000 miles the week before Muddy and I were getting a bit fed up of the M4 s teenagery behaviour general lethargy interspersed with sudden hissy fits On Wednesday we drove from Bath to London to do a live session and interview with Robert Elms for BBC London Radio This lasted about 20 minutes We then drove back to Bath in order to have a lovely dinner with our hero which he was cooking We d just pulled up outside the flat when he called to say would we mind if he went out for a curry with his mates instead Of course not darling Over a boiled egg we answered the emails packed and set off back up the M4 to a hotel in Cookham Dean darkest Berkshire the nearest place we could get to London excluding the 600 per night room at the Ritz of course Sat navs don t work in Cookham Dean nor do mobile phones Just after 10pm we finally found the hotel The alarm went off at 5 30am we stumbled back into the car and map read our way to the M40 pleasant change and headed for BBC TV Centre to have a chat on the Breakfast telly sofas with Sian and Charlie From there we headed across town to a lunch meeting in Islington Upon arrival I promptly walk into a glass door nearly snapping my hand off jazz singers and mornings not a winning formula so spent the rest of said morning it s still only 10 30am sitting in a café eating danish pastries with hand wrapped in ice After lunch shouldn t have eaten those pastries we head back to Bath What s for dinner our hero merrily chirps I think there s a curry in the freezer Hmph

island sadly owing to our schedule very quick but at least we got to see the front door of the famous German Underground Hospital Ted s family were relative newcomers to the Island 1701 whereas his late wife s descendants were a little more settled having first moved to Jersey in 1066 I hadn t fully appreciated that the Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans for nearly five years during the Second World War Jersey was finally liberated on May 9 1945 the day after the rest of Europe We had been invited to perform at the Liberation Day Music Festival It was a marvellous occasion and after such a great gig I was reluctant to leave but we had to catch the last flight back to London sparing only enough time to stock up on duty free gin and face cream at the airport We had to be back early in order to take part in Monday s Woman s Hour on Radio 4 As you know many serious issues are discussed on this programme which was first broadcast on October 7 1946 and I always feel a bit wish I d done better in my A levels when I go on Tuesday was spent cooped up in a tiny studio booth with a microphone and a pot of pencils talking in a jolly manner to what felt like every regional radio station in the country promoting the record Groundhog Day By half past three I was so hungry I started eyeing up the raspberry and echinacea herbal infusions Across the street from the studio on Great Titchfield St is the famed Scandinavian Kitchen Oh my if you are partial to exquisite freshly made open sandwiches and joyous tasty titbits this is the place for you Wednesday I

virtually every bit of her has been rebuilt or replaced over the last three years The following day she was going in for her 160 000 mile service quite an occasion for an old broad In order to uphold Beryl s dignity we thought the least we could do was put her through the car wash and Abergavenny seemed as good a place as any We gave her the works wheels undercarriage and all She emerged through the spinny chamois leather things looking all shiny and fab The next morning we drove Beryl over to the garage and arranged to pick her up at 11 30 We stressed the importance of letting us know if there was any change to the time as we had to be in Birmingham at 2pm me to record the radio shows and Muddy to buy me something to wear for our appearance on this Friday s This Morning with lovely Eamonn and Ruth If you can t do it by 11 30 just let us know and we ll go on the train Don t worry we ll have your car ready on time laydeeez Muddy and Beryl got back at 12 41pm It

discover it wasn t a feature about the interior of the flat but a feature about selling the flat our flat They took lots of photos but it seems the one they ll most likely use is an exterior shot all that cleaning In reality this is actually quite exciting As you may know we have ambitions to build our own house and though I d envisioned this happening a few years from now it seems it may well be happening a lot sooner The next day we left our ridiculously tidy flat and excitedly headed for the big smoke We have a friend who works for Radio 2 as a security guard If you need to know anything about the comings and goings of the station he s your man He s also worked for some of the most famous rock stars on the planet and if you catch him on a good day you hear stories that turn your eyes into saucers Quite a few months ago I was presenting a live broadcast when he pulled me to one side and said k d lang s just been booked to do a live concert for Radio 2 on April 20 thought you might want to know k d lang is without doubt the voice of her generation Her range style and vocal ability is quite extraordinary and I never miss the opportunity to see her sing live Last Wednesday s concert was incredible she was on top form performing songs from the new record Her new band the Siss Boom Bang didn t disappoint either We sat next to lovely Alex Lester and just along from the equally lovely Graham Norton Great singing continued to be the theme of the week as friends Chris and Al came to

problem today however is that I need to clean said study and frankly it s not going well Not only was I born with a crippling inability to throw away anything I also suffer terribly from dust blindness I must admit being oblivious to mess and clutter doesn t bother me in the slightest but it drives Muddy to distraction Hence I am up here but every time I pick up a CD or an instrument or a piece of music I have an overwhelming desire to play it At this rate I ll be here till Christmas 2025 The reason for this painful procedure is that a couple of chaps from one of the Sunday papers are coming round to take pictures of our home for a property feature The rest of the flat looks absolutely immaculate but then it always does as Muddy fortunately suffers from a cruel affliction called obsessive tidiness it affects everyone in the family and as far as I know there s sadly no cure Joking aside she has a fantastic flair for interior design A multitude of different styles all sit together happily I came in the other month to find her fitting

album launches mainly because they never feel real Singing your heart out in the middle of the day to a bunch of hard core world weary music industry types who are often more interested in the quality of the canapés and the quantity of the wine than your new record can be frankly terrifying This time round I m thrilled to say it was very different We asked Sir Michael Parkinson if he would be kind enough to introduce me which he did most eloquently and warmly Radio 2 were out in force and made lots of encouraging noises We kicked off with a samba version of Moloko s Sing It Back then segued into Try A Little Tenderness written in 1932 before bouncing back to the present day with Snow Patrol s Chasing Cars finishing with a New Orleans style rendition of Ray Noble s Love Is The Sweetest Thing with special guest saxophone legend Pee Wee Ellis We then played the new single and the rest of the record loudly over the PA People stayed on chatting well after the sausages on sticks were all gone which I took to be a good sign I was made up

for the following Tuesday As it was only Friday we couldn t wait that long and drove up the next day to have a look at it from afar and to check out the area As luck would have it we bumped into the owner while peering down his drive and he invited us in for a look round There wasn t one thing about the building and grounds that we didn t love There was a small river running under the lounge with an additional stream circling the mill before joining its big brother again The layout was perfect it could have been built just for us It had been on the market for some time but currently no one was seemingly as interested as we were We put the flat up for sale on the Monday and put an offer in on the mill and so began the adventure As it goes it was a rubbish adventure we learned that you shouldn t even bother making an offer until you ve sold your own property In the midst of the recession we just couldn t sell our place in time and somebody else came along and bought our beautiful mill Since then we haven t really been able to settle and have constantly been on the look out for another mill like property After a year we ve seen nothing and have slowly begun to realise that if the superb proportions of that lovely mill is what we want then we might have to build something containing them ourselves All this whilst watching the cruciform house on Grand Designs I suppose you could say this is going to be a long term project in that we haven t found or looked for any land yet Neither have we
