  • Acetylene training
The new Acetylene Regulations place a requirement for operators to ensure that the gas control equipment being used on acetylene equipment is designed for acetylene use Our oxy acetylene training workshop explains how flashbacks can occur when operators are using oxy fuel gas equipment and now in line with the new regulations instructs operators to fit flashback arrestors to acetylene systems Over the past couple of years acetylene has received some negative press This has mainly been driven by the protocols used by the Fire and Rescue Service to deal with incidents involving acetylene cylinders whereby cylinders were cooled for 24 hours before being moved Recent research undertaken by the British Compressed Gases Association and other parties has resulted in a new method of dealing with acetylene cylinder fires now the cylinders are cooled for one hour and then monitored for a further hour before being moved It s essential that operators and management are aware of this new procedure At Gas Safe we constantly update our acetylene safety training materials and have recently modified all of our oxy acetylene training workshops to reflect this new protocol Acetylene training is required for personnel who use the gas in any environment

The first shows a road traffic incident and illustrates how easy it is for an accident to occur with gases and when it does how quickly if get totally out of control The second video focuses on oxygen depletion the effect on the human body and the steps that need to be taken to ensure that operators are working in a safe atmosphere Here are Bob s comments on the projects When Terry briefed me for these two productions he started by making the actual presentations to me I then tried to capture the immediacy of that in a script for our favourite voice over artist Phil Hayward to record As a video and animation producer I am constantly looking for new techniques to enable clear communication in training workshops The Gas Safe productions use a style I call Hands On which uses every piece of software I have but most of all my hands My hands draw cartoons and write text onto a large virtual white board combining these with photos video and 3 D animation to make an entertaining program that holds the attention and really communicates At the end of the footage the camera pulls back to reveal the whole workspace so all the images appear together It s a powerful ending and makes a really useful discussion piece in a training situation These Hands On video productions utilise all my skills as a cartoonist animator videographer and editor ヨ using programs such as 3 D Studio MAX Flash Xara Painter Sony Vegas Pro ヨ and they re a lot of fun to make which really comes across in the finished productions Bob Banks has run Animation Studio Ltd for over 25 years with work appearing on BBC ITV and SKY as well as working for many
