  • middle of what resembles an abandoned brave heart set with two complete strangers and a blind man Who for trampling eight miles on a bike is nae bother Is it always this freezing cold here And why are these dogs disobeying commands not to eat our chicken sandwiches After lunch and with breathing almost under control 36 year old registered blinker and confirmed mentalist Dean Dunbar then shows us how to mind map a frosty waterfall for a future climb Dean has a rare condition known as rod and cone dystrophy which he s had since the age of nine It s difficult for Dean to explain but basically he can only make out shapes in 1996 a doctor told him he would be completely blind by the end of the year so he needed to learn Braille and get a guide dog but Dean s still clinging to what little sight he s got left And before he does see completely as a bat Dean s adopted a life mission to try everything possible in extreme sports For Dean like us a bike ride is radical thing to do yet his eyes were streaming afterwards because to close them for a second would be fatal Visibly shaking with fear and excitement his eyes were massive and he was smiling like an 80 s acid freak Dean said It all started when someone was doing a parachute jump and I thought it would be a great idea I had to do a tandem skydive because of my eyesight which I wasn t very happy about but it was still amazing when I hit the ground the adrenalin was going so high I thought I ve got to do more of this So he and wife Rhona gave up their jobs sold Rhona s home and used the money to fund a trip through Nepal Thailand Australia New Zealand Tahiti and Chile along the way they tried the most shit pushing high octane experiences known to man The 400 metre helicopter bungee jump I wouldn t do again because it scared the hell out of me You re sat on the edge of the helicopter at the time I weighed about 60 kilos but the rope itself was well over 70 so the rope I was attached to was heavier than I was and as soon as the chopper was off the ground the weight was pulling me out of it and I m thinking if I drop and we don t get up high enough then I m going to go splat Then when I jumped I remember looking at my feet expecting to see sky it was the wrong colour it was green and brown and I realized that I was the wrong way up so I was going feet first towards the ground at the last second I did a back flip and pointed myself in the right direction just at the right time Otherwise I was probably

  • that despite what life throws at us there is always fun to be had Read on in disbelief How did you get in to extreme sports It all started with a tandem skydive I was working at the local blind school and we needed a new camcorder I had the idea of doing a tandem skydive and getting people to sponsor me By the time I hit the ground I was hooked and I d raised the money for the blind school What s your greatest achievement My biggest achievement so far is to be the person who introduced River Bugs a cross between a white water raft and an armchair to the Northern Hemisphere from New Zealand I brought 10 over and sold 8 of these to Nae Limits in Scotland and kept 2 for Rhona and I to play with Who s the most inspiring person you ve met Eric Jones the extreme sports pioneer He s amazing at 61 base jumping off the angel falls He inspires me and he s a really nice guy Any sports you haven t done base jumping for obvious reasons although I d like to as well as street luge and kite surfing When they invent a tandem base jump I ll be first in the queue Being registered blind a lot of companies don t want to take the risk with you Does Rhona your wife have any fears for your safety Yes she does She also knows that she can t say no as I d do it anyway She is very supportive of everything I do and she always accompanies me Rhona is also a doctor which makes me feel a lot more at ease in case anything did go wrong Rhona and I do a lot of

  • I m going to live the life I want to for as long as I can he said I really enjoy extreme sports and get a lot out of them When people tell me I can t do something because of my vision then it makes me all the more determined to do it to prove them wrong Some people believe that because of their personal circumstances that these sports are out of reach I want to prove that a lot of the time this is not the case If you really want to do it often the only thing holding you back is yourself Dean was born in Edinburgh in 1969 with no apparent sight problems At the age of six he moved to the outskirts of Glasgow and he says climbed trees chased girls and did all the normal things expected of a boy of his age It was only after the family moved to Newcastle three years later that Dean first began to encounter difficulties with his vision His eyesight suffered an overnight deterioration and from that point on was registered as partially sighted For the next 18 years Dean s level of vision remained relatively steady as doctors and consultants struggled with various diagnoses and prognoses for the condition Then in 1996 his sight dropped suddenly and severely with Dean advised to start learning Braille and get himself a guide dog His condition was diagnosed as Rod Cone Dystrophy a general term for a number of eye conditions which affect light and dark perception Doctors initially warned Dean that any remaining sight he had would be gone within a year This meant he had to make a major decision about his future should he sit back at home and wallow in self pity or should he get out there to make the most of life sight or no sight It was a massive moment for me but one to which there was really only one answer I had to get out there I had to try as many exciting things as possible The first time I tried out an extreme sport was 1998 when I did a tandem sky dive and I was instantly hooked on the adrenalin rush Before I did it people were telling me I couldn t do it because of my sight but guess what I did it Since then I have been told I cant do certain activities on numerous occasions and each time it makes me more determined to keep on going I ve been knocked back for three different things this year because the companies concerned say their insurance wont cover a blind person One day my sight will deteriorate so I have light and dark perception only but until that happens I m going to keep on going and do and see as much as I can The sports Dean has tried vary from snowboarding to bungee jumping Royal Marine Assault Course to white water sledging He knows

  • lot of people use their boards to ride down grassy hills sometimes jumping over rocks and ramps says Dean But he chooses to board on snow and sand When the wind is strong enough a few of us can be found doing ridiculous speeds along our local beaches I have someone close in front of me on their board who I follow or someone will shout out directions to me he says Although this works most of the time Dean can end up a bit battered and bruised But this shouldn t deter you Dean thinks anyone who wants to try an extreme sport can and should but they must be honest about their needs Any decent company that provides the opportunity to take part in extreme sports should be able to make adjustments to help you take part he says For some the inspiration comes not from the net but from the TV From teh first time he saw Jacques Cousteau diving on his television show Michael McKeller aka Extreme Mike 36 knew he wanted to take up scuba diving I wanted to see the world he experienced says Mike from Georgia America But this wasn t going to be easy as Mike who has spinal muscular atrophy had a small obstacle to overcome a fear of water I had a lot of fear but I fought through it and got my diver s cerificate in 1995 he says He still has problems handling himself in tough conditions and always has at least two dive buddies with him to make sure he is safe Before he attempts a new sport Mike draws up a list of questions that help him decide whether it is right for him and encourages everyone to do the same I do a thorough evaluation of the risks and how they can be avoided I then ensure that I have a fun and safe time Like Dean Mike has a website documenting his exploits But he has gone one step further He is planning a video series which he wants to be broadcast by local television in the States He has made a pilot episode which shows him preparing for a tandem sky dive from 13 500 feet travelling through the sky at 120 miles an hour In the pipeline are shows on land sailing hang gliding driving a racing car rock climbing and more Mike came up with the idea for the show to inspire others to confront their fears and try something new If I can do it then the viewer can too he says Someone else who accepts no limits and whose motto is dive into life head first kick butt and ask questions later is 26 year old snowboarder Lucas Grossi from Jackson Hole Wyoming Lucas was a keen skateboarder from an early age with his house boasting th only half pipe skateboarding ramp in the neighbourhood He lost his left leg below the knee in a car crash when he
