It is an exciting time of year for ducks The leaves are off the trees so we have a better view of all the birds flying by and like to quack at them Caroline thinks we have been a bit noisy recently I think it is our age and the fact that we are busy trying to attract mates at this time of year Poor Marge Man has a limp

amazing what damage eleven beaks can do So much fun I hope you enjoy the festive portrait I had done above of me right and my Californian ducky friend Mallory We are all hoping that 2004 brings better health for Caroline but who can regret a year in which so many good friends were made and indeed hatched Well everyone in Duck Garden wishes you a very Merry Christmas and

a duck Caroline and David came to my rescue Click here to read the full story Well after all that drama you d think that the weekly human chores such as changing our straw and cleaning and refilling the ponds would pass without incident Not this month On one pond day when Caroline had pulled the plug the night before she came up the next morning to find a new resident It was a little mouse accompanied by a large raw sausage which it seemed to have dragged into the empty pond overnight Crazy goings on indeed Thursday 27th May Hello everyone Sheldon here and I am back to my usual cheeky self now After my egg bound crisis it took me a month or so to feel really happy again I got very scaredy and spent weeks hiding in the shrubbery during the day time I was a bit broody for a while too but now I just lay my egg each day and let Caroline collect it from the run Just when I was getting back to my old self BQ decided to give Caroline a fright One evening David noticed she was blinking far more than normal and on investigating they discovered she had damaged her eye A couple of days later it was looking worse so Liz and Caroline took her to the vet Her eye was red and sore looking and the vet said she had torn her third eyelid She was given antibiotic ointment to prevent infection although she didn t seem very grateful twice a day when they caught her to administer it A week or so later it is almost completely healed What a relief Of course there is never a dull moment here and the latest problem involves Titchy who keeps getting egg bound and has so far laid three soft shelled eggs I am sure she will manage a proper egg soon We have had a glorious month of sunshine and I am having so much fun on the main patio down beside the house Diddy has finally accepted me more and lets me hang out with him and Titchy I have also had a few chats with Caroline I made her day yesterday by chattering to her and letting her stroke me June Hello everyone June started with sunshine and Diddy and I helped Caroline and her Mum plant up the patio pots We had a wonderful time eating all the slugs from the bottom of the pots as they emptied the bulbs and replaced them with summer flowering plants Titchy finally laid her first proper hard shelled eggs this month Soon she was laying whole clutches of them Her nests were the funniest any of us had ever seen though The first was in a tiny indentation in the soil in the main border not even hidden Next she tried using the oregano plant just outside the back door but she gave this one away by hissing every

em By the end of April there was another problem Titchy was egg bound again and had to have two warm baths Caroline and David did the first late one night and the second was given by Chendy as you can see from the picture below How far she has come from her days of not liking us as ducklings to holding a poorly duck for its bath I had to have a warm bath too but recovered quickly after laying just one soft shelled egg I hope you enjoy the photo of baby Jess above Unbelievably Caroline didn t take a single photo of me this month May Lucky Duckies Hello again I have now settled in well to life in the top Duck Garden with my parents after being isolated from Diddy and Titch due to my bullying tendencies We are being well looked after as usual by David who does the daily chores Martin who comes every Friday to clean our ponds and Chen who is in charge of changing our straw beds each week Occasionally we even see Caroline and Jess One day they spent some time up here and when Aunty Liz popped round baby Jess had her first ever fit of giggles right here in Duck Garden Pictured above this month are Marty Bruiser Marge Man and little D June In the Brownies Well June already and we girls are still laying lots of eggs We take great delight in finding new spots for nests and making our humans play Hunt the Duck Twice Caroline has been woken at 5 am by ducks who having spent the night on a nest have decided that when the sun comes up it is time to quack VERY loudly and find their ducky friends who of course are tucked up in their beds Another naughty moment was when the main garden ducks found that the gate onto the drive had been left open Of course it was too tempting an opportunity to miss and they ventured through it Luckily they found a flower bed of tasty slugs and grubs and were discovered before heading out onto the road The highlight of the month for me was a visit to the 1st Oreston Brownies with Caroline and David We were guest speakers and gave a talk on ducks See me pictured above with my Brownie cap Well one I borrowed I was the surprise finale so I spent most of the night in the store room but I enjoyed meeting the Brownies and behaved myself while they stroked me July Feathers everywhere We started our moult this month as you can see from the photo above where my beautifully coloured wing feathers are missing and of course that meant our hormones settled down too and Diddy and Titch could be freed from their hutch on the patio This month Caroline has been exchanging e mails with a wonderful lady in Leicestershire Helene has runner ducks and her online

up close to us for the first time Caroline s Easter cards had a ducky theme again this year as you can see below May Escapee One day this month all of Jess toddler friends and their mum s came for lunch and someone left the gate open for a little while Caroline noticed and closed it but she didn t realise that someone had escaped That evening Bruiser was missing at bedtime and he couldn t be found anywhere in the garden Luckily Freda a friend from over the road came round soon after to say that they had found a very tame duck in the Avenue opposite Caroline went over with the cat basket and soon caught him and brought him home It was a great relief to us all to have him safely back June Early this month Caroline decided that enough was enough and separated me Titchy and Diddy our drake from the other ducks We already slept separately but during the day we were being attacked by the other males whose hormones were running high as usual at this time of year Instead of staying in Duck Garden David let us through the gate each morning and we had the run of the rest of the garden Caroline and Jess enjoyed seeing more of us and as you can see above we settled right in on the patio by the house with Jess toys And finally for this month I thought you might like to see who else we are sharing the garden with Jess has a habit of telling everyone that there are monkeys in trees so now there are Four cuddly charity shop monkeys have taken up residence in the trees near the house Read about how this came about in Jess new Baby Signing section of the website July At the end of June Caroline s mum Chen celebrated her birthday and one of her presents was two of our ducky friends As you know we struggle here each year during the mating season with too many drakes Well Marge Man and Bruiser have gone to live with Chen and Martin and are having a wonderful time No they don t live in the house but Chen couldn t resist taking a picture of the cheeky pair before shooing them out Below you can see them in their temporary pond but by the end of the month they had AMAZING accommodation consisting of a slate roofed house and long swimming rill August We are Nine Since Marge Man and Bruiser left myself Titch and Diddy have gone back to live in Duck Garden At first we still had to have separate sleeping quarters but now that the moult is well underway and the drakes hormones have quietened down we are all sharing one house at night and hanging round as a nine during the day Hopefully with two drakes gone we can all stay friends next spring too We have had lots
