to Blackpool to undergo further tests although it has not yet commenced these It may be remembered that when it was known as Roadliner back in the late 1990s the tram was in Blackpool undergoing tests Since this date the tram has spent some time at Carnforth by the West Coast Main Line and has been repainted into a Dark Green and Yellow version of the Blackpool Transport Metro Coastlines livery style Congratulations to the tram which becomes the fourth tram to hold the accolade and only the second to do so on its own In 2003 the award went to Leeds 602 whilst 2004 saw joint winners in Blackpool Frigate 736 and NET 203 A huge thanks to all those who voted this year as well over 125 more votes were received this year than last and has assured that I will continue with the contest in 2006 as well The Nominees Blackpool Vambac 11 Having spent many long years out of service undergoing a restoration this tram was finally returned to service at the East Anglian Transport Museum near Lowestoft The tram was officially launched into service during at Easter 2005 and has become a regular member of the operating fleet at the Museum Final Position Second Leeds 345 Another tram which has been out of service for years is this one Leeds 345 The tram has not yet returned to service but was the most popular tram in the nominations so there was no option but to put it on the shortlist 2006 should be the big year when 345 is returned to service at the Crich Tramway Village this having been delayed from September this year It is currently undergoing a rigourous testing programme Final Position Third Trampower Tram Having spent a number of years out

Tramway Society to help Blackpool tram projects at the Crich Tramway Village and this was the first such project of that After extensive work the tram was readied for a relaunch at the Enthusiasts Day in September Despite the inclement weather on the day the tram proved to be a success and has performed on the odd occasion since faultlessly Final Position Joint Third Blackpool Boat 600 This is the one nomination that really caused a lot of problematic thinking There were three major possibilities for the fourth and final nomination 600 Balloon 700 and Open Top Balloon 706 All of them were of course stars at the 70th Anniversary Celebrations at the start of September in Blackpool and all have been key servants for the Blackpool Tramway in all those years 700 was a big contender as it had also performed a lot on the Fleetwood service earlier in 2004 as it had high intensity headlights However 600 got the final nod for a varity of reasons Firstly it is looking likely that the tram is to be stored for 2005 with the huge downsizing of the tram fleet Secondly I like the Boats Finally and another really selfish reason I was on 600 as it was running on the Prom on 11 September on specials after the procession The heavans absolutely opened and the tram was terminated short at Manchester Square and went to depot Little did I know then that that was its final journey I knew there was a reason I got absolutely soaked Final Position Joint Third Blackpool Illuminated Frigate 736 This tram was always going to be popular amongst people for the 2004 award as it re entered service following a major overhaul and rebuild The tram last ran in 2001 when it had

needs little introduction having been the star of the February 2003 Channel 4 program Salvage Squad The tram was restored with help from the program and put into working order for the first time in many years since its withdrawal Since then the tram has seen repairs to the Vambac unit which was never fully operational for Channel 4 and it has also done further filming work for an encore It has also undertaken a Lancastrian Transport Trust tour to show its worth Final Position Second Blackpool Twin Car 672 682 672 682 were the first trams in the Blackpool fleet to receive the Metro Coastlines style of livery when they were painted in Orange and Yellow back in February The tram also received an overhaul and was installed with saloon heaters so that it could be used all year round The reason for the tram being put into the competition is that the pair of them started a new era for the Twin Cars and possibly even the Blackpool Tramway Final Position Third Leeds 602 The star of the Crich Tramway Village Tramathon 2003 was Leeds 602 The tram had spent a number of years out of service due to a leaky roof but in time for June 2003 the crews at Crich were put through their paces on the tram and it was without doubt the star for the Tramathon The tram was at the time the only Vambac operated tramcar operational in the UK Final Position Winner Nottingham Express Transit 208 The only second generation tram in the list is NET 208 which was the first tram into the city centre twice 208 entered the city centre for both the first and the official first runs and as such has provided history Final Position Fourth Stockport 5

  • British Trams Online - Comment
season now over we can draw a line over a dark period in the Blackpool Tramway with trackwork likely to commence in January on sections not yet treated between Thornton Gate and Fleetwood But there is always a but isn t there this is still not a guarantee that double deck trams will be able to go the full distance As they say watch this space for details of whether things improve for next year Elsewhere in the tram and light rail world we now have a further delay on the opening of Nottingham Express Transit As we are aware the system was originally scheduled for a 11 November opening and then we heard the opening would be delayed for 4 8 weeks due to a derailment causing a delay in testing Now the latest from the East Midlands city is that further delays have meant that the opening is now not likely until the early spring with March and April currently being mentioned The reasons for the delay in the opening this time have been widely mentioned elsewhere on this site and on the internet as a whole so there is no need to go into those here Suffice to say the training and testing program is now only really getting into full swing and as such the full timetable without passengers has not yet commenced The latest press release from NET stated that this should commence within the next few weeks and when it does we will be getting closer to the start date for the UK s latest entrant into the light rail market Personally I don t think we should get too carried away over this latest delay for NET as we have seen it happen on numerous occasions on other UK systems In fact very few things on a scale this size to open on their original schedule and it is better that everything is just right for the opening as if its want you can be sure that the antis would be out in force not that there aren t already saying what a bad thing this evil tram is The opening of NET is now even more eagerly waited and of course British Trams Online will have features on the system in the run up to the opening We are still looking to find someone who would be willing to write a short piece on the day of the opening whenever it might be for publication on the site If you are interested and willing please email us at the usual address Elsewhere in the country there is a growing frustration from many quarters over the stance of the government on light rail Blackpool has now been waiting around 2 years to hear about their application for funding to upgrade and extend the tramway with state of the art light rail vehicles has and as such they are starting to wonder whether the package will be approved by Whitehall Both Leeds and South
