city power stations in various stages of decay The results are striking and poignant at once both edgy in their contemporary aesthetic and nostalgic in their ruinous beauty The work is underscored by the potential controversy of gaining unlicensed access to the out of bounds areas Every image is a product of a journey referring both to the physical demands of gaining entry and to the passing of time which is evident in the abandoned locations Like the Romantic poets before her Soden offers room to reflect on more romantic notions of beauty and a sense of calmness despite collapse and structural devastation In 2015 Soden exhibited alongside Natasha Kissell in a show entitled Falls The Shadow exhibiting her newly released series Palac She took part in the show Filling the Void at the K35 Gallery in Moscow exhibiting works from the Retrogression series Once again she exhibited brand new works in the April and October editions of The Other Art Fair with her work finding it s way into special collections In 2014 Soden won The Naylor Award 1st prize for the Finest Photograph in The National Open Art Competition and appeared on BBC1 in a programme following the competition She has taken part in group and solo shows and has shown her work at The Other Art Fair for a second year running which proved to highly successful In 2013 Soden s work was shown at Pulse New York London Art Fair Art13 Fair and she was awarded Finest Work on Show at The Photo Art Fair in London At the end of the year Soden was awarded Emerging Artist of the Year in The National Open Art Competition In 2012 Soden s work was acquired by The Groucho Club one of the most respected private members clubs

functional purpose such as hospitals casinos and summer camps but also exhibit a grandness of architecture which is largely absent in the contemporary world Each of these locations across Italy Austria Romania Germany France and at home in the UK is lovingly researched and carefully discovered by Gina The stage of neglect is incremental across them all hence the series title Nature continues to be a huge source of fascination and Gina has developed her characteristic single point perspective with a richer deeper colour palette in some works Palac Palac Series 2015 In 2014 Gina undertook a massive pilgrimage to seek out abandoned palaces across Europe including Poland Italy France and the Czech Republic From private devotional spaces to architectural displays of power and grandeur the series echoes the epic political social cultural and religious developments across Europe in the last two centuries The spaces speak only quietly of their former grandeur the resounding impression is now of faded glory and diminished prestige However the diversity and opulence of architectural styles across Europe shines through Feuillage Grand Piano Klasztor Le Magnat Medieval Muqarnas Royalty Tapis Rouge Bramy Oculus Emergence Emergence Series 2014 Emergence is a series in which Gina Soden explores the delicate balancing act in her artistic process Her photographs are at once documents of time passing and presenting places the viewer cannot otherwise access whilst at the same time they are works of the imagination providing beguiling glimpses to tantalise the viewer They have to be part record and part invention The series captured across Europe includes more objects in detail than before such as the cinematic piano the neglected car and industrial motifs Castle Piano Eglise Frieden Jaguar Klinik Krankenhaus Pressure Reggia Scroll Synagogue Decadenza Decadenza Series 2013 Gina Soden s follow up to Retrogression was Decadenza

  • Kaleidoscope – New Series for Gina Soden in 2016 | Gina Soden Artist
signals a departure for Soden since her normal practice is to show a situation in its whole so much so that we feel we were there with her on the discovery In these prints our position is completely different instead we are plunged in to the middle of something and have to work backwards to orientate ourselves They demand endless enquiry and searching for forms However different the visual effect the series is born from the same love of symmetry which is at the heart of the earlier series Retrogression 2012 Decadenza 2013 Emergence 2014 Palac 2015 There is a fascinating duality at play in Kaleidoscope between the organic and the geometric There is absolute order and clarity but at the same time there is a quiet energy between the spaces a quality of light that buzzes and tiny hints of decay and ruin amidst the endlessly reflecting forms It is a game between the real and the imagined we are given plenty of clues as to the individual motifs that make up the whole but also the freedom to invent our own details and chart our own visual pathway Part sci fi part baroque part ecclesiastical the series is a beautifully woven tapestry of colour line form and above all a declaration of the artist s passion for symmetry The nineteenth century word Kaleidoscope takes its form from Greek Kalos beautiful and eidos shape and literally means observer of beautiful forms For years Soden has found beauty in places others might recoil from and she has constantly charted new territory to seek out long neglected structures in Europe She is indeed an observer of beautiful forms and in this series the viewer bears witness to that in an entirely new way Digital Archival Prints 60 x 60 cm on
