orange scales now recovered in brown leatherette have moved with Muddy from house to house As a rule I stay as far away from them as possible preferring to determine the success of any weight losing attempts by the rule of thumb method ie whether I can easily move my thumb between me and the band of my trousers As this has been recently revised rule of toothpick other action is required I mentioned a while back we re on the 5 to 2 diet currently going quite well very much looking forward to my 2pm apple but my new favourite toy is a free app off the t internet which basically acts like a food diary so you see your calorie allowance plummet throughout the day in glorious Technicolor now in order to start the process in addition to telling it how much I wanted to lose by when I had to input my height and weight but was struggling to see the worn display on the once orange now brown leatherette apparatus which I have always been led to believe reads a quarter of a stone heavier than one s true weight so decided to upgrade and treat us to a set of all singing all dancing digital scales I shouldn t have bothered I digitally weigh 2 pounds above the inflated old scales reading that s 5 5 pounds more of me than I ever thought possible surely that s like having an extra arm or something The good thing about this app or any food diary really is you get so fed up of writing down all the extra stuff you re eating that you stop bothering to eat it although the cool thing about the computer version is that you tell it exactly what you

what to record with them we holed up at Snap studios in North London for a two day recording experiment I ve always wanted to record a voice and piano record with such an intimate setting there s nowhere to hide and with the vocal mic and the piano being in the same room there s no possibility of repair just like doing a gig A proper old school performance record Although I had a few songs in mind that I definitely wanted to record part of the joy for me was picking songs as we went along a Duke Ellington here a Gershwin there and of course a Cole Porter at the heart of it all A massive highlight was tackling a brand new Tim Rice Stuart Brayson song from their forthcoming musical From Here To Eternity previews of which start at the Shaftsbury Theatre in London this September Bizarrely it s not long since I read James Jones epic 1952 novel and loved every sentence I m chuffed Sir Tim gave us the opportunity to hear the demo of said song and have a crack at recording it I m also beyond thrilled to report that he loves what we did So a liberating few days at Snap Studios which incidentally has just won the much coveted Music Producers Guild Studio of the Year Award our sessions were engineered by Marco who hails from Bradford and is a mad keen City fan with tickets for the final on Sunday go go Bantams Of course Muddy s mum is from Swansea so a divided camp in our house The tracks are currently being mixed by Grant who luckily for us is also a wonderful producer he will then hand them over to be mastered then off to the pressing

you like for the other five we re having Pancake Wednesday and possibly Pancake Thursday and Saturday too Our friend Alison has been on said regime for two weeks and is more than happy with the progress having enjoyed three of the new flavor Kit Kats on Sunday her report as follows mint so so chunky choc fudge as you d imagine and coconut a surprise new favourite Great for her not so much for us in that she d actually bought them for us all to share So whilst I grieve for the pancakes and Kit Kats I will never know and look forward to my 2pm apple I ll fill you in on this week s other newsflash Steady yourselves Eggshell paint which in my book has always had a pleasingly low sheen has suddenly become shiny In fact shinier by far than any egg I ve ever seen After doing a bit of research I now understand that the paint world was rocked back in 2010 by the enforcement of The Volatile Organic Compounds in Paints Varnishes and Vehicle Refinishing Products Regulations 2005 Even after at least three minutes reading I have no idea what a VOC is but apparently they re not great for the environment so the paint folk have reduced the amount used in my pot of eggshell for the good of mankind I suppose I can t really argue with that and I have been reassured that the sheen will lessen within two weeks I ll keep you posted Other exciting news Tomorrow I start recording a new album with musical director Grant Windsor just voice and piano recorded proper old school i e totally live with no post event tinkering it will be a mix of great old standards a brand new

