    cricket players 4 Coastal days out 4 Exmoor Events for June July 6 History and Heritage days out around Exmoor 10 Facts on marshes Porlock Marsh Unexploded bomb points to Exmoor s hidden military history Published by Duddings in Exmoor 30 1 2014 17 00 20 Tags Unexploded Bomb Exmoor History Walks Duddings News Exmoor is location on historic find An unexploded bomb has been found underneath a popular path on Exmoor and destroyed in a controlled explosion The bomb found by a walker staying in Exmoor holiday cottages was spotted over the weekend when rain washed away earth which had previously covered the German bomb which turned out to be harmless The walker called Avon and Somerset police who called in the Royal Navy s Explosives Ordnance Division They unearthed the 100lb explosive which had lain hidden near Larksborough Ruin Porlock since the 1940s and disposed of in a controlled explosion While that may make Exmoor sound like a dangerous place it s actually an indication of how the area is teeming with history Unexploded bombs are extremely rare on Exmoor and even when they do turn up they re often so old and corroded they no longer pose a danger Which makes the area ideal for exploring with your dog For example the unexploded bomb found this weekend was near Alderman s Barrow a popular Bronze Age burial site Near Minehead is North Hill home to a World War II radar station and also an area where extensive war time training took place More than 20 square kilometres of land at Tom s Hill is peppered with craters left by the war time Exmoor firing range where the Royal Engineers trialled some of the earliest developed military rockets The area is also home to many slit trenches dugouts
