    s Day Alternatives 5 Key Species to look out for on Exmoor 5 Top Picnic Spots 5 Sporting Suggestions 4 Unusual Exmoor animals 4 Exmoor beer gardens 4 key Somerset cricket players 4 Coastal days out 4 Exmoor Events for June July 6 History and Heritage days out around Exmoor 10 Facts on marshes Porlock Marsh Lost manuscript of Exmoor writer discovered Published by Duddings in Minehead Self Catering 4 9 2014 10 52 39 Tags Minehead Holiday Cottages A long lost manuscript written by a well known Exmoor writer has been discovered after 45 years Hope Bourne the Exmoor naturalist who became famous in the 1970s for her self sufficient lifestyle wrote a manuscript for a novel called A Village Of The Moor 45 years ago but had it turned down by her publisher Now after Hope died aged 91 in 2010 it has been found in an old and dusty storeroom and is set to be published Hope became famous because her remote rural lifestyle was simply so unusual She lived in a leaky caravan just a few miles from our Minehead Holiday Cottages on Exmoor and shot game grew vegetables and foraged for food to survive Popular Hope was known by everyone on the moor and beyond thanks to her knowledge on farming hunting and wildlife and her newspaper column and books She was made nationally famous by a 1978 documentary about her A recent documentary thrust her into the spotlight again following her death and now her life is set for more scrutiny thanks to this novel A Village Of The Moor tells how Exmoor started to see a change from traditional life as it adjusted to the modern world in the 1960s The manuscript was penned at a time when Hope was actually living in

    History and Heritage days out around Exmoor 10 Facts on marshes Porlock Marsh Orphaned pony sweeps board at Exmoor Pony Show Published by Duddings in Somerset 20 8 2014 17 19 56 Tags Somerset Holiday Cottages We blogged a few weeks ago about the Exmoor Pony Show which was set to take place in the next few weeks Well that show has now taken place and it s generated an incredible story for us to share with you That story is one which touched our hearts because it s all about how a young pony which was orphaned when its mother was hit by a car has swept the board at the show The show took place in Brendon not far over the Devon and Somerset border from our Somerset holiday cottages last week The star of that show was Que Sera Sera more affectionately known as Libby Poor Libby was orphaned when she was just two weeks old when her mother was struck by a car on a busy section of the A39 through Exmoor Poor Libby was taken in by Bethany Hernaman and her family who adopted the three year old when she was just a tiny foal Libby who is now the Exmoor Pony Society s Supreme In Hand Champion Moorbred Champion Registered Exmoor Champion and Registered Exmoor Youngstock Champion almost didn t make it through the days that followed Farmer James Bryant struggled to bottle feed the foal and was advised to put her down but unwilling to shoot her he kept trying to bottle feed her It was only when in desperation he poured milk into a bucket that Libby finally drank Libby then started to grow strong and was taken in by Bethany at her parents farm near Brendon In the last three years

    Top Picnic Spots 5 Sporting Suggestions 4 Unusual Exmoor animals 4 Exmoor beer gardens 4 key Somerset cricket players 4 Coastal days out 4 Exmoor Events for June July 6 History and Heritage days out around Exmoor 10 Facts on marshes Porlock Marsh Lottery funds provide watersports access at Calvert Trust Published by Duddings in Somerset 28 3 2014 14 34 44 Activity centre improvements see addition of pontoon A significant activity centre based on Exmoor near our Somerset holidays cottages has opened a brand new water sports facility after successfully winning 50 000 in a lottery competition The activity centre at the Calvert Trust Exmoor based at Wistlandpound Reservoir received the boost after gaining the most number of votes from the public in the Big Lottery s People s Millions competition in November last year Now people staying in holiday cottages in the area who have booked into one of the group sessions at the Calvert Trust will be able to take full advantage of the facilities This is thanks to the Trust putting half of its winnings into a pontoon in order to make their water sports facilities more accessible The new additions are a wonderful opportunity for people who have a disability to enjoy these exclusive facilities who can be joined by people who are coming to support disabled visitors The pontoon was used for the first time over the weekend and saw excited visitors make use of the centre and the access to the water so that they could go canoeing kayaking and sailing Additionally the pontoon has two hoists that assist wheelchair users get into boats and a semi submersible platform If you fancy a visit but you re not keen on water sports the Calvert trust also offers climbing cycling orienteering and other activities
