  • Fire safety and winter solstice celebrations
planning because any kind of fire brings with it the risk of injury or worse From Brighton to Aberdeen between now and January 6th people will be using fire and smoke to mark milestones in the passing year For some these are rites rooted firmly in our pagan past for others they re a new phenomenon but whatever their age they draw people together to be enchanted by the unceasingly hypnotic glow of flame and the crackle of fire Brighton begins the festivities at the end of December 21st the shortest day with Burning the Clocks the newest winter solstice fire ceremony and the only one taking place on that day Illuminated lanterns are taken to the beach where they are added to a bonfire before a firework show The event is in its 21st year but now regularly attracts more than 20 000 spectators Much older and taking place on New Year s Eve are the Allendale Tar Barl Festival in Northumberland and the Stonehaven Fireballs event near Aberdeen The former involves 45 brave souls carrying whisky barrels of burning tar on their heads in a flame lit parade through the town Dressed in ceremonial costume the barrel carriers are called guisers and the right to be one is guarded jealously and handed down through families This ritual is said to have been in existence since the dark ages and ends with the barrels making a bonfire North of the border on Hogmanay revellers have been getting even more enthusiastic with fire The 150 year old ceremony at Stonehaven said never to have been halted for anything including the fierce Scots weather also draws crowds of thousands The ceremony begins at midnight when a pipe band leads kilt clad fire dancers through the streets Their role is to whirl baskets of fire around their heads showering sparks in every direction as they make their way to the town s harbour for a firework display And on January 6th the Haxey Hood brings fire and smoke closest to an individual with the ceremony of Smoking The Fool one of the brightly clad officials of a fairly rule free football game His wreathing in clouds of smoke heralds the start of hours of pushing and shoving as scores of participants attempt to push a mass of bodies called the sway to their own chosen pub to deliver to its landlord the Hood a leather cylinder which will be held aloft in victory and stay there for the whole year Carry out a fire risk assessment They re all laudable traditions and much appreciated in the communities where they take place but with so much potential for injury the health and safety dimension must never be underestimated Organisers of events like these are alive to the risks but they can be overlooked by individuals who don t do a fire risk assessment before lighting bonfires lanterns and fireworks Stay fire safe at your winter solstice celebration So what can you do stay

  • Staying safe with the help of Electrical Fire Safety Week | Fire and Safety Centre
to achieve the same effect It was only when he called to his mother Can I turn this blanket over it s nice and brown on this side now that she was alerted to the danger and bounded downstairs from some household chore to find out what was going on My friend had come within a whisker of being a victim of exactly the kind of danger that Electrical Fire Safety Week running from November 9th 15th this year has been designed to highlight Although the week has been running since 2012 half a century after my friend s brush with disaster the message still hasn t hit home People still die in fires caused by electrical heaters the largest single cause of death and injury with the elderly and the very young most at risk There s a danger that it will get worse say Fire Service experts as people struggle with heating bills and may resort to small heaters to plug the cost heat gap Three basic misconceptions put people at risk That it s safe to leave heaters switched on and unattended That they can be left on to keep elderly and immobile relatives warm That it s OK to leave them switched on all night None of those is OK to do say experts Their message is simple if you must use a portable electric heater it needs to have someone keeping an eye on it at all times Never let it get too close to anything which can burn and turn it off if you leave it That way you can be assured of being warm AND safe The elderly often unsteady on their legs face another threat too that of tripping over trailing cables which could be compounded in its severity if they fall onto the heater or pull it too close to flammable material Picture Martin Green via Dreamstime The other electrical danger It s not just electric heaters that pose a threat In any context misuse of electricity can have disastrous consequences and it s at this time of year that they can start to be felt More and more electrical appliances are becoming increasingly common in homes up and down the country which is not a problem if the homes they re going into have sufficient electrical sockets Where they don t it s common to see adaptors put together in more and more unlikely combinations to make sure things like the TV Sky box X box and phone charger are all supplied And that s where the danger arises In trying to feed a number of appliances through one socket electricity will cause socket and plugs to overheat The sockets in your home have a maximum load measured in amps All appliances require a certain amount of power and the number of them plugged in to one socket at any one time should never exceed that load The Socket Calculator has been brought to you by Electrical Safety First For

  • Make Halloween fun by steering clear of risk of fire from clothing
s 0 00 ex VAT 0 00 inc VAT Tweet How to save your family from a Halloween fire nightmare like Claudia s October 19 2015 Last year Claudia Winkleman s daughter was badly burned when her Halloween fancy dress costume caught fire Fire and Safety Centre suggests how you can keep your own family safe by taking one simple precaution making sure those dressing up outfits don t have a trick up their sleeves This Halloween will be considerably less frightening for families throughout the UK thanks to TV personality Claudia Winkleman She has successfully campaigned for improved safety standards for Halloween dressing up costumes worn by children after the one her daughter Matilda wore last year caused severe burns when she was engulfed in flames when a candle flame touched the fabric She believes it was a gap in the legislation that caused the problem allowing dressing up clothes to be classified in the same way from a fire safety point of view as toys But as Claudia pointed out there was a massive difference toys can be dropped but burning clothes cannot illustrated graphically when the fabric of a pair of tights melted on to her daughter s skin Claudia told the BBC s Watchdog consumer programme I would like parents on Halloween just to think about what they re going to put their kids in because I didn t and it cost us It s not a toy because you wear it next to bare skin If she d been holding a broomstick which is a toy we could have chucked that but we couldn t put her out fast enough Government s fire safety response Only last month Business Secretary Sajid Javid ordered a nationwide investigation into the safety of fancy dress costumes which means Trading Standards officials will do spot checks nationwide At the same time the Department for Business Innovation and Skills is working with the British Standards Institute to decide if European standards need to be toughened up Results of Trading Standards investigations will help inform that decision Mr Javid said My immediate concern as a father and a minister is that children wearing these fancy dress costumes are safe It is unacceptable for any costumes to be sold that do not comply with safety standards That s why I ve granted funding to Trading Standards to carry out spot checks as part of a nationwide investigation Parents should feel confident that any fancy dress they buy meets required standards National Burn Awareness Day The Government is also supporting the second annual National Burn Awareness Day taking place on October 21st and organised by the Children s Burns Trust supported by the Fire Kills campaign and the Chief Fire Officers Association Best advice Be your own fire safety officer The best way for your family to avoid the distress caused by a fire safety accident like the Winklemans is to be your own fire safety officer No matter how much peer pressure