a blackbird doing its very best to escape what I m pretty sure was a sparrow hawk perched momentarily on the decking Much as it was horrible to see the blackbird so distressed it was breathtaking to see a bird of prey at such close quarters Today I intend to plant the garlic purchased at the Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight last year I m hoping I m not too late as I meant to do it in December but apparently they need cold frosty weather to do their thing so we might be in luck Due to badger bulb snuffling I will be planting them in pots and using John Innes Potting Compost No 3 the Rolls Royce of soil as recommended by the nice man at the garden centre As a break from gardening we went to see Les Misérables yesterday and I have to say I cried like a baby not at the film but at the price of the popcorn nearly 7 So I ve ordered my kernels and I m going to grow my own 10 Jan Where does the time go A belated Happy New Year to you I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas We certainly did The house was full of family and friends throughout the entire holiday It was great fun but I m shattered truth be told Thankfully January is mainly a time of reflection and thumb twiddling in the jazz calendar I can t believe that this time last year Muddy and I were en route to New Zealand neither can I fathom that we ve been living in our new house for 5 months WHERE DOES THE TIME GO In the midst of a tour I d say the busier you are the quicker it goes but then in quieter periods time also disappears very sneakily I ll look up from my computer after what feels like a couple of hours to find it s already gin and tonic time with very little done and not a child in the house washed Time however never goes fast in the dentist s chair or whilst filling out tax returns or hoovering yet it whizzes by in good company Fantastic meals in amazing restaurants never last as long as I d like but then neither do bottles of lovely wine Muddy can spend hours and hours and hours on the phone arguing an hour long call feels like minutes to her The internet gobbles up time like nobody s business A recent survey by sky Broadband suggested that 1 in 4 of us spend more time online than asleep and that over half of us suffer e anxiety if we re unable to check emails or Facewhatever every 10 minutes My main New Year s resolution is regardless of how fast or slow it goes to enjoy every minute I can and to not stress and worry Like so many people I feel utterly ruled by TIME and as 2013 is the Belgian year of change I intend to rebel a bit just to see if the world will actually end I wish weight was as easy to lose as time I seem to be drawn to weight especially at Christmas it just can t get enough of me and frequently hangs around for months on end and always uninvited I have just taken delivery of two skipping ropes which Muddy ordered online yesterday I ll be honest I m not keen but then as Muddy pointed out to me mid order whilst there s Christmas cake in the house 04 Jan Stuff Happens It was two nights before Christmas Well roughly six o clock When one of us happened to notice That the washer had er stopped And just like that dear reader It had ceased to go around With a drum chock full of water It d flippin broken down It was one night before Christmas When Comet came to call Hey are you a reindeer I bellowed down the hall No I m a delivery man With a very heavy box You poor thing there s 72 steps I ll see you at the top That was in the past my friends So fast forward to this year Muddy s sister and husband Are flying over here The annex bathroom s tatty The shower tray is bust We ll replace the tiles and shower tray And hoover up the dust It ll only take a day or two The plumbers both concurred It ll only take a day or two Well possibly a third It was when they moved the toilet That Mud s chin hit the floor As every single floorboard Was rotton to the core They worked and worked and finished the job Upon a midnight clear And by the time you read this Helen should be here Enjoying a brand new bathroom That we all like a lot Now we ve got to figure Why the water isn t hot So a happy hols to one and all 04 Jan The Mansion House Glastonbury is also known as the Isle of Avalon and after the recent rain I can understand why Unfortunately the bad weather has coincided with one of our busiest weeks this year By the time we eventually picked up pianist Grant on Wednesday afternoon we were already running 45mins late I then learned students were protesting outside Westminster I think because they ve changed the time of Home Away joking aside I truly believe everyone should be entitled to a free education and on any other day I d be out there routing for them With the car finally parked we scurried to The Mansion House Boris gaff where I fell rather spectacularly over my suit bag in my nice camel coat not real camel you understand although I do now have a bruised hump A nice banking type gentleman scooped me off the floor by which time

