  • Gladstone Brookes - Reflections……
ago and spoke to two schools but now the Manx government have invited me back to speak to many more of them He had further proof one day while enjoying a coffee in Starbucks He was approached by a woman who asked if he was Adrian Derbyshire When he confirmed he was the lady could not thank him enough Bullied He explains She said her teenage daughter had heard one of my talks a few weeks ago and it had completely changed her life Her mother had no idea she was being bullied to such an extent that she was considering harming herself but after hearing my talk the daughter plucked up the courage to tell her mum what was going on She told me It s changed her life completely It s quite something when someone says that to you and it tells me that the message is definitely getting through to those who need to hear it he said Back to school Adrian spent part of the school summer holiday on the health and well being section of the tour when he hand cycled along the south coast of England from Portsmouth to Land s End chatting to people along the way But now the kids are back to school and he is preparing his plans for the next phase of the tour I don t know how many miles I will have done by the time I finish but certainly over 2 000 plus with things like the English half marathon and lots of 5ks and charity events in between Worn out When I finished at Land s End I was knackered physically worn out by doing a marathon a day for 21 days I hadn t realised how much it would affect my disability and I ended up doubling my medication as the event wore on There were some amazing highs and horrible lows beautiful weather and torrential rain But that s all behind me now and as I m gearing up for the next segment of the tour which will see me making school visits right up until December 22nd Then I might have a bit of time off for Christmas before taking on the next project which might mean extending the campaign throughout 2015 Interest in what I am doing is continuing to grow and the tour might be going international next year I m already in talks with America Germany and France to take the message to them One of many eager audiences Fancy dress event Adrian explains what fencing did for him One on one tuition on how it all works Got there in the end Hanging with the St John ambulance crew This entry was posted in Going the Extra Mile Featured Videos Going the Extra Mile Heartbroken Adrian will carry on Adrian honoured by David Cameron What is a hate crime Contact Adrian GOING THE EXTRA MILE THE FIGHT AGAINST HATE CRIME Reflections A marathon a day for 21 days

  • Gladstone Brookes - A marathon a day for 21 days!
Bournemouth was the next stop on the route view here then Weymouth watch here and here Torquay St Austell Mevagissey watch here and here Falmouth Carbis Bay St Ives Almost There about to set off for Land s End arriving at Land s End and finally reflections on what he achieved during this physically taxing part of the tour I feel a real sense of achievement now this section is over A marathon a day for 21 days was a big target but I never had any doubt that I would get there I ve had a great time chatting to people along the way and getting my message across I ve also been travelling through some truly beautiful countryside among the best Britain has to offer But the weather has been brutal at times and some of those hills The Stop Hate Crime message is important but so is showing disabled people that their disability need not hold them back You can achieve great things if you put your mind to it and work at it When I woke up in hospital I had no idea what had happened to me It was a massive shock because I was left with stroke like symptoms and had to learn to speak and read and write again But I was determined I wasn t going to let it beat me and was lucky enough to find my way back through sport The Paralympic training camp I went on opened my eyes with the opportunities which are available to disabled people and I tried quite a few of them before settling on the fencing I was determined I was going to win and now I have the gold and silver medals to prove what is possible This entry was posted in Going

fantastic event The feedback from the schools has been brilliant the children had a great day and are already looking forward to next year Sports The schools taking part were Years 5 6 from Green Lane Special School spoke for all three schools involved saying It was great to see our pupils fully integrating with children at other schools during the inclusive events The day was a great success and all the events were extremely well led by the Gladstone Brooks staff in no small part due to the work they had put in previously visiting the schools and building positive relationships with our children Wolves players Joel and Michael Monaghan pictured with some of the children The ever popular Wolfie surrounded by his fans Volunteers joining in the seated volleyball Craig Thomason event all thoroughly enjoyed their day Gary Watmough said There aren t many companies who give you the opportunity to have that much fun helping kids and team bonding at the same time We ll have a lot more volunteers after the stories I ve told the staff how great and eventful the day was If you have ever played blindfold football or one handed archery you will fully appreciate