    in typography signage information design and printing This in turn made him aware and later in awe of London Transport s Johnston typeface that he had been looking at during his formative years not realizing why it existed nor why it did its job so astonishingly well How could a typeface look so simple and work so very well Answer it is not simple because Edward Johnston worked so hard and did such a terrific job of fooling us into making it look simple London Transport He looked after the London Underground map diagram through much of the 1980s and when London Buses embarked on a far reaching review and major expansion of its passenger information and wayfinding products they came to him at FWT It was at this time he and information designer Elaine Chambers met For the next four or so years he worked very closely on evolving the All London bus map into local area guides and bus shelter map posters working out the optimum way to divide London up for users and as a cost effective rollout Soon after this he was centrally involved with the inception design and initial production of the trials named Victoria Corridor with LT s design directorate and executive directors especially Norman Cohen now retired Following this Elaine and he devised and designed the now commonplace spider posters and multi route bus corridor panels When cycling became a major initiative some years later Doug devised the optimum configuration to cover London in the now range of 14 guides Outside of London Doug has devised and implemented signage and wayfinding at about 30 UK bus stations and city centres including the touch screen displays at Wolverhampton bus station Other major projects include schemes in Birmingham Derby Leicester Southend and Warrington The Railways

    University of Aston in Birmingham Having chosen his degree course by virtue of the accompanying picture of a West Midlands Travel bus in the prospectus a subsequent rather eye opening induction to the passenger transport industry courtesy of two less than sparkling London bus operators almost put the brakes on a lifelong career ambition So Robin first really made his mark in the industry by writing about it as deputy editor of revered and much missed business publication Transit in those distant pre Twitter days when managing directors eagerly awaited their fortnightly copy on the doormat to find out the latest in the bus rail and light rail sectors After six enjoyable years Robin then returned to the sharp end as Commercial Manager for ground breaking rural independent bus operator Norfolk Green Already known for good reliable affordable operation Robin was brought in to market and promote the business through innovative fares offers and original marketing techniques including a proportionally large spend on commercial radio advertising Huge brand loyalty and growth saw the acquisition of First s local bus operation in 2011 after six years of cut throat competition as well as becoming the only independent operator ever to be crowned UK Bus Operator of the Year in 2010 A year s break for him and his partner to buy and develop a catering business in Norfolk has now ended with his appointment as FWT Commercial Manager with a specific remit to develop new products and services using TransXChange data and digital technologies to support FWT s traditional mapping and passenger information activities and to an equally high standard for our clients One part of this role is to assume responsibility for delivering passenger information to over 500 bus stops in Norfolk including those he managed whilst at Norfolk Green

  • Mike Greenwood
    clients face and he is able to offer options and solutions drawing on his knowledge of the extensive FWT product range In 1983 Mike moved to South Yorkshire PTE as Information Officer His prime responsibility was managing all the public information functions for a large Passenger Transport Executive which through its unique low fares policy increased patronage of its services dramatically At deregulation in 1986 Mike became Customer Services Manager for the bus operating company South Yorkshire Transport His responsibilities included overseeing the efficient production of bus service information management of SYT s four travel enquiry shops and responding to passenger complaints on bus service matters He was also responsible for setting up a telephone enquiry service and a revenue protection squad In total Mike had 25 staff reporting to him Mike also worked closely with SYT s Marketing Manager These were challenging times as the cheap fare policy was abandoned and a significant amount of patronage and service reduction had to be carefully managed In April 1988 Mike joined FWT His many years in the public transport industry help him to fully understand the challenges that clients face Mike is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport He serves on the Information Ticketing Executive in his Associate Member role of ATCO Away from the workplace Mike is heavily involved in transport history He is a Director of a Leicester Transport Heritage Trust where he looks after archive and marketing matters He has written several historical reference books on the bus industry and is a member of a number of learned transport associations He particularly enjoys the social history aspect of transport In complete contrast to old transport Mike also enjoys motorsport both domestically and internationally with a particular preference for American motorsport He is an accomplished

    consultant except for three years when in 1989 he was appointed as Chief Executive of the London River Bus Service This was during the period leading up to the completion of the first phase of the Canary Wharf Development in London Docklands in 1991 During the 1990s Peter assisted FWT to work with the large UK Bus Groups to introduce stop specific bus stop information using automated database publishing methods This led to the development of a website for UK Bus First Group and acquiring the PTI Website which in the late 1990s provided the first public index to all bus operators websites in the UK This site was eventually sold by FWT to a consortium of major bus operators and became the predecessor of the Traveline and Transport Direct web sites initiated by the DfT by 2000 From 1998 he was conducting travel information audits for Passenger Transport Executives such as Great Manchester and West Midlands Centro as well as other local authorities These led to Peter producing detailed public transport information strategies FWT were then commissioned to implement some of these which involved new designs for county wide roadside information programmes way finding schemes and improved static information at transport interchanges He assisted FWT s parent company Cook Hammond Kell in the early market research in the USA leading to the successful formation of CHK America He worked on some of the latter s early projects in Santa Barbara Austin Texas and for the Chicago Transit Authority In 2007 this led to working with CHK America on an international study of best practice methods for the display of public transport information and way finding signage Some of the cities he examined included London Paris Singapore Sydney and Christchurch New Zealand Since 2003 he has assisted various UK Transport

    Graphic Design Exeter College of Art Design Following an audit of on street information the London Buses project involved the design of a new identity style and content for all publicity material This was applied to major interchange sites bus stations and individual bus stops The range of products included bus stop flags informational posters and panels timetables including stop specific interchange information signage and wayfinding It was during this project that she and Doug met and first worked together Since joining FWT among others Elaine has been at the centre of projects for Transport for London First Group Nottingham City Transport NCT Centro West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District SBMTD Chicago Regional Transportation Authority RTA Austin Texas Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority CMTA Elaine has experience with all stages of a project from the initial discovery phase and liaising with the client right through to the creative development and implementation Learning about the specific problem by undertaking a thorough investigation leads her to design solutions that support the goals of the client and the end user The defining and shaping of raw data based on real facts result in a clear accurate and aesthetic outcome Experience has shown that success requires each project be approached with a fresh eye and with no preconceived ideas In a world of information overload Elaine has an ability to stay focused on what is important Elaine lives in Brighton with her husband and enjoys life in the city centre with music venues and theatres close to home She is very keen on sport including boxing training running completed first full marathon in April 2011 and yoga A sunny climate not too far away is preferred for a getaway with a quiet beach a pile of books and good food she
