  • How I built the Derby Choice Website | Clifton Media - Website and
cover Activities services provided Website design Home page design decisions Click to enlarge When researching the project I looked at a number of other directory driven websites and found that most of them had too many features with cluttered interfaces This is usually due to poor planning at the outset of the project leading to the website having no clear purpose I wanted to try and keep things as simple as possible so much of the design process involved actually trying to remove anything which would make the site harder to use or navigate Bearing in mind that the main purpose of the site is to help users find the right provider to suit their needs the top of each page has a clear area signposted Search here and a simple search facility Users need to find what they want as quickly as possible and the provider listings make it easy for users to get in touch Home page The home page contains a random list of providers so users can get an instant understanding and feel of what the site is about There is also a slideshow a clear message describing the site s purpose and 2 recent news items and upcoming events How the website was built The site was built using WordPress a Content Management System CMS I use a great deal it is the same CMS used to build my own site clifton media co uk Whilst researching possible solutions for the website I found that many of the products tools and off the shelf plugins for creating directory driven websites were just too complicated and so I ended up pretty much building the site from scratch and customising the functionality and design to our requirements The process for getting a listing published User registration was a challenge as we had to make it as a easy as possible for potential providers to get listed as well as making it easy for the website administrator to approve listings The steps to getting a listing published were as follows Anyone can register with the thence and create a provider listing Once their listing is completed they submit it for approval to the website administrator If approved the listing goes live on the site The feedback from the website has been great and the website has been well received by the client providers and users About the Author Written by markpollak Mark has 14 years experience in Website and Graphic Design He got a MA in Interactive Design from Bath Spa University College way back in 2000 and has been running Clifton Media ever since moving from Bristol to Derbyshire in 2001 Categories News Projects teaching Tags artist cookie database development derby choice directory mobile website design news online tutor responsive university of derby web app website website design wordpress Mark s Blog Website for a local Stained Glass Artist I worked with Dave Griffin on his original website a number of Web app for students to record

  • EU Cookie Law - How to make your website compliant | Clifton Media - Website and
can only sympathise with those websites who would have taken a great deal of time in order to implement the requirements for explicit consent in time for the deadline only to find out that on the day the law became valid the rules were changed Five steps to implementing the Cookie Law The Information Commissioner s Office ICO has suggested that the most important thing is for websites to take steps in the right direction for compliance The ICO has stated that if you can show you re moving towards full compliance then you re unlikely to be targeted Do a cookie audit identify all cookies associated with your website Rename your Privacy Policy Privacy and Cookies and make it reasonably prominent Add accurate and clear information on each cookie being used in a way that a layman can understand on the privacy and cookies policy If your website uses embedded social buttons e g Facebook Addthis you should also note this in the privacy and cookies policy and state that these third parties might be gathering usage information If you use third party services such as YouTube you should note this too and state that they may also gather information on usage While you re at it this is also a good opportunity to revisit your privacy policy and check it s up to date Where to add the link to the privacy policy The ICO would probably prefer the policy to be prominently placed at the top of the page but most organisations would rather have visitors to their site looking at their website content rather than some boring privacy policy Looking at many other sites I am at least for now advising our clients to place it in the footer Most of our clients are small businesses in any event and highly unlikely to be targeted by the ICO It s also worth remembering that the vast majority of websites will do nothing at all to comply in any event Now look here I m not going to hurt you You do see a few Goody Two Shoes websites which have their compliance at the top of the page but just think of how a visitor to the website would react to seeing these messages This approach is abit like lying down in the dental chair for a checkup and the very first thing the dentist says to you is Look I m not going to hurt you See for example the Clarke Willmott website which whilst being in full compliance with the directive will certainly put off users That s a lot of space being taken up Moving onto the big commercial players you won t see anything like the approach above Amazon have just put a small link to the policy right at the bottom of the page as they know that a large banner message will put off users and move their content further down the page The bare minimum Many government websites also
