  • TRAC wins Horizon Award for up-and-coming talent

  • Autumn Statement – the relevant bits
    Cornwall we can expect these to be delivered in 2018 The Department for Transport will work with the Peninsula Rail Task Force and other local stakeholders in the South West to publish a report next year with options for creating a dedicated new franchise for Devon and Cornwall Cornwall specific The government announced it will extend existing Enterprise Zones in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Enterprise Zones are areas where small companies get business support and pay reduced rates the idea is to help create more start ups in order to boost growth The only one mentioned in the small print was Aerohub but we know that Goonhilly will also now be included in a zone The government claims to be entering a devolution revolution Local leaders will have radical new powers to take responsibility for driving local growth like allowing them to retain their business rates agreeing historic devolution deals and making further targeted investments in response to local priorities In stark contrast to the Summer Budget Cornwall was absent from any talk of devolution in this statement Now let s look at how yesterday s announcements might affect the running of your business on a day to day basis Tax goes digital Back in March the Government said it would transform the tax system by introducing simple secure and personalised digital tax accounts this would mean we could wave goodbye to annual tax returns The idea is to give individuals and businesses a more convenient real time view of their tax affairs providing them with greater certainty about the tax they owe The government s target is to reduce the costs to business of tax administration by 400 million by the end of 2019 20 Yesterday the Government announced that it would take the first steps in making this happen by investing 1 3 billion to transform HMRC they have even said that digital tax accounts will be accessible for small businesses and individuals by 2016 17 By 2020 most businesses and the self employed will be required to keep track of their tax affairs digitally and update HMRC at least quarterly via their digital tax account For those that aren t digitally savvy we re assured HMRC will provide free apps and software which provide support There s talk of options to simplify the payment of taxes like whether to align payment dates and bring them closer to the point when profits arise so that taxpayers make a single regular payment that covers all of their tax affairs Apprenticeships As announced earlier in the year the Government wants to put employers in control of apprenticeship funding through a new levy The Apprenticeship levy will be introduced in April 2017 it will be set at a rate of 0 5 of an employer s paybill and will be paid through PAYE Each employer will receive an allowance of 15 000 to offset against their levy payment This means that the levy will only be paid on any
