  • Corridor8 #1 Launch / Iain Sinclair | Corridor8 —
    officially at hubbub Brace yourselves 18 50 Bit more background For the opening issue of Corridor8 Sinclair has been commissioned to take a walk around Manchester presumably to give the psychogeographer s point of view of the city Press release again This issue s literary feature is by Iain Sinclair Commissioned especially by Corridor8 the writer and psychogeographic journeys through the SuperCity reporting back about what he finds He is accompanied on one of these forays by filmmaker Chris Petit who keeps a photographic record of what becomes at times a Fear and Loathing style odyssey On another journey he and wife Anna both have recently reached their seniority travel the entire Liverpool Hull route by bus pass stopping over in Manchester and visiting Freeport The findings of both journeys are unexpected to reader and author alike and have resulted in Sinclair basing a major new book in the region The last sentence there is the intriguing one Previously I think I m right correct me if I m not that all of Sinclair s books have been based in London so something suitably impressive must have happened as he walked the streets of Manchester We ll see eh By the way the audience tonight is dauntingly attractive Is it an Urbis thing Or is it Sinclair fans I need to know 19 00 Attractive audience coming in strong now So this is what it feels like to be bum rushed by the beautiful people By the way this is the podcast of Sinclair s walk if you d like to take a listen yourself There s also a map of the route he took along with some background Lollygaggers are being rounded up and we re beginning The audience 19 10 Minor microphone snafu attractive audience resumed susurrating 19 11 We re back Housekeeping What to do in an evacuation Toilets Seriously you don t need this stuff but it s good that I ve got a note 19 13 First Issue of Corridor8 looks at architecture art writing across the trans pennine region Warm cheers for editorial team of Michael Butterworth publisher Jo McGonigal Creative Editor Roger McKinley Editor Laura Mansfield Assistant Editor The theme for the first issue is the Supercity hence why Iain has been wandering around various parts of it 19 15 Ha The breads are art All of those hungry attractive audience members you ve been eating ART 19 19 Sinclair Pleased to be taken out of his own territory and praising the ferocious engagement of Manchester reading public Unsurprisingly goes down well with the Mcr crowd 19 22 Dedicating the talk to J G Ballard mentioned heavily in Michael Butterworth s editorial introduction to Corridor8 Ballard was a man of the car and writers fall into two categories pods or peds I drove here tonight Sinclair introducing the talk by saying about how his walks in London and its nascent Olympic environment relates to post Commonwealth Games Manchester through shared icons such as

  • Review: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester | Corridor8 —
    formed that they might be said to constitute a story The resultant text became the stimulus for the production of new work for the show The story is predictably meandering and nonsensical but not plotless It tells the tale of Darren who potters from a caravan to a Debenhams to a bus stop to his ex s flat He has a curious fixation on gaudy mass culture ephemera and an unusual tendency to refer to pre existing paintings from his oeuvre The participating artists cum writers aim was that this singular subject matter would lay the foundations for a harmonious exhibition Thus although the exhibition slots most easily into the second category of group show we also have an overarching subject matter How did the artists respond Lindsey Mendick s Our Earthly Pleasures features ceramic plates decorated with deliberately crude paintings of objects that litter the story Pepperami Calvin Klein perfume Crocs and the Havana cigar ashtray all make appearances The plates adorn a large print of a nondescript tropical island It is stuck to the back wall of the lower gallery askew presumably out of Mendick s deep seated distrust of the conventional angle at which pictures are traditionally hung Some works seem to respond to specific moments from the story s narrative In Soft Hand one of two video works by Jemma Egan an artificial hand is extended towards the camera hopelessly trying to caress the bemused viewer It brings to mind the line You muster a pleasant goodbye and reach out a red manicured hand that I take too quickly Josh Whitaker s contribution is much more direct he responds to the line you made a flag bearing the phrase Ti Amo by making a flag bearing the phrase Ti Amo Despite the story being a series

  • Review: Micro Micro Revolution, CFCCA, Manchester | Corridor8 —
    series of cultural actions which are documented creatively These actions are determined to re engage new generations with their environment The hope is to bring about awareness on the issues facing these communities uncovering a collective history in the process This exhibition remains in a state of progression where we can immerse ourselves in both community made artworks and ongoing research Admittedly it s not easy to immediately grasp the location of the art work as a whole Initially the research format seems fragmented But this exhibition isn t a quick fix instead it requires attention and time in which the viewer can undergo a process of engagement with the issues at hand It also requires an imagination one which can work with the community to imagine new ecological relationships to their land This kind of piece works best when a fundamental autonomy of the communities is realised the artists instead taking a more curatorial role Although facilitated by Wu Mali Bamboo Curtain Studio Films this exhibition facilitates this autonomy arguably allowing the community a more immediate agency in writing their historical ties We see past present and future trajectories of the communities stretching their actions across history and rooting them in their land Plant Matter Needed documents a collaboration of social activism between the residents of the Sa owac village dwelling and artists Hsu Su chen and Lu Chien ming The Sa owac village dwelling faced demolition by the local council with this exhibition following a period of protest and reconstruction through videos texts and objects presented within a reconstruction of one the Sa owac dwellings The rebuilding of the Sa owac dwellings signifies an attempt to not only practically preserve the tribe s cultural space but for those engaged to re define their socio spatial relationships collectively This

  • Interview: Jo McGonigal & Deb Covell, Real Painting, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester | Corridor8 —
    referential or pseudo SJ There s been a lot of attention given to the absence of pictures in the show Can you explain more about the decision JMc It s more a kind of emptying painting of image foregrounding other concerns instead the medium s physical material properties and behind the scenes elements its grammar and engagement with space over the pictorial and finally our perceptual relationship to the made and found DC The blankness and open endedness of the monochrome soon became an integral part of our thinking as it allowed for an emphasis on colour tone form weight and material concerns all of painting s basic components but without image We began to see how the works could relate to each other formally and within the gallery s architecture Whilst this particular kind of work is already well established in America and Europe it s less so here The British painting scene is generally more rooted in a pictorial referential image based culture SJ A couple of the works even seem to empty painting of paint I m thinking for example of Adriano Costa s carpet based piece Piece 2014 or Jo s own Yellow Yellow 2015 Can your explain their inclusion DC Adriano and Jo s contributions are perhaps the most difficult to fit neatly under the bracket of painting Although Adriano hasn t used paint in this particular piece there have been references to its gloopy shape and descriptions of the carpet strands as being like individual brushstrokes not to mention it s also wall mounted His work conflates painting and sculpture residing in the gap between the two JMc Yellow Yellow started off as a silk scarf and old M S t shirt two flat rectangular monochromes pinned to the studio wall I was interested in how they related to the painted surface and transmitted and absorbed light By tying the two together they lost some of their connection to the everyday and became simply the colour yellow which then became its form Yellow is a physical colour It has an inherent strength and complexity its own presence and certainty The examination of colour its physicality how it operates is an entirely painterly concern Yellow Yellow does not aim to represent something else but simply declares its own presence SJ The Castlefield Gallery is quite an awkward space architecturally What role does it play in the exhibition JMc All the pieces were chosen with the space very much in mind We wanted to make the viewer feel distinctly present through playing with closeness distance and scope For example David Goerk s Red Wand is hidden behind one of the pillars at certain vantages but then springs out from others due to the way in which red operates The work has great presence despite being so tiny Simon Callery s Auricle 2012 is situated deliberately at the entrance to the gallery so that it functions in a physically confrontational way where it can only be seen