are picked before the tomato s natural flavor chemicals can develop I ve told our seeds to relax and do their thing in their own sweet time no rush just grow with the flow Because of our wily badgers I m trying to convince Muddy that as the lounge is south facing with underfloor heating the seedlings once transplanted would feel very at home there and perhaps more in the mood to grow Muddy however feels our fragile little seedlings would be happier in a draughty old outdoor grow house as nature intended and not cluttering up the house making everything smell The debate continues 29 Mar Snow Business like Show Business Last Tuesday found us at the Clwyd Theatr in Mold Flintshire A bitterly cold and rainy day had Muddy and I running from the car but as I scurried through the fire doors I suddenly realised this was the exact same venue I d played way back when I was just starting out I d been booked by the great impresario Aloma Williams my dear friend from University to provide musical entertainment to celebrate International Women s Day I think it must have been March 8th 1995 or 1996 I remember not yet having a band so having to resort to using backing tracks I also enlisted the help of the only female musician I knew at that time a new romantic electric guitarist I think her name was Alison I don t remember much about the gig other than the fact that actress Eileen Pollack who played Lilo Lil in Bread who d been performing elsewhere in the theatre that night stood at the bar for the second half Anyway we had a marvelous gig there this time it was wonderful to see Aloma s mum Lynn again after 18 years By the time we d reached our next concert destination in Derby just 3 days later Mold was under 15ft of snow Muddy and I had been working in London so made the decision to drive up to Derbyshire the night before the gig and woke to a thick covering of crisp and even that thankfully melted very quickly it snowed pretty much all day on Friday which made the boy s journey s back to London very slow Muddy and I returned to our very nice hotel in Castle Donington the highly recommended Priest House the bar was empty save for one other imbiber who greeted us thus I knew if I sat here long enough somebody would turn up for a chat Thankfully he wasn t a lunatic just a friendly chap stranded in the snow From Derby to Worcester where we partook of our regular gig day time wasting activity namely loitering in Boots We finished joyously at The Capitol Theatre in Horsham near Gatwick After weeks of too many late nights and hours and hours of driving I was so looking forward to a lie in The phone rang at 8 30am just as I was somewhere between deep sleep and coma Ah well Have a wonderful Easter everyone may your chocolate be endless 21 Mar Plums the word Having lived in a top floor flat for the last fifteen years gardening is still a bit of a novelty The bottom part of the garden being home to 3 fruit trees has been known affectionately as the orchard It has also been home to whacking great clumps of hogweed nettles and approx 25 tons of turfed over rubble and a mountain of garden rubbish Since January we ve been on a mission clearing areas by painstakingly digging up bits of brick and stone the weeds now run a mile as soon as they see our hero marching toward them with his petrol strimmer and thanks to a terrifically successful bonfire Mount Debris has vanished Much of this activity is down to Muddy and also to Mr A an acoustic gardener no power tools who has recently come on board to help us After surveying the area he suggested we plant a proper orchard and staked out plots for 9 more fruit trees We all then gathered round the laptop to choose some trees from the legendary Adam s Apples Mr Apples certainly knows his onions as does Mr A who counseled us on the pros and cons of various fruit breeds In the end we plumbed pardon the pun for six apple trees including an Exeter Cross the love child pip of a Worcester Pearmain and a Beauty of Bath dating back to 1924 which I understand will kick off our apple season future Augusts On planting day I broke the news to Mr A that only one tree had turned up and showed him the slim yet tall parcel He laughed and explained that as our trees were as yet not very big that this parcel most likely contained all of them On planting our James Grieve Mr A commented that it wasn t a great apple Why is it in OUR orchard then Turns out Jimmy Pollen is the king of pollinators and is situated bottom right to take advantage of the South Westerly winds In addition to the various apple trees we ve invested in two Victoria Plums and a Williams Pear We re also thinking about getting a peach or nectarine tree to plant in a big pot on the patio will this work Answers on a postcard please After all that now we just have to sit and wait for about four years to enjoy the fruits of our labour 13 Mar The Worst Day Friday started off in spectacular fashion with the unexpected arrival of two goldfinches and much as I would have loved to stay home and watch them all day Muddy and I not wanting to disappoint the music loving public of Clacton on Sea promptly departed having left more than enough time to travel the 222 miles in Friday traffic and arrive by

