  • News: 232,000 new jobs in the construction industry by 2021
    for the next five years creating some 232 000 additional jobs This growth will be spread around the nations and regions of the UK The most significant growth is predicted in Wales where 7 1 annual growth is forecast England is set to enjoy a 2 5 expansion each year while Scotland lags behind with just 0 5 annual growth Across the UK as a whole the figure is 2 5 with expansion being driven by the infrastructure and private housing sectors According to the report this compares favourably with the pre recessionary growth period 1995 to 2007 when it averaged 2 1 a year The report also says that while construction output growth slowed in 2015 from its very strong rate in 2014 it is expected that analysis will reveal growth of around 3 5 for last year taking its level up to around 98 of the 2007 peak New nuclear power stations at Hinkley Point and Wylfa alongside rail projects such as Crossrail and HS2 are expected to drive year on year infrastructure growth of 6 1 over the next five years The commercial construction sector will experience growth of 3 4 per annum while private housebuilding will also experience sustained growth across the forecast period Output in the housebuilding is expected return to pre recession levels by the end of the forecast period reaching 26bn by 2020 Discussing the research CITB policy director Steve Radley said All types of training and especially apprenticeships will be vital to delivering this pipeline of work This positive forecast should inspire more people to start apprenticeships and more firms to take them on He added We can t build the Britain we want without growing apprenticeships and the careers they lead onto That s why it is vital that these new

  • News: Construction wages soar in the wake of skills shortages
    Email this article Construction workers saw their wages rise well above the national average towards the end of last year according to new figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors RICS According to their research employees in the sector enjoyed a 6 rise in earnings compared to an average wage increase of just 2 across the rest of the country RICS believes one of the factors driving construction wage rises could be a lack of skilled workers in the industry after its UK Construction Market Survey for Q4 2015 revealed that 66 of construction professionals said that skills shortages had acted as a check on growth between October and December 2015 Among the most sought after members of staff in the period were bricklayers and quantity surveyors In the poll 62 and 60 of respondents said they had encountered difficulties hiring these workers respectively These skills shortages meant that the majority of construction professionals 61 saw an increase in their earnings during Q4 The survey also found that optimism in the sector remained high even though some respondents had concerns about financing Just under half of respondents 45 said they were hopeful of seeing an increase in profits over
