lovely ladies in the shop who welcomed us were so caring and warm you gave us perfect service perfect food in a perfect location We had a wonderful time Ivor and Belinda A big Thank You to you and your staff for the welcome you gave us for our stay also for the generosity you showed for our Golden Wedding Celebrations The night in the windmill the wonderful food and the lovely people we met all made the occasions one we will never forget Thank you to you all John Shirley Tina and I wanted to thank you and all the staff for our recent wedding and stay at Cley Windmill From the time of arriving up until leaving you and your staff made us feel totally comfortable and welcome The location to get married was better than we could have ever imagined the accommodation was fantastic and the food was absolutely out of this world Our wedding day was just perfect and there is nothing we would have changed Please pass on our thanks to the rest of the staff for making our visit a time we will never forget We will absolutely be returning Max Tina Many thanks for organising this splendid event Birdwatching Event It was absolutely first class and I hope you will repeat it perhaps in the spring to see the return of the summer visitors Andy could no doubt advise on the best time Every aspect was extremely well done the ambience of the mill and its location the catering the speakers the excursions the size of the group and its composition in part this was a happy accident although in my experience a group assembled to indulge a common avocation is usually compatible Once again congratulations on a successful and enjoyable event Timothy I can t begin to tell you what an amazing time we all had last weekend at what must be one of the most magical accommodating and friendly destinations we have ever stayed at The feedback we have had from everyone was without doubt a great tribute to you all and we were thrilled with everything you provided us with over the weekend From the booking of the Windmill last October to the organising of menus and rooms and the resulting weekend away your attention to detail was second to none On our arrival Simon greeted us all personally showing everyone to their fabulous rooms and making us all very welcome The lounge made a great focal point for our get togethers and was witness to much singing games and revelry The meals both at breakfast and in the evening were truly wonderful and the staff were a credit to you The girls who looked after us in the evenings were really lovely and friendly and helped make the weekend the special occasion it was The only problem now is that I am under pressure from everyone to do it all again So be warned we may be back So

the bridge to its car park the words How beautiful the place is watch is hold time still could never seem more appropriate The windmill is everything you might expect compact comfortably furnished relaxed and incredibly friendly Our room is on the ground floor and used to belong to the old miller It has views over the walled garden to the reeds beyond The wall around the garden which appears purely decorative is the final desperate measure to protect the mill from a flood There are flood emergency instructions in place but the last major occurrence was in 1953 All guests dine at the same time with the same menu there is no choice and it changes daily The seems strange but after a hectic week and long drive it is an unexpected pleasure not to have to make any decisions All ingredients are sourced locally and we enjoy an exceptional supper The following day wishing I had refused the last glass of fizz of the night before we go to the car park to meet out guide from North Norfolk Birds Andy Stoddart Andy has been bird watching for more than 30 years and a resident in Norfolk for 20 He offers private individually tailored tours throughout Norfolk We had arrived on a special day The excitement here and up on the bank is caused by yesterday s arrival of two red rumped swallows explains Andy They rarely come to the UK so it s a real treat We leave the red rumps to the more experienced watchers and head to Cley Marsh There is always something to see here no matter what time of the year says Andy It s obvious from the outset that he isn t going to disappoint us his experience is outstanding and he informs entertains and enthuses us without making us feel overwhelmed We meander along a path surrounded by reed beds until we arrive at the first hide where we watch avocets casting their beaks side to side searching for food among the black tailed godwits who energetically probe with their long bills Andy sets up a powerful telescope and the close up view is spectacular From this hide we also enjoy the oystercatchers sandwich terns and a variety of gulls As we continue our walk a cacophony of shrieks assaults our ears Andy calls our attention to the tune of the sedge warbler This bird is the joker a mimicker he explains You can hear his version of the swallow and goldfinch plus a blend of foreigners from travels abroad Then we see him perched but beautifully camouflaged to the untrained eye The chap we see is desperate for a mate and he s singing to let all the single girls know he s available Farther along the bank we see young lapwings skimming round the waters edge under the surveillance of their mother Sadly only a few will survive Herons and harriers will take them if they can explains Andy