the difficulty and the skill that is required which mostly definitely raises disability awareness in sports Respect When you have a part of your body taken away and have to try and function as normal while performing everyday tasks it gives you an overwhelming respect for anyone with a disability Anyone who is disabled and continues to pursue a dream in sports is just phenomenal Callum Hewitt said It was a great day Every child and every adult was having fun and smiling The weather held out for us and everything was topped off by the Monaghan brothers turning up and handing out the medals in the seated volleyball tournament It was a pleasure to be part of and very rewarding to see how much the kids enjoyed themselves Great day Jayne Barnes said Another great day supporting our disability awareness project It s enjoyable showing the children how others who have less abilities are still able to enjoy sports and games with a little help from us I always learn so much on these days and it teaches you anything is possible whether you are fully able or have a disability Jack Day was involved in the blind football He said I enjoyed helping the children and it was nice to see the other side of Gladstone Brookes and the work they do in the community I really appreciate the opportunity and would love to do it again Great experience Jeni Davies is another who looks forward to doing it again next year She said It was a great experience and I would recommend it to others to try it It was nice to see how GB helps others with charity events Christopher McShane also recommends the experience He said The children were great to work with and the whole day was very well organised I got a huge amount out of it personally It s the first time I ve ever been involved with anything like this and it was great to see the children learning and having fun at the same time I learned a lot too and would 100 recommend it to other colleagues who haven t been involved yet What a scorcher Paul Speakman has attended several events in the past and enjoyed this one just as much Fantastic day again but now fighting off sunstroke what a scorcher Co organiser Stu Farley summed everything up when he said It was a brilliant event and the weather was kind to us The staff got stuck in and involved with all the activities and it was obvious from the laughter and smiles on the faces of the kids how much they enjoyed it It was a fitting end to the programme we have been running jointly with the Wolves Foundation over several months to raise the awareness of disability with schoolchildren through sport his free tickets from Ben Toby and George Tour Said Craig We were lucky enough to receive an extensive guided tour of the Wolves training facilities including the newly opened Training Barn The tour gave the pupils a fantastic insight into how the players not only spend their day to day but what where they eat as well as the state of the art technology that is used to improve performance I think it was a real eye opener for the pupils who are only used to seeing the players perform on a match day and I think many were shocked at the level of preparation the club goes into to ensure the team is given the best possible chance on the pitch Phil Ben George and Toby were able to give first hand information about what they like and do not like doing at training No doubt Amanda Hunt is in no doubt about the benefit the project is having on the pupils She said I can see first hand the difference in confidence of the pupils and the willingness and determination to have a go and join in Before this they were spending more or less 24 7 in the base room at school I am hopeful that this is the start of a more inclusive approach to our designated provision The parents and pupils on a weekly basis talk about the activities and new experiences which the children are having the opportunity to be part of In any meeting with a parent or discussion with one of the pupils the thing they look forward to most each week is Mr T Craig Thomason and the team coming in The pupils are also developing their social communication skills which they find particularly difficult from building relationships with the coaches etc and meeting new people I can t thank you all enough for your support and the developing partnership Fantastic Craig commented The project with St Greg s continues going from strength to strength with the fantastic pupils at the school being aided by dedicated enthusiastic volunteers from Gladstone Brookes as well as involvement from the club and players A particular highlight of the training barn visit was presenting an extremely happy pupil with the Gladstone Brookes family season ticket for the weekend s game against Widnes a chance to see his first live Warrington game Involved Gladstone Brookes staff love getting involved in the project Stu Farley was one of the supporters on the training barn trip and said Our visit to the Wolves training centre saw the coaches and players answering all sorts of questions from rugby to food and the kids got the chance to see how the players train in between games and the superb facilities they have access to The kids reactions clearly showed how much they enjoyed the trip and meeting the players leaving them with fabulous memories I am sure they are still talking about A huge thanks should go to the
