and safety matters The Loughborough work was part of a broader project funded by ConstructionSkills to develop products to support the communication of health and safety knowledge between non low English speaking construction workers and English speaking site managers This research analysed migrant worker and manager perspectives understandings everyday work practices and variable roles on site qualitatively using a range of ethnographic research methods to investigate how communication successfully takes place between migrant workers their native co workers and managers supervisors in practice These methods produced rich qualitative data offering an in depth understanding of how communications actually already happen and of the existing forms of safe working practices that develop on site that is not accessible through standard interview and focus group methods At Eclipse we provide interpreters and translators to help with many practical matters and were delighted to see that among a number of recommendations that included more effective site inductions and language training was the key role translators and interpreters can play in enabling communication between migrant workers and their indigenous counterparts The report calls for the official recognition of the practices of translation and interpretation especially in terms of formalising this role on site A scheme to assess language translation and interpretation skills would be beneficial both for contractors to provide a knowledge base of the language skills and competencies of migrant workers and for better acknowledging the skills set and enhancing the career path of migrant workers in construction At Eclipse we believe there are a number of different ways including helping to develop improved communications with migrant workers where our expertise can add value and welcome the opportunity to explain how we can assist companies in the sector The full report Migrant construction workers and health safety communication can be viewed here https

  • Refugee crisis – Coping strategies for public service interpreters? - Eclipse Translation
in their home countries who have chosen to settle and become public service interpreters in the UK It was a very informative piece of work and there was much discussion around topics such as whether their experiences allowed a greater degree of empathy for those newly arriving in the UK and how have their own experiences in the countries from which they have fled coloured their work as interpreters One area that I found particularly interesting was the level of support being offered to public service interpreters and translators who work very closely with refugees and were themselves disturbed and stressed by the stories they heard While some interpreters have the ability to divorce themselves from intense emotional issues others are not able to do so and as a result are affected by what they may hear or see So there is a question as to how those operating in the public service arena are themselves provided with support and coping strategies and how as an industry we can provide effective training to cope with the issues and the consequences that this brings to their lives From the reports that we are hearing the influx of refugees to Northern Europe will continue for a number of years and the movement of people could be in the millions It will be a challenge in itself to ensure that there are enough interpreters and translators to cope with the numbers involved It is all the more reason that we need to ensure that our colleagues in the industry are provided with coping strategies to undertake such important and vital work while ensuring that their own wellbeing is looked after You are here Home Blog Refugee crisis Coping strategies for public service interpreters Latest Blog Articles Golden Bridge Winners Day in Brussels Communication

and corporate culture PowerPoint presentations and the speakers notes documents to be discussed copies of speeches to be delivered multilingual glossaries of the relevant terminology acronyms summaries or minutes of previous meetings list of speakers and delegates so interpreters can familiarise themselves with participants and any difficult pronunciations speakers bios files of any films to be shown so that interpreters can prepare a summary of content The down side of technology of course means that in the real world your presenters are often finishing their presentation a day or two before the conference However even a draft version is helpful to an interpreter and if similar topics are covered each year it s useful to send last year s presentations to give an indication of likely subject matter Of course we understand all files are confidential We already have our own confidentiality agreements in place and are happy to sign any additional NDAs and we can also work out the best way to upload sensitive or extra large files At the conference itself you should expect the interpreters to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start so if you are providing the technical equipment directly make sure your supplier has everything ready for testing at this stage You can also use this opportunity to let the interpreters know any changes or important updates often for large meetings there will be a liaison interpreter to act as main link between you and the interpreters so you just need to speak to them and they will do the rest And while interpreters are talented they can only interpret what they can clearly hear Prior to the meeting you need to make sure that the sound level is clear that everyone has a clear view of the screen and provide wi fi