brush and a bucket of soapy water and applied my wax on wax off technique to the affected areas Looking out the next morning it was as if the patio had Vitiligo in that the areas I d scrubbed were pale and the rest of the patio was not Our hero leapt into action with the unidentified yellow thing that had been sitting in a box in the airing cupboard turns out it was a pressure washer and together they were doing a great job Muddy and myself now intrigued and itching to have a go went out to offer our help interference till the flipping thing sprung a leak minutes later The cost of a replacement hose thing cost as much as the machine itself and with the patio now a merry dance of spots stripes zig zags and a smiley faces and with guests arriving tomorrow evening a plan was needed Friday evening was given over to research and on Saturday morning our hero was deployed to Bath to buy the chosen model As a reward for picking it up and assembling it he was allowed first dibs Nobody ever tells you how addictive cleaning stuff with a pressure hose can be The three of us quicky became convinced that the other two simply didn t have the knack and were nowhere near as masterful and adept The most exciting transformation was removing all the moss slime and years of ground in muck from the pool frogswamp we also gave the cover a good going over and it almost looks inviting now the water is still like black treacle but it s a start How did we ever manage before without these gismos and gadgets We picked up another little gem this week a mouse sander Now I

more time off I set By 5 30 I was back in the car programmes made ready to drive home Whilst at the services mum rang to say that the weather on the news was terrible in the Mendips and was I alright Yeah fine where are the Mendips anyway Mum thought they were somewhere near Glastonbury she was right Muddy who had been cooking all day for dear friends coming that evening rang next It s snowing like you wouldn t believe here are you ok Yeah I m fine it s not snowing here oh it is now Within minutes whacking great flakes were falling out of the sky I was still 100 miles from home in the slow lane trying desperately not to panic whilst the outer lanes were covered with snow I thought what would dad have done He taught me to drive a stressful experience for both of us but probably more for him than me One snowy icy night shortly before my 2nd driving test dad decided in his wisdom that it would be good for me to learn how differently a car handles in adverse conditions We drove to the tiny village of Glusburn in low gear without deploying brakes all well and good until he directed me toward the steep and bumpy incline that is Institute St which I did This is where I learned how it feels to skid backwards down a big hill with cars parked on both sides of the street with little or no control whatsoever Treasured memories With the A37 now closed our poor guests had to turn back and I had to stay on the M5 driving miles out of my way to find an open road to Glastonbury The last leg of the journey was

or make you laugh or cry or see things a different way Most unusually the last three DVDs purchased have been absolute belters and I thought I would share them with you of course you may have already seen them or worst case take my recommendations buy the films but hate them and throw popcorn at the screen in disgust but I ll take my chances First up Stephen Daldry s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer s best selling novel Extremely Loud Incredibly Close The tale of an intense young boy struggling to come to terms with the loss of his father Tom Hanks in the September 11th terrorist attacks Thomas Horn plays Oskar Shell and his performance alone is worth watching the film It s quirky and unusual very sad in parts and although the character of Oskar is a right pain in the arris sometimes you can t help but fall in love with him Other than perfoming as a grasshopper in a primary school production of James and the Giant Peach Thomas Horn was an acting novice The director Stephen Daldry spotted him winning the kid s version of US quiz show Jeopardy Next up one of the most warm hearted funny and educational movies we ve had the pleasure to see Temple Grandin the true story of an autistic woman who overcame much discrimination to gain a doctorate Her mother was advised to institutionalize her non speaking 4 year old autistic daughter thankfully she didn t and through her support and that of various teachers the frighteningly intelligent Temple became an expert in animal behavior specialising in the humane treatment of cattle on farms and in abattoirs Temple is also a fantastic ambassador for autism in particular Asperger s syndrome travelling the world as a public
