  • Borrowash, Derbyshire, England - Photographs and History
    One of them had undergone more regular interrment being enclosed as it were in a kind of vault over which stones had been piled The most important find was a stone axe head in Sheffield Museum with the rest The whole of the Bateman collection was sold to Sheffield Borrowash has its own school which is Ashbrook Infants Junior located on Victoria Avenue Victoria Avenue is the main road on the west side of the village which goes to Ockbrook It used to be called Ockbrook Lane The Trees which line it were given by H Tropolet Alton the brewer who lived in Borrowash at that time For a map of the Borrowash area click HERE For an Aerial photo of the Borrowash Ockbrook areas click HERE I would like to thank Mary Beilby of the Borrowash Historical Society Pat Sheldon Kevin Bailey for the help they provided me with while creating this page Photo Description Borrowash view Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 01 Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This is a view of the shops on Derby Road as viewed from Victoria avenue To the left of me is a car park for Safeway and Wilson s the chemist This corner used to have a row of terraced houses and other shops including Radford s Greengrocers and Bentlys sweet shop and the Foresters Arms pub these were demolished in the 1970 s Photo Description Borrowash Methodist church Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 02 Exact map location Click HERE Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This fine looking chuch is located on Derby Road A6005 It was built in 1899 replacing the one built in 1826 and took one year to build To the right of this church is Borrowash post office Photo Description Noah s Ark pub Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 03 Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This local pub is called the Noah s Ark and it is located on the corner of Derby Road and Station Road It has been there since at least 1797 To view a fading then and now photo of this location see my page HERE Photo Description Borrowash Library Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 04 Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This building is Borrowash library built in 1903 but it was originaly built as the Primitive Methodist Church The land it stands on was purchased in 1887 It is located part way down Victoria Avenue Photo Description Wilmot Arms pub Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 05 Exact map location Click HERE Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This nice looking Ivy clad pub is called the Wilmot Arms and it is located on Derby Road slightly out of the village in the direction of Derby Photo Description St Stephen s church Image Reference No DP 050902BORRO 06 Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This is Saint Stephen s church which was built in 1889 by P

  • Ockbrook, Derbyshire, England - Photographs and History
    views towards the south of Derbyshire from the settlement Ockbrook village was once a textile centre and some cottages still show long lines of framework knitters windows in their upper storeys For more info on Ockbrook Moravian click HERE For a map of the Ockbrook area click HERE For an Aerial photo of the Ockbrook Borrowash areas click HERE Photo Description Church farm Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information Church farm dates from the 17th century and is an impressive timber framed building It is in a bad state of repair but is currently being restored Photo Description All Saints church Exact Map Location Click HERE Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information All saints church became the parish church in the mid 1500 s It used to be a chapelry of Elvaston It has a Saxon Norman font and an Oak chancel screen dating from 1520 The hatchment has references to the Pares family of Hopewell hall and patrons of the Ockbrook and Borrowash anglican churches Hatchments were paintings of coats of arms or eschutcheons made for the funerals This was for the funeral of Thomas Pares who died in 1805 Paraded at the funeral they were then hung aver the door of the house for some time before being fixed in the church Pares of Hopwell Hall have memorials here because that family were patrons of the church i e they appointed the vicar One of the family is still patron but patrons now have less of a say in appointments Photo Description The White Swan pub Date photo taken 5th September 2002 Other Information This pub on church street is called The White Swan and is across the road from All Saints Church It has a playground for children at the back It also
