    2013 we brought you some fun facts about the wonderful destination that is The Exmoor National Park most were largely uncommon facts Well as it s New Year we thought we d treat you to some more useful information for when you stay in your Exmoor holiday cottages in one of the South West s more picturesque and appealing areas Home to Europe s highest and lowest tides The Bristol Channel comes only second to that of the Bay of Fundy in Canada for the title of highest and lowest tides in the world meaning that Exmoor claims the title for Europe Records shows that the biggest range is a spectacular 45ft Remote land is Exmoor s middle name Due to the sheer height and steepness of the cliffs on the Exmoor shoreline you will not find any landward access between the six mile stretches from that of Heddon s Mouth in Combe Martin and Countisbury to Glenthorne therefore making it the most remote in England Exmoor s rocks are on the move Slowly Roughly 350 million years ago you would have found the majority of Exmoor s rock located in the southern hemisphere this is where they were formed They moved due to continental drift If we were to look forward another 100 million years we would find that Exmoor will be located north of the Arctic Circle Home of the UK s oldest breed of horse With only a few hundred of this special breed left on Exmoor and Worldwide combined the Exmoor pony finds itself more endangered than that of the giant panda not found on Exmoor They are the closest breed left that can be connected to the wild horses that originally meandered in Britain in prehistoric times Britain s longest path starts at Exmoor Starting

    spring may have sprung already if reports from across the country are to be believed The news comes on the back of reports to the Woodland Trust of dozens of spring sights being seen The Trust said it has received reports from some of its thousands of volunteers of sightings of swallows snowdrops and more including one report from a couple staying in Exmoor holiday cottages So despite the fact 2014 is only two weeks old we thought we d take a look at four places to see the sights smell the smells and hear the sounds of an early spring Snowdrop Valley Given its name it probably isn t a surprise that Snowdrop Valley is one of the best places to see the flower The valley which is covered in a carpet of thousands of little white flowers every spring is at Wheddon Cross near Cutcombe making it the perfect place to visit from our self catering Minehead cottages The privately owned valley is opened up by owners The Badgworthy Land Company throughout February with Exmoor National Park Authority and Cutcombe Parish Council operating a park and ride service and an information point Visit www wheddoncross org uk snowdropvalley htm for more information Horner Wood The Trust has received nine reports of sightings of Swallows since December 1 which is highly unusual it s thought the birds must have stayed in Britain over the winter rather than fly south And if you want to catch sight of the first Swallow on Exmoor this spring you can head to Horner Wood near Porlock where the Somerset Ornithological Society has a hide The society also has a list of sites where birds are commonly spotted on its website www somersetbirds net exmoor htm Wistlandpound Reservoir Ducks with ducklings have also been
