    clients the industry is changing and we need to demonstrate to clients that we are a partner and valued service provider to them not just a transactional relationship from the past To enable us to do this we need to have meaningful conversations with clients to truly understand their talent needs not just now as we work on a job for them but their future plans their business growth plans and the employee structure needed to fulfil this Getting a true grasp of their business will allow us to continually provide the best service to our clients and show the value of the partnership James Osborne Chief Executive Officer What are the biggest challenges that recruitment companies face when trying to grow their businesses Whilst there are a number of elements that recruitment organisations need to remain focused upon during periods of growth the key areas of challenge centre around focus control and discipline With the markets as they are at the moment creating significant opportunities for growth it is imperative for recruitment organisations to remain focused on their core offering their core markets and their core business strategy It is easy to get side tracked over excited about chasing opportunities when existing plans have yet to be fully exploited For example account penetration should come before new account development and market penetration should come before new market targeting As an organisation the business needs to be organised and disciplined to achieve maximum efficiency and profitability with what they have in place and what they are focused on This means measuring everything that they are doing to ensure that every component of the business is geared up for growth and producing substantial returns on investment and this in turn creates triggers for further growth in the future such as new hires new markets new offices and so on Recruitment business leaders need to be clear about the overarching strategy and this information needs to be disseminated measured and reported on across the rest of the business Managers consultants and all support staff must remain focused on achieving the individual milestones along that journey and nothing else until the results have been surpassed Business leaders should be asking themselves questions about what is currently going on in their businesses before asking what else could we be doing such as Is my internal recruitment strategy as effective as it should be and do we have a committed focus in place to ensure we can continue finding the best talent in the marketplace to support our growth plans Are we engaging with and motivating our employees to enable them to exercise their true potential or do we have a number of people within the business who are still disengaged Are we locking in and expanding business opportunities within our existing customer base or do we focus on new business to the detriment of our existing relationships Is our brand well known in the client and candidate market pools we are working in or

    dive alone and always have a buddy with you This same rule applies to business leaders you should always have buddies A study by the Kauffman Foundation in the US highlighted the fact that businesses that openly share their experiences with other organisations do better than those that don t The whole essence of the Elite Leaders programme that we run is getting owners of recruitment organisations to dedicate quality time every month to do just that To challenge each other s thinking to prevent each other from making similar mistakes that they have already made in the past and to create solutions for some of the issues that each of them face Don t be afraid to share insights and issues with your fellow business owners aka competition the market is big enough for everyone and collaboration with one or two will give you a significant competitive edge over the masses Pre Dive Checks Before every dive I have ever done I recount the mnemonic BWRAF for those who are interested this stands for Buoyancy Weights Releases Air Final which is a simple way to cross check with my buddy that both my equipment and I are ready for the dive Taking time out regularly to pause and check your business is fit for purpose enables business leaders to eliminate pockets of underperformance and inefficiency within the business whether it is people processes or systems At monthly board meetings for example we like to look at things like Account Penetration Profitability per Consultant Market Share Vs Market Opportunities Employee Engagement Customer Advocacy Systems Usage and ROI Customer Retention and so on Check your Air Diving is a very safe activity providing you follow the guidelines and monitor your air as you go to ensure you never get close to running out Keeping a close eye on the various metrics that surround your business will ensure you stay on top of your game When data starts suggesting possible issues around the corner see this as a warning sign and do something about it before the issue becomes too big Problems such as underperformance sales famines employee disengagement can all be identified in their early stages if you are monitoring the right metrics in your business Go with the Flow One of my favourite types of dive is what we refer to as a drift dive where you float along underwater with the current SCUBA diving is not a fast paced sport but a leisurely recreation and drift diving is that at its best In business there is a perception that unless we are seen to being busy running around frantically trying to keep up with our to do lists and flat out all the time then we are not putting enough effort in and yet many of the reasons why we are so frantic is because we haven t taken the appropriate action in the first place and hence have created unnecessary situations to be resolved Business leaders who slow
