just as much Fantastic day again but now fighting off sunstroke what a scorcher Co organiser Stu Farley summed everything up when he said It was a brilliant event and the weather was kind to us The staff got stuck in and involved with all the activities and it was obvious from the laughter and smiles on the faces of the kids how much they enjoyed it It was a fitting end to the programme we have been running jointly with the Wolves Foundation over several months to raise the awareness of disability with schoolchildren through sport Best day so far By Mike Birkett Published 24th June 2014 Posted in Charity Gladstone Brookes Wolves Foundation Tagged disabilities Disability Awareness Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation The GB Team left to right Jordan Campbell Aaron Chadburn Kathryn Bennett Amy Atherton and Jon Quirke The GB staff taking part were unanimous the Disability Awareness Day at Green Lane Community Special School was the best day so far in our year long project with the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation to raise awareness of a range of disabilities and the effect they have on people s daily lives Everyone agreed that though they were there to bring a series of sporting lessons to pupils with their own disabilities they ended up being taught as much if not more by the kids themselves with the enthusiasm they brought to every event Jason Elkaleh from the Wolves Foundation said The GB Staff did a great job This is the first time we have delivered the programme in a special school and it was great to see the way they adapted to the situation and got really involved with the children Inspiring Kathryn Bennett said Today has been the best day so far Being part of the assembly was possibly the most inspiring part of the day with the children receiving their merit awards for achieving something which seems so ordinary to you and I but is a huge achievement for a child with a disability It was all capped off by the look of joy and excitement on their faces when we had the seated volleyball tournament in the afternoon It was a picture I won t forget she added Amazed Aaron Chadburn found that working with children who had their own disabilities brought an added dimension to the whole programme I was amazed at how well they did he said It gave us all a special insight into what it means to cope with a disability and still enjoy life It was a great day Amy Atherton said It was a very rewarding day It was lovely to see children of all ages learning to work as part of a team and all having fun no matter what their disability It was a fantastic event to be part of and such a positive experience For Jordan Campbell it was his first experience of a disability awareness event but it won t be his last It was a great day from start to finish and something I definitely want to do again Click on thumbnail to see a bigger image Incredible Jon Quirke has been to a series of events but this was his first time with disabled children and he describes it as an incredible day Watching the kids receive their merit awards in morning assembly was a very touching experience even for a guy It makes you realise that we have a much easier life and that we need to appreciate what we have and think about the attitude we have to other people regardless of who they are Help I was working with one young girl trying to get her to pick up two balls at the same time It seems such a small thing but to see her achieve it because of the help I gave her was an amazing feeling It taught me that regardless of who you are and whether you have a disability or not we are all the same but some people just need more help than others at times Staff at the school who work with the children every day enjoyed the event as much as their pupils Delighted The staff joined the kids for the seated volleyball tournament PE Co ordinator Mike King commented All the kids and staff really enjoyed the event We have had great links with the Wolves Foundation for a number of years and were delighted to welcome the staff from Gladstone Brookes into school to see the great work that goes on in disability sport and get involved themselves A great day was had by all and everyone enjoyed the activities the seated volleyball was a particular highlight Many thanks to everyone involved for helping to give our children positive and enjoyable experiences of sport he added Disability Awareness at Meadowside By Mike Birkett Published 13th June 2014 Posted in Charity Gladstone Brookes Wolves Foundation Tagged Disability
