    June July 6 History and Heritage days out around Exmoor 10 Facts on marshes Porlock Marsh Taxi dermy for one Published by Duddings in Minehead 21 10 2013 13 46 57 Taxi dermy for one There are all hosts of reasons why self catering Minehead holiday attract visitors but there s one local lady whose work is in a league of its own Local resident Liz Davis deals with animals on a day to day basis but not in a way of which you would relate the title She is in fact a taxidermist Over the past year Liz has been taking her work home with her and working on these miniature creations in her free time ever since she took a course in taxidermy She said I really fancied having a go at it as I ve always collected it so I went on a course a few years ago and learnt how to do birds Liz added It s more than just a hobby for me for a while it was my main source of income I didn t want to go back to hairdressing and there weren t many exciting job opportunities in Minehead so I decided to go ahead with my taxidermy Many mice end up dressed up as a variety of celebrities a favourite choice of design of Liz s with such famous names as the Pope and Lord Nelson to Hannibal Lecter amongst other scary characters Liz has been recognised for her talent and is even going to feature later this month as a guest on the Alan Titchmarsh show and she s already been on Russell Howard s Good News Russell hates mice so he was a bit freaked out with my work but Alan seemed to really like it He went through

    of the Minehead area is nothing new particularly those vacationing in Minehead holiday cottages However a different kind of interest was attracted when Minehead Cycling Club s inaugural time trial Hill Climb enticed one high profile entrant to test herself on this challenging event The event which saw cyclists ride up the Porlock Toll road also attracted some of the country s leading climbers but the star attraction and a real legend of recent times will be a member of the all conquering Great Britain Track Cycling team Wendy Houvenaghel Between 2008 2012 Wendy claimed 3 World Championship Gold medals in the Team Pursuit 4 silvers at both Individual and Team Pursuit not to mention a silver in the Individual Pursuit at the Beijing Olympics This undoubtedly marks her out as one of the country s most successful riders of all time Competing for the extensive prize list were National Championship riders as well as a contingent of local and club cyclists who were looking to out do the big guns on the day Club Chairman Bernie Mitchell said The first staging of this exciting addition to the national cycling calendar has attracted a field of 88 top class riders from all over the west of England and beyond The timed ascent of the iconic almost Alpine 4 mile climb which Porlock Manor Estate is closing to traffic for the duration will give the riders a rare chance to compete on a traffic free road in one of the most scenic areas in Somerset where Duddings offer our Minehead holiday cottages The route and particularly the finish were absolutely superb for spectators The Exmoor Explorer Mountain Bike race committee generously donated all of the extensive prize money and people from Porlock Village Hall provided the riders catering facilities and many

    marshes Porlock Marsh Dulverton Pub makes National Top 10 Published by Duddings in Exmoor 2 9 2013 10 41 48 Tags Exmoor Holiday Cottages Dulverton Pub makes National Top 10 Self catering holidays on Exmoor are a very popular choice for people looking for a relaxing break in the countryside But these aren t the only popular choice on Exmoor as a Dulverton pub has notched up not one but two accolade s in a publication that many in the know consider to be the pub goers bible Woods was named as the national wine pub of the year for an impressive fourth year running and has now secured a place as one of the top ten pubs in the country Both awards in were announced in The Good Pub Guide 2014 last week Paddy Groves and his partner Sally Harvey created Woods after transforming the former bakery into what it is today nine years ago The Good Pub Guide which is published annually defined Mr Groves as really rewarding to talk to about his wine The guide also went on to say that He will open any of his 400 listed bottles for just a glass and he may even tempt you to one of his unlisted collection of 500 well aged New World wines The top ten position accredited for the first time recognises the pub as being amongst an exclusive number of pubs absolutely at the top of their game The success of the establishment is down to a combination of factors one of those being that Mr Groves owns a farm just above Dulverton which provides the pub with the some of the meats such as the pork and lamb As well as this a large quantity of the poultry for the restaurant also comes from
