    for household claims PPI Advice As with any financial product the banks should have ensured proper advice was given to their clients on whether or not PPI was suitable for them But sales staff were often highly incentivised to sell as many policies as possible If proper PPI advice wasn t given the policy was mis sold as suitability should have been taken into account at the point of sale Pressure Pressure selling techniques were often used to persuade customers by playing on their fears of what might have happened in the future Some banks led customers to believe it was a compulsory product and was required in order for them to take out the loan they wanted or that taking out a PPI policy would improve their chances of being accepted Some customers weren t even sold into taking out a policy the bank simply added it to their loan without even telling them On top of this they then charged interest on the up front premium for the length of the loan PPI added up front to a 10 000 loan could add 4 000 to the overall cost If it was taken as a single premium it would put the overall cost up to 16 000 Exclusions Exclusion clauses built into policies often made it impossible to make a PPI claim Sales staff were supposed to make people aware of what those exclusions are those in seasonal or part time work under 16 hours a week employed on a temporary or contract basis self employed aware of the possibility of redundancy in the future having a pre existing medical conditions suffering from stress or backache under 18 or over 65 Existing Cover Many sales staff failed to establish whether or not the customer already had cover in place for their credit repayments or if their employer s sick scheme would cover their payments without need for any insurance Policies have buffer periods of up to 90 days so the customer must be out of work for three months before any payments are made If it s only a short term absence the policy is useless Reclaiming PPI Payment protection insurance has become the biggest single financial scandal in British history The banks have already paid out more than 22 2bn on payment protection insurance claims and have earmarked another 7bn to pay future successful claims The UK s banking regulator is the Financial Conduct Authority who have become so concerned with the way the banks are investigating PPI claims that they have started a major inquiry into the high street banks to ensure they are following the regulations properly Further information on reclaiming PPI through a PPI claims company PPI Mis selling There are a number of ways in which a policy could have been mis sold Did the seller ask you questions about your age employment status or health Were your earnings while off sick guaranteed for six months or more Were any of the exclusion

    Back problems Diabetes Did you have any pre existing medical conditions Despite most insurers being cautious of granting policies to people with pre existing medical conditions many lenders sold PPI without even asking about medical history Worse some lenders are reported to have pressured customers into PPI policies by leveraging their pre existing conditions Unforgivably some advisors did this with full knowledge that the policy would later be void mis selling at its most deceitful Was I already covered Many lenders are guilty of overlooking or disregarding existing cover This means borrowers already had insurance or employment cover that would protect them in the event of sickness or unemployment This meant PPI was not necessary and therefore mis sold Did your lender check whether you had existing cover in place Start My PPI Claim Failing to explain cost Lenders are duty bound to make borrowers fully aware of the costs involved in buying a policy This is especially true with PPI where customers should understand the entirety of their monthly repayments including interest and how this is calculated Unfortunately many lenders did not fulfil this vital need leaving customers confused and more out of pocket than expected This is another form of mis selling which would now entitle you to a reclamation of all premiums paid on the PPI How does PPI pricing differ Single premium policies The most common types of mis sold PPI these policies are sold alongside loans and mortgages and borrowers must pay the full cost of the policy up front Here s an example On a loan for 5 000 your policy which costs 40 of the loan would cost an extra 2000 Remember that s 2 000 up front which you may have to loan as well Instead of only 5 000 you ve now got a 7 000 loan you re paying interest on Single premium policies are normally offered for five years and are paid off before your actual loan amount This extends the loan period so much that it actually risks extending beyond the policy period meaning you re no longer covered on what you re paying for Monthly premium policies Normally associated with credit cards these policies are commonly mis sold to borrowers who aren t even aware they ve bought them since they re hidden in terms conditions or included as an opt out component As with any policy circumstances and eligibility should be clarified with you before the product is sold Start My PPI Claim Dishonest selling A common practice of mis selling was leading borrowers to believe PPI was a compulsory addition to their loan which would be completely untrue Some lenders even told customers that PPI would improve their chances of loan approval or credit rating This is also untrue While these mistruths weren t always said explicitly clever wording was used to imply that no PPI would result in buyers loans not being approved Once again these are gross examples of mis selling which would
