices still say No Mr Snot and Mr Toupee not their names it s what the kids say Drive their vans except on Mondays Sell their wares including sundaes Kind of nice but kind of shifty Lay a trap for those unthrifty 99s for one Pound fifty But hey It s a lovely sunny day We can lick our wounds away Let the cornets blow But the voices still say No Wolstenholme 2005 Musica Realis Ltd Hebden Bridge Lyrics Hebden Bridge late summer morning As people wake rubbing their eyes Shops astir they fan their awnings For rain is in those lowering skies Hebden Bridge nothing is different Fruit and flowers paper and pie Dreams are made here on the pavement Dreams are made hoping to fly Climbing where the winds are blowing Streets and houses out of sight Any moment we ll be going We re just waiting til the time is right High above the tallest spires Way
