into a very good position allowing us to get a wonderful close up view In one group were the females and several very young cubs The male remained aloof on some other rocks nearby This put into sharp perspective the BBC wildlife film we had all agreed to see at the Serengeti visitor centre the previous day The panorama that faces you when you first see Ngorongoro On the way to our campsite perched on the rim of the crater some 700 metres above the crater floor we stopped to see another show put on by a local Maasai village These villages are really just large families with one man at the head The head of this particular village had eight or nine wives he couldn t quite remember around 31 children and already quite a few grand children They took our money and took us into their homes and gave us an exceptional glimpse into the lives of these shy and very traditionalist people They still very much resist the influences of modern life although already nearly half follow the Christian religion as opposed to their beliefs about the spirit world where there is no evil They also sung and jumped high for us and showed tremendously peaceful tolerance toward people from an alien world The Ngorongoro crater is a spectacular bowl some 20 kilometres across The flat crater floor with its sharply rising volcanic walls provides a safe haven for the animals and a dramatic theatre for photography In the last days before some much needed rain the steep sides of the crater seemed always to be darkened by clouds whilst the floor still basked in sunlight We were exceptionally fortunate to see at very close quarters a female black rhino and her young female crossing the track nearby and later two leopards fighting for fresh prey in the branches of a tree The next day we drove back to Arusha the region s capital where we were based for the fortnight A night in a hotel enabled the dirt from the dusty week to be removed a free morning to relax and prepare for the following week We then drove to the Marangu Hotel from where our mountain safari was organised Our briefing in the evening after a comprehensive equipment check was to prepare us for the long and arduous walk up the mountain The worst problem encountered when walking the Coca Cola Marangu route is altitude sickness as the routes are clear and the paths well established One controversial solution is the drug Diamox but the most important thing is to maintain a slow pace up the mountain from the first day Polé polé slowly slowly the guides would say to us There is no hurry in Africa Even the most experienced Fell walker in the group was convinced The Ordnance Survey map of Mount Kilimanjaro From the Park Gate where we had to register at 1800 metres the first days walk took us up to
