Day Mark Ball Gary Watmough Leon Moye Stu Farley Courtney Riding and Cheryl Morris Yorke It was a real scorcher of a day for the Disability Awareness Paralympics at Victoria Park with the sun blazing down on the games which were the climax of months of special events in which staff from Gladstone Brookes and the Warrington Wolves Foundation brought disability awareness to schools throughout the Warrington area More than 150 children from three schools Meadowside Community Primary Green Lane Special School and Woolston Community Primary gathered in bright sunshine at Victoria Park arena for a day of Paralympic style sport Huge success Wolves Total Sport Co ordinator Craig Thomason said The Disability Awareness Day run by Gladstone Brookes and The Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation at Victoria Park was another huge success The GB staff have been working alongside the Foundation coaches for a number of months going into various schools to deliver a variety of inclusive sports The enthusiasm and commitment shown at these days has allowed the Team GB staff to gain all the experience they needed to successfully run the activities at this fantastic event The feedback from the schools has been brilliant the children had a great day and are already looking forward to next year Sports The schools taking part were Years 5 6 from Meadowside Years 5 9 from Green Lane and Years 4 5 6 from Woolston Community Primary School Sports played included blind football boccia archery try line tussle and seated volleyball Meadowside Year 6 were the winners of the seated volleyball tournament and received their gold winner s medals from Warrington Wolves first team players Joel and Michael Monaghan Praise Mike King PE Co ordinator at Green Lane Special School spoke for all three schools involved saying It was great to see our pupils fully integrating with children at other schools during the inclusive events The day was a great success and all the events were extremely well led by the Gladstone Brooks staff in no small part due to the work they had put in previously visiting the schools and building positive relationships with our children Wolves players Joel and Michael Monaghan pictured with some of the children The ever popular Wolfie surrounded by his fans Volunteers joining in the seated volleyball Craig Thomason starts a competitor on enjoyed their day Gary Watmough said There aren t many companies who give you the opportunity to have that much fun helping kids and team bonding at the same time We ll have a lot more volunteers after the stories I ve told the staff how great and eventful the day was If you have ever played blindfold football or one handed archery you will fully appreciate the difficulty and the skill that is required which mostly definitely raises disability awareness in sports Respect When you have a part of your body taken away and have to try and function as normal while performing everyday tasks it gives you an overwhelming respect for anyone with a disability Anyone who is disabled and continues to pursue a dream in sports is just phenomenal Callum Hewitt said It was a great day Every child and every adult was having fun and smiling The weather held out for us and everything was topped off by the Monaghan brothers turning up and handing out the medals in the seated volleyball tournament It was a pleasure to be part of and very rewarding to see how much the kids enjoyed themselves Great day Jayne Barnes said Another great day supporting our disability awareness project It s enjoyable showing the children how others who have less abilities are still able to enjoy sports and games with a little help from us I always learn so much on these days and it teaches you anything is possible whether you are fully able or have a disability Jack Day was involved in the blind football He said I enjoyed helping the children and it was nice to see the other side of Gladstone Brookes and the work they do in the community I really appreciate the opportunity and would love to do it again Great experience Jeni Davies is another who looks forward to doing it again next year She said It was a great experience and I would recommend it to others to try it It was nice to see how GB helps others with charity events Christopher McShane also recommends the experience He said The children were great to work with and the whole day was very well organised I got a huge amount out of it personally It s the first time I ve ever been involved with anything like this and it was great to see the children learning and having fun at the same time I learned a lot too and would 100 recommend it to other colleagues who haven t been involved yet What a scorcher Paul Speakman has attended several events in the past and enjoyed this one just as much Fantastic day again but now fighting off sunstroke what a scorcher Co organiser Stu Farley summed everything up when he said It was a brilliant event and the weather was kind to us The staff got stuck in and involved with all the activities and it was obvious from the laughter and smiles on the faces of the kids how
