    Featured Features Competitions Gates of Video Hell Haiku Review Interviews Short Films Weekend of Trash Home Reviews Book Reviews Film Reviews Game Reviews Short Films Soundtrack Reviews TV Reviews Podcasts Blueprint Review Spoiler Podcast Features Competitions Gates of Video Hell Haiku Review Interviews Short Films Weekend of Trash Home Reviews Trapped Brian Runciman April 25 2016 Reviews TV Reviews Director Baltasar Kormákur Baldvin Z Börkur Sigthorsson Óska r Thor Axelsson Written by Sigurjón Kjartansson Clive Bradley Starring Olafur Darri Olafsson Ingvar Sigurosson Nina Dogg Filipusdottir Year 2015 Duration 10 episodes 52 minutes each Country Iceland BBFC Certification 15 Being a big fan of the Scandi noir genre I was looking forward to seeing this but of course I don t want to be seen as prejudicial It s difficult though when all the tropes new as they are are in place almost from the off dark imagery washed out interior scenes emotional complexity a tension between large scale unpleasantness in society and the minutiae of everyday life in properly rounded characters Check check check check and check The title as one would expect has multiple layers of meaning Initially the passengers of a ferry harking from Copenhagen hence the presence as a shady captain of Bjarne Henriksen from the Killing are all restricted to the ship after it comes into our Icelandic port pretty much bobbing alongside a fresh torso In the first few episodes odd things occur as is so often the way in a Scandi drama not on the large scale but just slightly off the beat If you weren t paying attention you would miss small sign posts which adds to the richness of the story and are slowly revealed over the ten episodes And there is no sticking with super handsome leads in Trapped either Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the skilled yet slightly cavalier and perhaps a bit haphazard chief of police in this tiny outpost why is he there we wonder is in no way handsome his six pack being very much hidden for a number of years Likewise his two cohorts look and behave like real people The first villain very much an introductory baddie is a Lithuanian mobster If I had one criticism it would be his rather cartoon like appearance and behaviour But there is more at stake the larger issue in this drama is around the potential for huge Chinese investment to make the small village a super harbour in the East West sea routes between China and the US Another strand is what kicks of the whole situation a mysterious fire which claims the life of a young woman related to a number of the protagonists and the reappearance on the ferry of the surviving boyfriend Cue misunderstandings and some traumatic but well acted scenes If you are looking for a whizz bang adventure filled action series this is not it Plus why are you reading a review of a Scandi drama But for a combination of though provoking emotional

    Izzi Isman Aridh Tritama Producer Sheila Timothy Country Indonesia Running Time 87 min Year 2016 BBFC Certificate TBC Centre Parcs meets the Mutilator in a delightfully sordid amnesia survival petualangan Hang on is that David Attenborough leaping through the undergrowth in search of gorillas am I watching National Geographic footage No it s some guy with no contacts on his mobile who can t remember his name and has decided the best course of action is to career through the woods screaming frantically for help Ah it looks like he s okay I think he s in Centre Parcs he s found a delightful log cabin and it even has a nice shiny get away car parked on the drive Err my mistake everything is not alright it s not such an agreeable cabin in the wood There s a video camera inside with a press play note attached and a very nasty video to watch Horror stricken by the sickening snuff recording on offer he s off hurtling across the wood in a blind panic Now he s found his wallet with a few clues to his identity discovering his name is John Evans Rio Dewanto maybe this will calm his shredded nerves No once again he decides the best plan is to hurtle about panicking throwing up and to finish off whacks his head on a tree before ending up back at the cabin in the forest On returning to the loathsome lodge John has the brilliant idea of hiding in a wooden trunk so that he can be locked in and set on fire by an unknown assailant Well he manages to escape and is soon bounding about in the woods again with no particular place to go This time John is armed with a lantern so he can be easily spotted and there s a maniac on the loose lurking in the vegetation and trying their very best to dispatch John Adding to the mystery a couple of kids are hiding out in the undergrowth are they his kids We realise a dead woman in the house of horrors is his wife when he covers her lifeless body in a blanket He finds a recording and discovers he was on holiday with his family in the lodge meanwhile John s unknown assailant is closing in for the kill The mad man stalks him shooting him with an arrow amidst much screaming John pulls the arrow from his arm finally he has been pushed too far John s scampers around waving his give away lantern and eventually decides to fight back but all he manages to do is to impale his own daughter and machete his son in the neck Distraught John finds a beeping alarm clock buried in the earth and uncovers a dead man with Go back to the beginning cut into his chest John goes back and digs in the grave he woke up in to find a box with The truth written on