  • Fire Extinguishers - Fire and Safety Centre Articles
a barrel containing fire extinguishing liquid within which was a pewter chamber of gunpowder To put out a fire the gunpowder was ignited and the resultant explosion scattered the barrel s contents over the fire The perils and pitfalls of barely controlled explosions when there s already a fire are easy to see particularly when burning liquids are involved Explosions are very likely to make matters considerably worse apart from the collateral damage by spreading the burning liquid and therefore the fire over a much larger area Evolving chemistry But thanks to ingenious chemists like Godfrey fire extinguishers have evolved so that there s a much more effective way to control fires involving burning cooking oil and fat in kitchens They re called Class F fires and the effective weapon against them is the wet chemical fire extinguisher characterized by its yellow panel bearing the words wet chemical in red It s the newest of the fire extinguishers available having been developed only in 2000 Look out for the British Standard BS 7937 2000 for the fire extinguishers themselves and BS 5306 2000 for their selection and installation Science shared with soap making Perhaps bizarrely the chemistry involved in putting out a fire with a wet chemical fire extinguisher is the same as that used in soap making It s called saponification Saponification is the name of a chemical reaction involving a strong alkali usually a potassium based salt with the oil which it converts into a soft soapy mixture of hydrolysed acid and alcohol This covers the surface of the burning oil starving the fire of oxygen and putting it out The added benefit is that the reaction draws heat from the oil which cools it Because the surface of the oil or fat is covered and the temperature has been reduced there is no danger of the fire re igniting These fire extinguishers are invaluable for use in any commercial kitchen or food processing plant but can be just as effective on smaller fires in domestic premises and the leisure industry Their manufacture recognizes that all of these places are likely to have electrical equipment as well and so are fitted with non conductive lances to enable the chemical mixture to be applied to the fire safely without the risk of electrocuting the operator Our top tips for selecting and using a chemical fire extinguisher Selecting The chemicals in a wet chemical fire extinguisher can have a corrosive effect and are likely to have shortened lives if they re made only of mild steel Look for a polyethylene lining to protect the extinguisher body Using Discharge all of the extinguisher s contents as gently as you can onto the surface of the burning oil The fire may go out very quickly but could start again if you haven t made a sufficiently robust soapy chemical layer Important suitable for commercial kitchen fire safety These extinguishers are for use only for kitchen fire suppression when burning cooking oils and fats are involved They can t be used when the burning liquid is petrol or diesel fuel To protect your commercial property we recommend visiting our range of wet chemical extinguishers Comments 0 Foam fire extinguishers why they deliver concentrated fire fighting power January 13 2015 Foam fire fighting technology is now an effective and versatile option for use for a multitude of applications in your home and workplace We explain why When Flight 609 failed to take off from Munich Airport almost 60 years ago this February 6th it ploughed into a house ultimately killing 23 of its passengers But that was only half of the people aboard All might have died if a fire beneath the starboard wing had reached about 500 gallons of aviation fuel inside it This was the flight in which so many of the Busby Babes of Manchester United were killed and the flames under the wing which might ultimately have killed them all were fought by the aircraft s pilot using just two hand held fire extinguishers This incident highlights the way fire fighting techniques have developed over the years as part of on going efforts to make flying safer In 1959 the year after the Munich disaster there were 15 accidents per million flight hours In 2000 that figure had been reduced to just two That doesn t mean the problem has been cured however according to European flight safety initiative AircraftFire and the FAA over the last decade there have been 3 000 fire incidents on aircraft 40 of which involved fatalities The fire fighting contribution to that reduction is in part down to the development of Foam Fire Extinguisher or AFFF technology The use of foam fire extinguishers has grown since the technology is now available to much smaller users like you and I How does a foam fire extinguisher work It is extremely effective because of the clever way the ingredients in a foam fire extinguisher work together These are concentrated foam solution water and inert nitrogen which pressurises the extinguisher When the extinguisher is used the stored pressure drives out the foam solution which swirls around in the nozzle producing a fine spray of foam in a much larger volume than the extinguisher itself How does it work In two ways The foam seals the fire from its oxygen supply and secondly the moist foam cools the burning material The foam extinguisher colour is usually red with a cream label saying foam which conform to British Standard EN3 Stainless steel extinguishers are available for use in design led or clean environments but they will still have that cream label Beware older foam fire extinguishers aren t red but are completely cream These don t conform to the EN3 standard and ought to be replaced and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way Your fire extinguisher supplier should be able to do that for you Foam fire extinguisher facts Also called AFFF extinguishers which stands for Aqueous Film Forming
